Why do YOU want to lose weight?

Hi all,

Seems an obvious question doesn't it? We all have our own reasons for wanting to shed the pounds and a lot of them will be very similar but I thought I'd start this thread because I've noticed a lot of people have been struggling to stick to plan and this may (or may not?) work as a motivator!

At the end of the day, the only thing that is going to stop me from cheating is having no money and no food in the house! So I really feel a lot of sympathy for those with children and husbands that they are continuing to cook for.....I don't think I would be able to do it! The bloody cat's food is starting to smell lush to me and I'm fairly sure that indicates a real problem!!

So this is my way to remind me of why I am doing this -some of you may not agree with my reasons but thats ok. We are all individuals and it really isn't a competition!!!

1) To look good.
2) To be healthier and not struggle to walk up the stairs.
3) To be able to dress better and look older.
4) To be more confident in my career.
5) To make my fiance proud.
6) To pluck up the courage to try wedding dresses on.
7) To be healthier when it comes to starting a family.
8) To fit into my beautiful size 10 clothes!
9) To look amazing for my 30th.
10) To live my 30s completely differently to my 20s.

Great post Nikie!
Soooo many reasons and agree with all of yours (except 9 and 10 as I'm 37!).
But in a nutshell... Because I'm utterly sick of being obeast, not being able to wear nice clothes and feeling like a right heifer!
Good luck on your journey x

I can relate to all your goals. My umber one though: husband and I want to start a family, but I won't until I'm in the healthy BMI range and toned up. I have never been so determined in my life :D

Oh, and obviously once we have the baby, I want to be able to run, have fun, etc without being out of breath...

And of course I want to look good too! In clothes and without :D Trying on Size 16 clothes (I started at a size 24...) and seeing they fit is the best diet boost ever :D

Great thread! And I agree with all your goals too! In particular number 3 stood out for me - I'm 31 (32 at Christmas!) but I get treated like a child at work and I think that's because I've got zero confidence in myself in the way I look and feel which is impacting on my confidence in my work. I have some gorgeous size 10 'office' type dresses that I can't wait to wear and I am imagining a whole different outlook when I can strut around the office in them and be who I really want to be...does that make sense? I have a colleague who 'power dresses', she's 5 years younger than me and is so much further ahead in her career then me and I feel really intimidated by her (she's really lovely though - its just me being me!) I'm starting college in January so need confidence for that too.

I have a list of 22 goals, some related specifically to the diet, like last a week/a month etc, some to my weight, like lose a stone/2/3 etc, some to how my body feels, like not filling out the seat on the plane, fitting into my small jeans, to thighs rubbing together, and some to my confidence, like feeling sexy. Finally, there are some behavioural ones, like going to the gym 3-4 times a week for a month to how I want to be eating.

Once they've been achieved I move them to a ticked off section. There's 7 left to tick...

I know I'm very anal but it helps me to return to review it from time to time and I get excited when I can move something to the ticked off section :)

Blondcarrot I completely agree with you! I love ticking things off!

Pudding you have totally summed up point 3! That's exactly what I meant! Some people may read it and think 'Why does she want to look older?!' but the truth is I do look young for my age, which isn't necessarily a problem but it IS annoying when I don't get taken seriously. Sometimes (for example) in shops I think shop assistants think I'm much younger than I am and I really do feel that they treat me differently as a result.

Ok, so losing weight won't make me look older! But I'm talking about the kind of confidence that comes from within.....I have none at the moment and if I can control what goes in my mouth enough to completely change my body, then that'll give me the confidence to perhaps try out for job roles that I never thought possible! I don't want to be disregarded anymore....I want to be noticed! I am still on the bottom rung of the career ladder, 6 years after graduating. I have seen people graduate after me and become qualified already. I need to make changes. One of my OH customers asked me about a year ago (when I was moaning about my job!) if there were any evening classes I could take to improve my qualifications and get a better job. I was almost ashamed to admit to him that I not only have a degree, but I have a post graduate diploma in law. I have the qualifications to move up the ladder -I just don't have the confidence in myself to do it.

I can relate to this completely. A colleague of mine is 4 years younger than me, is not even qualified yet and she was exuding so much more confidence than me!! No one would mess with her I tell you, and she was ADORABLE to boot :) I dream of being able to wear heels, etc. I have always felt that heels are to women what a tie is for men: it gives us "power", if you see what I mean. Not that you can't have power if you wear ballet pumps, but my attitude changes when I wear heels (they don't have to be high either!).

