Help! Exercise Advice Needed!

Hi everyone,

I have been calorie counting since New Years Day and have lost about 17lbs (still a long way to go to target!). One of the things I was doing was making sure I was walking lots and the last couple of weeks I had reached my 10,000 steps every day.

However, last week we went to the Yorkshire Dales and went on a long 6 hour walk which has now done my left ankle and shin in and it hurts even to put pressure on it. I thought resting it would help but it is no better so am planning on getting it checked out.

This means my walking has come to a halt and therefore my calorie deficits have been on average 800 this week (I used to have at least 1,000 on a dailt basis when I was walking).

I was hoping for a bit of advice in regards to exercises I can do that don't put any pressure on my ankle so I can still keep my body burning those extra calories?

Thanks in advance xx

Can you swim? Swimming is great exercise and very low impact so it's perfect if you're struggling to put any pressure on your ankle. That's all I can think of really but hopefully someone else will have more suggestions.

Well done on your loss so far by the way :)

Defo swimming. I did aqua aerobics last week for ye first time that really got my heart rate going but without putting any impact on my joints x

How about trying some weights work? There are lots of muscles groups that can be exercised without going near the lower legs and extra muscle will help to burn more calories.
Any exercise you can do seated on lying down - arms, back and abs will get a good workout.
Get the injury checked out, if resting hasn't helped you need it looked at.

Thanks everyone, I love swimming but have ended up with sore elbows and knees when I have gone regularly in the past so was wondering if it would affect my ankle. However I have noticed that my ankle hurts most when I wear ballet pumps and there is very little to absorb the impact of my foot hitting the ground so hopefully swimming won't have a negative effect due to the lack of pressure.

I can get some mini weights in and also there is an outdoor gym in my local park which has machines that use your own body weight for resistance - will they be any good? Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the help :) xx

Any type of resistance work would be good to do and ultimately will lead to better weightloss gains than walking does, the park you mentioned sounds ideal and as the weather hopefully improves now you should be able to get there more often. I'd keep it up when your leg gets better too.
