Hi. I have tried a variety of diets without much success, it's not the diet it's me! I recently tried SW and stayed the same weight for three months as I can't get portion control. Now fed up with paying out £5 a week and buying tons of food I have decided to try the 5:2 plan.

I know I can drop down to 500 cals as I have done the Cambridge Diet before and lost 3.5 stone in 12 weeks, but it's not sustainable and I like quite a lot of activity. I run 5k 4-5 times a week and cycle 4 times a week to work and back, so a constant diet of 500 cals is just not healthy with all that exercise.

To day is going to be my fast day and again on Friday. I am away camping the beginning of next week so it is likely to be Tuesday and Friday then as well. However, I hope to eventually fast on Mondays and Fridays.

If anyone had any advice it will much appreciated.

Whoops, forgot to add my proposed meal plan for today;

Breakfast is 35g porridge oats and evening meal is 200g king prawns, a large salad with low cal dressing, ski mousse. I will also have 200 ml milk for teas. This totals nearly 500 cals. I also walked three miles this morning instead of running, but I will be cycling today about 7 miles.

Lovely to have you on board. Portion control can be an issue on the Fast Diet. It certainly was for me at the start. On non fast days you are told to eat normally, which I thought I was doing, and then complaining why it wasn't working. I'd been told to track my calories on non fast days and very quickly realised that what I thought was normal was having huge portions of EVERYTHING. Once I tracked calories for a few days I was shocked to see how much I was actually eating. I'm now a lot more conscious of what I eat on non fast days and have lost around 7lbs in a few weeks (I don't have moch to lose to be honest) So I'd really suggest counting calories over a typical week to save on disappointment later.

There are threads on this board (as well as the calorie counting board) which advise you how to work out the number of calories you should be eating on non fast days depending on your current weight, height, age and fitness level

Hi manicdeb. Thanks for your advice. I have hot my fitness pal and over the last couple of weeks I have been eating 1500 cals a day and losing steadily, I thought I would do a couple of 500 cal days to make for when I eat out, which is usually twice a week. I plan to do Mon and Thurs 500 cals, Thurs and Sun 1500 cals and Tues, Fri and Sat 2000 cals.
 
Well I managed to get through my first fast day, the next one is Friday. I had

Lunch - 275g galia melon and large salad with low calorie dressing
Dinner - 150g king prawns with a large salad and low calorie dressing
Drinks - 2-3 litres water and 200 ml skimmed milk for teas
Total calories 490

I know some advice is to eat one meal on a fast day, or just breakfast and dinner, but I didn't think I would make it through the day to start with if I didn't break it down to smaller steps.

Well done! I'm going to fast again on Friday too.
 
Hi there,
Ive recently started the 5:2 diet, ive been doing sw since jan and lost 12lb.
So after my first two fast days (sat and tues) im very happy to say that ive lost 3lb!
On my non fast days im eating around 1600 cals and loving it!

Hi I've just picked all day and ended up eating just over 2000 cals. I am going to try and get a better grip on it tomorrow and stick to 1500 cals. Friday is my next fast day.
