Can only manage 1 day a week

I have been interested in the 5:2 diet since the Horizon programme last year.

Having tried it a few times I can only seem to manage 1 fast day a week, which may be doing me good medically but doesn't result in any weight loss.

Has anyone had the same problem and does anyone have any suggestions for help or a solution?

Thanks

Why 1? Are you trying 2 and struggling?

Yes I'm trying two but I struggle to make it through the second fast of the week (I use Mondays and Thursdays like in the book) with out eating more than 500kcal.

Is there something different that makes Thursdays difficult? I tend to plan my first days around which days are easier with less temptation. Are you eating 500 in one evening meal? Would you last better with a snack?

I think it's only that I've done it once already (on the Monday) and the Thursday therefore feels more of a struggle. No difference between my daily activities on the two days, although maybe am less stressed on the Monday coming off the weekend.

I tend to not get hungry until 3-4pm so I have about 250 then and have the other 250 at 7-8pm. I just don't have the same control on Thursdays and want to carry on eating during the evening. Bare in mind due to work I don't rise until 10am which is later than most and bedtime is about 2am.

I can identify with that! Start of the week always feels more business-like than later on towards Thursday and Friday!
The only thing I can think of is that maybe you get some 'close to zero' calorie things just for Thursday night?? Not sure what though! Maybe others have good ideas.
2am must feel like a long evening even though you do get to sleep til 10. Hope you figure something out. :)

That's a good idea, I'll stock up on plenty of celery and cucumber. I think I might do Thursdays with a lot more protein than normal as well as I find it makes me feel less hungry.

You could do an inbetween day on your second fast perhaps? So eat more than 500 but don't go over a fixed amount (800 maybe?) and then do this until you get used to them and then reduce gradually.

Ahhh that's a great idea, wouldn't have thought of that. I'll give it a try it on Thursday.

Well I still didn't manage it this week got to 10pm end of shift and hunger got the best of me. Doh! Will try it again next week.

Hayden maybe split day fasting would work better for you, so just 24 hours from 5pm until 5pm or 10pm until 10pm the next in your case? Maybe read the little free ebook Eat Stop Eat,Brad Pillon, might help you out

I have looked for Eat stop eat before but I can't find it for free anywhere.

Tried the split day fasting for a few weeks but didn't see any weight loss from it. I am considering dropping the 500kcal and not eating for the day. It's after I eat that I get hungry.

I did that for my first few fasts tbh. Once i started eating i just couldn't stop so i did a quite a few 36hr fasts and now i can eat on my DD's but if i don't want to i just don't. I'll have coffee and water instead. It does get easier honeslty :)

I couldn't find a free copy of Eat, Stop, Eat but the basic premise is just as Lanarkwitch said. You would stop eating at 5pm one day and then start eating again at 5pm the following day or between any times that are easier for you.

That's interesting, so you'd get a 24 hour complete fast.
Would you still calorie count (restrict to 500) the meal you break your fast with? I.E. you'd still have a day with no moe than 500 calories? Or does the 24 hour break mean you don't need to restrict at all outside those hours?
Does that make sense? :D

Like others I find if I break my fast at 18 hours with say a 200 calorie meal....I get pretty hungry in the hours where I'm waiting for the other 300 cals. Might try mixing it up next time...or maybe even tomorrow and see how it goes.

Okay i'm not an expert but i think you can add two 500 cal days at the end of your 24hr fasts if you want but in Eat, Fast, Eat he just says to eat normally.... I'm sure someone will check that for you though just to be sure. If you google Eat, Fast, Eat reviews i'm sure one of them will give you the gist.

There is no mention of 500 cals with eat stop eat its a clear 24 hours no cals then eat what you want, check out ladybirds diary its pretty much what she does

Ah that's maybe why I wasn't losing weight when I tried the 24 hour fast then because I was still eating 500kcal in the 24 hours. Would make sense. Off to look at ladybirds diary.

Yeah best to think of it as how can I get the best calorie deficit for the least fasting I do I used to do up little tables about it to see what combinations worked better then others, the trick is to set a calorie limit for your not fasting times, I dunno say 1200 max (unlilkely you would need that many though)

Just to say I persevered and I've built up to doing 2 fast days a week eating just 400-500kcal during the day and it's no problem. I have found for me the trick is at about 4pm eating a 9 bar and then have a piece or fruit and then at about 10pm I have a couple of slices of ham. I have lots of water (keep little bottles in the fridge) but drink a diet fizzy drink in the evening if I get a bit desperate (which I think is more psychological), and the drink is my 'treat'. Works like a charm.

Then 4 days a week I am eating about 1200kcal and on the odd 1 day I might be a bit more relaxed and go a little over. Trying to get lots of fresh food and variety. Dare I say it I'm actually enjoying it. Surprised how much better I feel, hope it continues.

It took a while for it to click though!
