Valentine's day meal

Hiya :)

I was wondering if anyone could help me, I have been on SS for 8 weeks (well 7 actually as I took xmas week off) and my partner has asked if I can have valentines night off as he wants to cook me a nice dinner, we always have a romantic meal on that evening.... Well I decided to make that week my add a meal week anyway as it will be my 11th week.... Now here is my question - He does a lovely starter of mussels in a tomatoe and pancetta bacon sauce, I would like to try as much as I can to not kick myself out of ketosis as I know how difficult it is to get back there and I am worried about the tomatoes as I know they have a high carb content, how long do you think it will take me to get back into ketosis?? We are having steak for the main meal which I will have with the allowed veg so the only thing that I will be having with carbs are the tomates.... I hope that given it won't be a huge amount that it won't take me too long to get back into ketosis, does anyone have any idea how bad tomatoes are?

Thanks in advance

Bev

Hi

Tomatoes are a double whammy because they contain both carbs and citric acid (if you use tinned ones that is, which most sauce recipes do) both of which can knock you out of ketosis. I suppose it depends on how carb sensitive you are as to how long it'll take you to get back but it's unlikely to take as long as when you very first start out on CD.

Do you really need to have the starter? Just concerned because you mentioned that you knew how difficult it was to get back there (presumably after your Christmas break?) Personally I wouldn't risk facing days of hunger and struggling just for one little starter, after all it'll still be there when you're at goal. xx

Thanks for answering, we have decided to do garlic prawns as a starter instead so as not to kick me out of ketosis, having already lost so much weight I really don't want to spoil it now so thanks for clarifying that for me Serena :)

Lol, i was gonna suggest prawns! Went out for a meal at the weekend with family and ended up having 4 oz steak with brussel sprouts. Didn't really fancy eating but i did it because it was good to go out for a meal together. There was prawn cocktail on the starters list and i thought of asking for the prawns with no sauce, lemon or tomato but just the lettuce but opted for the steak in the end. No doubt i have made a boo boo, dont even know if sprouts allowed lol!
Can we have lettuce? x

Hiya Sleepybird, I found this out about brussel sprouts...

Food Item:Brussels sprouts, boiled
Food Quantity: 1 cup
Carbs: 11.1g
Dietary Fiber: 4g
Net Carbs: 7.1g

i was told no sprouts on CD as they have a lot of carbs - i was gutted at Christmas!

Thanks a lot for doing that! Call me thick but is the above a good or bad thing?
Still in ketosis according to my wee wee stix and not hungry or anything?

Everyone's carb tolerance is different so maybe the few brussels you had didn't make a difference at all, some people only have to have a cambridge bar to kick them out and others could eat 3 bars and still stay in ketosis.

I'm a bit confused about "hidden" carbs. Obviously pasta, bread, pots, cereal etc. but what foods are filled with "hidden" carbs ? I had no idea about tomatoes, thought they were just water (not literanlly obviously but you know what I mean) !!!!

yeah all fruit n veg have carbs in them, but some a really low like broccoli n cauli and some are higher like carrots, toms and onions, that's why CD recommend sticking with green veg when on SS+ as most are low. Didn't know about sprouts myself I thought the were low too! oops!

xx

i think that veg is better then fruit as fruit has a lot more carbs and natrual sugars. Hwoever over all with three CD a day you ahve it has over all 42g of carbs

just reading the thread and would be interested to know if turnips are allowed when introducing the veg after 12 weeks ;) xx
