Diet coke. Tell me the truth!
I am so confused. I've got such conflicting advice about the dreaded diet coke. Some say it's a definite no, others say they have it with no effect. I've done some research on the net regarding effects of citric acid on ketosis and it's all quite vague. A lot of the word "might" being thrashed about.
As I like to have an active social life and up to a point I would like some of that to continue I would like to know if (as it's the only diet soft drink available in pubs) I can go out and safely have a couple without it having too much of a detrimental effect?
Does anyone drink diet coke and their still in ketosis?

Did you ever find out Anne? I'm also wondering the same. It's a bit cheeky and depressing going to the pub and ordering a water!!!
Not really, just lots of maybe!
The general consensus is that it's the citric acid that we are avoiding. If you consume it, it MAY kick you out of ketosis. (It may not!)
Also been told that it MAY make you feel hungry. Again, I think this is an individual thing.
I did test it and have just one glass this week when I met a friend, it did nothing to me at all, was still in ketosis and no hunger pangs but haven't tried staying on it all night so maybe just a glass here and there doesn't hurt?
It's the pub thing that's hardest for me, I like to go out, and I don't mind not drinking but there's nothing else you can ask for. I've had coffee, sparkling water, soda water and 1 diet coke up till now. If you can find an alternative, please let me know!! X
I was told by someone that if you really do want a drink, go for a flavoured vodka with soda water. I'm not advising you to go on a splurge but I'm assuming that option is the lesser of two evils!! X
I've been ketotic on several diets in the past....Atkins/Cambridge. I've always drank diet coke and never came out of it....and I was drinking at least one can a day. I drink coke zero now, but only because it tastes sweeter and curbs my sugar pangs.... Obv when you're out an about its not always available so id still drink diet coke, as I say....I've always been fine with it :-)

Yeah I probably drink a pint of diet coke a day during the week and it has no effect on me and ketosis, and I check the ketostix regularly!
I've tried it and it didn't effect me so happy days!
Does anyone know if we can drink soda water? I asked my CDC, but she was unsure and advised against it. It's only carbonated water at end of the day, and it it has zero carbs and zero calories. Just wondering if anyone knew? Got a few nights out over the bank holiday and thought that if I have soda water I can pretend its got vodka in to save the tonnes of questions about why I'm not drinking! X
Well I know sparkling water is fine on the plan, so I don't see why not. I think your cdc is probably concerned as carbonated drinks can bloat you a bit. I limit carbonated drinks for that reason, but soda water certainly shouldn't do you any harm weight loss wise.
Thanks :-). My mates would just be all "why you being silly on a fad diet blah blah blah".... Just easier this way x

Soda water is carbonated with sodium carbonate so basically it's slightly salty. It is calorie and carb free but too much might have you retain water a bit due to the increase in salt. Fizzy water that just carbon dioxide dissolved in the water is totally fine. I have soda water when I go to the pub or a diet coke. If I have alcohol at all it's the hard stuff like vodka or gin because alcohol is digested using a different metabolic cycle than carbs, though your body will use the alcohol as fuel first it then reverts back to burning fat so we stay in ketosis (yay). Wine, beer and cider (the carb filled drinks) will likely kick you out of ketosis.

Yeah soda water is a funny one taste wise. I get a disgusting salty taste in my mouth during ketosis and soda water makes it worse but sparkling doesn't seem to!Diet coke seems to be ok for me though.
Ultimately, you won't know until you try, and if any of it does make you bloat or anything, just know for the future
