Obsessive Weighing

How do you stop yourself from obsessively checking the scales? Sometimes i find myself checking 2 or 3 times a day, although it is usually more like 1. it's really not healthy, especially when I see a slight gain or I stay the same because it makes me want to give it all up or go on a binge. Any tips?

The readings on the scales during the day will fluctuate up and down normally as you eat and drink and go about your day and has nothing whatsoever to do with gaining or losing weight as many things come into play, consuming a lot of tea/coffee/water, not drinking enough water, water retention too much salt, under eating, hormones etc...so you are really wasting your time to be honest.

The best time to weigh is first thing in the morning naked and after you have gone to the toilet...most people do a weekly weight in which gives the most accurate reading.

Having said that I like to weigh first thing every morning as it helps to keep me on track.

I was guilty of this last week and it really affected my mood. I was weighing myself every single morning and sometimes in the evening too. On the morning of Weigh Day it showed a loss of only a lb and as I weigh in the evening I was so sure by that time it would have turned into a gain. I spent the whole day in a foul mood because of that - when in reality I went to group and lost 1.5lbs.

I've now hidden my scales and will only allow myself one 'midweek' weight on a Friday evening to see how I'm doing. Other than that I will just go to group each week and hope to see a loss on the scales.

I was guilty of this too for the first 3 weeks it gets obsessive doesn't it. Now I only weigh myself once because it was fluctuating so much x

I can see how it is addictive but I like to get weighed every morning. I do it at roughly the same time, naked, after a wee and before I eat. I find if I've lost a pound it makes me want to lose more. If I sts or gain it makes me more determined to stick to the diet. But a few times a day probably won't help as your weight will fluctuate depending on when you've eaten etc.

You should just take your scale and put it in your closet. Take it out once a week, preferably in the morning. Funny thing that other people will notice that you are losing weight before you will really can tell.

This is something that I have a real problem with. If the scales show even a slight upward trend I get really down. It has thrown me off diets in the past so this time I am going to keep the scales locked away for the whole week.

I'm guilty of that too ... I tried hiding my scale but I just go and get it from wherever I put it ... a friend told me try to keep yourself busy so you'll forget about it so now I'm trying to stop weighing myself 2-3 times a day and start weighing myself once a week and I hope I can do it because it brings me down when I don't see the change

this used to be a big problem for me - i used to weigh each day and get really annoyed if i couldnt see a loss - the best thing i ever did was ditch the scales and go and weigh at the local chemist once a week instead - it meant i could see bigger weight losses and i didnt have to see the silly little fluctuations in between caused by hormones or water retention etc - now i am not weighing at all! - i just have a pair of skinny jeans that i used to wear at my lowest weight, and i try them on every so often - i am getting closer!!!

I used to weigh myself 4 times a day everyday. I've now put my scales in the spare room so that I'm not seeing them everyday and thinking that I need to weigh myself when I'm looking at them. It has worked so far and I've been able to stick to weighing myself once a week.

Just my opinion, but I don't think weighing every day makes any sense at all. The shifts are so subtle... It just don't work that way. I would weigh once a week, after a shower.

On all of my previous (unsuccessful) diets, I used to weigh myself every day and sometimes 5 times one after another ???? It was one of the aspects of my diet that led to it's demise because if i didn't see exactly the figure I wanted to see on the scale to the very pound, I would get the "I'm giving up" feeling. On my current diet I only allow a weigh in every 4 weeks. That way I get an appreciable weight loss and it is far more satisfying and encouraging. I never weigh myself when I feel bloated just in case I have retained water and will get a false reading.

No scales in mine and my fiance's home, that way it keeps us focused

Why after a shower?

I am the Queen of Obsessive Weighing!

Used to keep the scale in my bedroom. I have a weak bladder and wake 3 or 4 times during the night. I used to weigh just before I got into bed, every time I got up for a pee, and then when I got up in the morning. Then, during the day, each time I went up to the loo I'd pop into my bedroom and weigh. So, I used to weigh myself about 8 or 9 times a day.

In the end I left the scale on the ground floor front windowsill and waited until someone stole them.

Five years later I bought a new scale. I now weigh only once a day, and am trying to get that down to once every other day with a view to once a week.
