Newbie to 5:2

I have had a rapid gain of 3 stone over the last 6 months and I've decided the 5:2 is going to be the way to beat the bulge after a recommendation from a good friend.

Is it best to completely fast on the 2 days? A friend told me 500 calories so here is my food for today...

Welcome to the boards. I stick to under 500kcals on fast days. I love this way of eating/life as unlike other diets, it allows for social events.

Do you eat your 500 in one meal so fasting between 2 meals or spread them through the fast day?
 
I have a breakfast, tea and snack. I've worked it this way and it works fab for me as I don't get a lunch break at work. I came in at 495 yesterday and this was my food. ( sorry for hijacking ) xxx

hijack all you want!! I need as much inspiration and motivation as I can get....

I had just one meal yesterday.. i may try and spread my calories on my next down day....

What do you guys eat on an up day? I was planning to just eat clean but I am going to have to learn to count my calories, I twend to make a lot of meals from scratch which means I often count the calories wrong :(

Any tips would be hugely appreciated, I need as much help as I can get xxx
 
I eat whatever I like but I try to stay between 1200 and 1600cals. So I can have a treat day on a sat. :) it's about finding what works for you. There's no right or wrong way. As long as you stick to 500 or less at least twice per week, you should see a difference. Xxx
 
Hi MissThomas. On fast days I like to leave as big a gap between my last proper meal and the first on a fast day. I try and eat earlier on the day before and live on coffee and water for as long as I can. I usually make it to lunchtime and have a cup a soup and then the rest of my calories in a weightwatchers meal at dinner time with my husband. If I cook I tend to pick so hubby does it all. :D

I've been 'doing' this 5:2 for 6 months on and off but have had a few health issues that have messed it about so I'm determined to grab it properly this year, we're off to Australia for August and I don't want to waddle around! I fasted yesterday and today is an eat day and I don't feel hungry yet!! I have quite a bit of danger from not eating enough on the feed days. Go figure. :(

I loved fasting first time around but had a bad experience taking anti inflammatories on a down day - I think this time I'll keep it flexible and spread my calories when I need to. 1 down 1 to go! I calorie count and aim for 12-1400 cals on an up day. Really I'm aiming at 3500 deficit by end of the week inc exercise calories
 
So much to think about!! So I had a cheeky weigh in after my first fast and then my first up day and I'm 4lbs down!! I'll officially weigh on Saturday but it's really helping me stick to it.

Previously when I have lost weight I ate clean and didn't have to worry about calories, it's quite shocking seeing the number of calories in things!

Come home from work today because I've been sick :( might change this day to a fast day considering I've had breakfast and doubt I'll eat now for the rest of the day?

Does anyone fast more than the recommended 2 days?

I do 4:3 ( I fast mon/wed and Friday) as I can be quite naughty at weekends so it keeps me in check better xxx

Has your weight loss been quicker by doing 3 days? I've brought my fast day a day forward and I might do another over the weekend if I can x

I've not so much noticed it's quicker but more keeps me in check as my Saturdays can and have been really naughty at times haha. My mum in law only does 2 days fasting, has 4 days at around 1600cals and doesn't count at all on Saturdays. She lost 1st 6lbs from end of sept till mid dec. xxx
