Help on veggies and other things please!

I'm on day two of Induction and so far so good!

Can anyone help with some questions I have please? Can't find the answers in either the book or the phone app!

Firstly, can you have beetroot in the induction or OWL phase? I can only find beetroot greens mentioned.

Next, the book says no milk, but you can have single cream. Here in Jersey, the cows are known for their very high fat creamy milk. Would I be able to substitute the cream with say 100ml of full fat milk (for coffee/ omelettes etc) a day?

    New start, new year!

Hi Tara and well done on a great start

No beetroot on induction, sorry, it's pretty carby - I think the rule is, the greener the veg, the lower in carbs.

And lucky you on creamy milk - i guess it's OK, but the others will know. Just count it into your carb allowance

The figures I can find for jersey milk range between about 6 and 7g carbs for 100ml which is too high for induction really. If its a particular brand you can look it up yourself. Milk sugars - lactase - is what you have to watch out for.

Alpro unsweetened soya milk light only has 0.1g carbs per 100ml so you can see it makes a big difference. Double cream has about 2.5g in 100ml and you'd be unlikely to use that much as you use less than you do milk to get the same effect. I think atkins limits cream to 2 tbsp per day on induction. You can also water it down. My vote is still with the alpro though, that's what I use.

I always say though, if you want to give something a try then go for it, but if you find yourself hungry or your weight loss stalling at any point then you'll know what the first thing to cut out should be. Do make sure you count it into your 20g carbs though.

Root vegetables are almost always an Atkins no-no. The big exception is celeriac, which makes great chips.

    Thank you for your replies.

Okay, will move on to the soya milk tomorrow. Checked the carton and it shows the full fat milk is 4.5g per 100ml, but see your point with the amount of that compared to the soya milk.

Can I also ask about no added sugar fruit squash? Our water is bore hole and not a good taste. I normally use the minimum amount of Robinsons concentrated no added sugar orange squash to mask the taste (plus I'm not that keen on plain water at the best of times!). Is there anything that I can use that's similar & Atkins friendly?

Coke zero is okay. A lot of people here do use the sugar free squash, well diluted. Again, if you have probs, it's something you can cut out if need be.

I drink Robinsons no added sugar orange squash. I can't stand water. I drink squash and a few cups of coffee a day, i use cream in my coffee, or unsweetened almond milk, if you can find it in the supermarket it is really yummy in coffee and super low carb. It has to be the unsweetened one though.

Nestle or Lipton Unsweetened tea is awesome and has zero carbs. It takes time to get used to not sweetening your tea but when you do you will find that it quenches your thirst way better than soda or drink mixes. Plus it doesn't contain any nasty chemicals. Also you should try to eliminate caffeine from your diet. Caffeine works as a diuretic which you don't want to use on Atkins because the diet itself is a diuretic. Drink mainly unsweeted decaf tea or bottled water.

Also with the creamer. You want to choose lower fat foods in general because your body processes fat in a similar way as the carbs. Choose a "low fat" (not "no fat") option whenever you can. Be sure to read the label though. Sometimes the reduced fat or no fat version has more sugar in it to make up for the taste.

    Thanks all!

Have moved onto OWL, as worked out that I was eating more carbs than I should have on Induction, plus have 6 Brasilia nuts in the afternoon as my snack ( looking for the crunch in place of a packet of crisps).

I am missing having more varied veg though! My old staple veg were peas, carrots and sweetcorn. Still, flowering sprouts have been an adventure!

Have you tried celeriac? Celeriac, cauliflower, spring onion and courgettes are my essentials.
