Hi All
I am a family planning nurse and just wanted to clarify your queries with regard to contraception, even though it was a while ago.
Its true to say that Depo provera can affect your appetite. Its the sheer amount of hormone (3 months worth) being shoved into your body all in one go that can definately make you much hungrier. To be honest I personally wouldnt recommend it to anyone who is struggling with their weight as in my experience it doesnt help.
With regard to the 3 year implant (implanon). This is a great method of contraception and doesnt tend to increase appetite as it leaks a small amount of hormone into the system on a daily basis so shouldnt effect the appetite as much.
Hope this helps!!!!!!!
Deb

Only reason I switched, I was informed that Implanon contains less of everything (hormones) which can only be a plus-point in my book. It lasts longer than Depo, and as mentioned by someone before, at least you're not getting a surge of hormones every 3 months - it's a gradual release. I was totally aware of all possible side-effects, and was also given the printout which is attached to each dosage every 3months by the nurse (whether I wanted it or not!). This clearly lists all the side-effects too, even if your GP doesn't explain. All this garble is also contained on each Pill pack, or info leaflets on any contraception - or better still - ask! If anyone is planning on changing their method of contraception, you should always do your own research online, ask practice nurses/GP, take info leaflets, etc.
The hp's are often busy, time limited, and probably cover the essentials, assumming you're going to read-up the other bits. Not ideal, but they don't generally go into detail about side effects on many other medications or treatments either!
Anyways, enough already! I'd thoroughly recommend Implanon to anyone!