Nikie, I had that too, the "why don't you go on a course" thing. Er... I'm doing a PhD, it's as high as I can get in my field  And people are always surprised, as though being fat meant I only had half a brain

Yes book worm! In my experience people do seem to assume I am stupid! My role here is legal but I have been doing more and more PA type stuff over the last few months and I know I can do better than that! Clients sometimes ask if I ever want to get into law properly and I have to explain that I am trying!!!! My boss asked if I really wanted to be a lawyer, or whether I'd be interested in being a practice manager. Nothing wrong with being a practice manager but I am determined to become a lawyer and I actually think I'd be bloody good at it!

Yes, yes and yes to you all! I live in flats when I'm uncomfortable in my body and try to shrink or hide away - I totally agree heels = power :) I have the most beautiful heels at home (big shoe fan) but I wont wear them as I think they'll draw attention to me or I'm trying to be something I'm not.

I too look young for my age which yes is great sometimes but others not so - people guess me in my early 20's and when I tell them I'm actually early 30's you get the wow you're lucky but then there's an underlying 'but why is she still just an assistant'...

Hey ho, onward and downwards to confidence! An hour and a hlaf until I meet my CDC for the first time then I can START!

I love this thread....thank you for starting it! :) x

I have loads of similar reasons for doing this but the top 3 reasons for me are....

1) For my children, they deserve a mummy that they can be proud of and one that will live a long happy fun filled life with them.

2) Because I don't want to die early from a heart attack like my dad did last year, it broke my heart and I don't want my children to lose me too soon to something that could be prevented.

3) I turned 30 in April and like you mentioned in your list, I don't want to waste my 30's being fat and miserable like I was in my 20's.

Hello my lovely ladies and gents I have a hundred reasons why I need to lose the weight but main one being its had an impact on my 6 year old who is always asking me if she's fat and how she wants to be just like mommy wear black and go to fat club this breaks my heart has she's watched me diet all her life ! My newest baby is 8 months old another beautiful girl and I really don't want her to ever think I had weight issues I need to deal with this now so my beautiful babies don't remember a fat unfit mommy my son on the other hand who's 11 said he just looks me cause I'm cuddly lol so there is my reason and focus good luck all and I think I'm going to go on month weight loss rather then weeks x

I would love to be able to go clothes shopping without stressing out.

I have PCOS so losing weight will help my chances of starting a family with my husband

To fit into tiny jeans

These are just a few...

I also have PCOS and partner has poor sperm quality so we both need to do this to make babies!!!! Also get married in 6 months and have ordered my dress today...2 sizes smaller!!!!!! xxxx

Weddingbelle - ooh how exciting! I've been engaged for 3 years and haven't even tried on ANY dresses yet because I'm refusing to do so until I'm 11 stone!

Staceyc - I hear ya re clothes shopping! I just don't enjoy it at all at the moment. I just get so frustrated with it! My first goal is to fit nicely into my size 14 gap jeans - I have two pairs and 1 of them I have NEVER worn! When I do fit into them hopefully I'll only wear them for a month or so before they become too big! When I have lost weight before I have always given my bigger clothes to charity - then I end up gaining weight back and having to buy bigger clothes again! Very frustrating (and not frugal at all!!) So this time everytime something gets too big for me I am going to pack it away and then I'll give to charity after a year of maintaining. I really don't want to gain it back and have no intention of doing so but hey, it might be fun to try on the bigger clothes when I'm a size 10 and compare the difference!

I find clothes shopping immensly frustrating at the moment too, despite my weight loss. My current jeans are too big but one size smaller is still too small :( All of this because of my big behind :( I am having a fat day today...

Nikie, I work differently: if I know I have clothes in bigger sizes, then I tend not to worry until it's too late. So this time around, everything that is too big goes to the charity shop. Because I won't have the money to buy bigger clothes then I guess I'll just have to maintain my weight :D

That's a great point book-worm! Maybe by the time I am smaller I will have more confidence in myself to just get rid of them....instead of holding on to them! It probably isn't great for me to subconciously have the attitude that I may have to fit back into them one day?

Hmm....something for me to think about when it happens!

Oh yes it's really exciting! Only thing is i'm a size 18 for chest and waist and a size 24 on hips according to the measurements they took for the dress! Big behinds are big pains!! xxxx

Thought I'd resurrect this thread that I started a couple of years ago!

I don't think it was on my original list but;

- Lose weight so I don't have to spend another summer with chaffing thighs and red soreness under my massive boobies!

It is so refreshing to know I'm not the only one spending summers like this! Especially the thigh chaffing! It's awful! Here's to the next twenty summers being spent in little bikinis without a care in the world! :)

The chaffing is stupidly annoying. I even took to using the lube sticks that marathon runners use just to be a bit more comfortable. But not this year!
