Meet My Companions

First of all let me summarize my weight situation, when I first went to the hospital they weighed me at 178kg (392lb or 28st), I didn’t diet in any way between that September day until I started the liver reducing diet on the 3rd of January, although my family did keep their eye on me.
On the 3rd of January I was the same weight as above but on the 17th of January, the day I went in for my operation I was 166.5kg (366lb or 26st).
When I left the hospital, four days later, I was 167.5 kg (368lb or 26.3st) and this last Sunday morning, the 25th of January I was 162.7kg (358lb or 25.6st).
So I’ve lost 15.3kg (33.6lb or 2.4st) in three weeks.
There are three people sitting at this computer, my self of course and two others that live within me, each of which I have imaginatively named ‘Thin John’ and ‘Fat John’.
Now ‘Thin John’ is an early starter and talks to me early in a morning, telling me how naughty I was the day before and that I must make amends today, why not have a small bowl of cereal for breakfast or a boiled egg, I must eat my packed lunch at dinner time and not add chocolate or chips to it and I must be strong when ‘Fat John’ wakes up.
‘Fat John’ on the other hand is a late starter, around about two o’clock in the afternoon, he is a much stronger character and accompanies me home from work, pointing out the chips shops, McDonalds, KFC’s and such like and reminding me of how much better I would feel if I were to stop and buy something from one of them.
To ‘Thin John’ Easter is a time to enjoy the break from work and share some time with your family, go for walks, do some house repairs but to ‘Fat John’ Easter is a chocolate eating time, eat as much as possible and have the lovely shaped chocolate the companies produce at this time of year.
‘Thin John’ says annual holidays are to have a good enjoyable break from work, rent a cottage in a scenic spot and find nice long walks or go to beautiful beaches and play or visit historic places, but to ‘Fat John’ that’s a load of nonsense, go on the internet and find a ‘food town’, is there a chip shop close to the cottage, where’s the nearest supermarket, can we go and visit a chocolatier then you book the cottage.
Christmas is a time for cheer and playing games and giving presents after a nice dinner, so says ‘Thin John’ but to ‘Fat John’ it’s for eating yourself silly on anything that’s edible, if you can leave the dinner table after your meal, then you haven’t eaten enough, so get back and have another plateful.
When I go into a motorway services, as I often do ‘Thin John’ will say “if you must go in the shop then have a look at the magazines, ‘Classic Cars’ or BBC History’ there must be something you would enjoy“, but ‘Fat John’ pushes him aside and tells me to look at the three king size chocolate bars, ‘three for £1.60p’ WOW what a bargain, you can’t read a magazine while driving but you can eat a chunky kit Kat.
Now after my operation these two are still with me, ‘Thin john’ holds all the cards at the moment, whilst ‘Fat John’ is stunned and trying to think of a way round the problem, I went to the fridge to get some milk and he directed my attention to 500g of boiled ham that was on the shelf and in a flash suggested I might want to gobble some of it up. ‘Thin John’ intervened and told me how dangerous that would be, so I didn’t entertain it at all.
When I’m resting ‘Fat John’ will come and remind me about the butcher in the village, whose wife makes pork pies in the back room and how delicious they are or the chip shop in the next village who batters his chips to make them extra tasty or the wonderful kebabs in the kebab houses in Wolverhampton.
‘Thin John’ counter attacks with “you have to eat with nutrition in mind from know on” or “small amounts will be all you can cope with or you’ll be ill” and “start a hobby or take on some interest and push food to the back of your life forever as the old days are gone forever”.
Losing weight is fabulous, there‘s no doubt about that and I know ‘Thin John’ is right but I find disobeying ‘Fat John’ is somehow depressing and I also know that he’s very cunning and a very crafty fox.

Its like you have lived a day in my shoes! how funny is it that even though for all of us our battle with food is personal, somehow we all share the same deamons!
Thank you for sharing this with us, and I hope for you like many of us that the thin person which is inside of all of us wins this messy and often undignified battle

Hiya John, don't know if you still read here or not, just having a look through your blogs....like most dieters I've read every diet book going, I love the human aspect behind the weight loss...have you thought of writing these blogs out and posting them to an editor. They are brilliantly worded and as a reader I find them very engrossing, I'd love to read more. I hope you are doing well xxxPosted 5th November, 2011 at 03:08 PM by MrsLmc
