They've never suggested an insulin pump! I'm happy injecting, as i'm used to it now. It's just not very nice when the insulin doesn't work because of chest infections!
They've said if i keep getting DKA then i will have to eventually have renal therepy.
Since my new diet though, i've been having a lot of hypos!
Hate hypos, feel like people are staring at me shaking if it happens when i'm out!
Usually happen in the middle of the night though, even if i take less insulin!
What is an insulin pump like? How often do you have to change the insulin? (if that how it works...have no idea!)
Insulin pump is on you 24/7 .. Insulin runs continuously .... You fill your pump with insulin every 3 days then change the cannula every 2/3 days ... No injections atall! Its great .. All I do is input the carbohydrate ive eaten then the pump calculates how much insulin you need. I rarely hypo with the pump, on injections I ALWAYS hypoed, especially at night .. Im like you .. I HATE hypos ........ Even after 18years! .... Id recommend the insulin pump. Especially if your diabetes is ruining your kidneys .. Mine are on the brink but the pump therapy will keep em a bit longer xxxxxxxOriginally Posted by Penguin_Hell
That sounds so much better! I've found it so hard to diet with diabetes. Only because of hypos. The nurses always recommened fast acting sugar, which is a no no on slimming world. So I have to sit there with a banana or alpen light, waiting for it to kick in!
Oh bless ya ... And they don't react very fast do they ... Ive always struggled to loose weight too, hypos at night make me wake up in sweat and palpitations so I want a quick fix to get rid. Some days I wanna eat the fridge haha. If you want help or advice on anything im always here, I think were in a similar age group too, so its good to have someone who understands coz most my mates don't xxxxxxxOriginally Posted by Penguin_Hell
Thank youIt's nice find someone else with the same problems!
Yeah, i often wake up with my heart racing, i sit in my kitchen trying to eat a fat free yogurt (i find the fat free activia snackpots are good. about 16g of sugar...usually miss my mouth from shaking though lol).
I've just told my mum about the insulin pump..i think we're all fed up of hospital visits, so we will try anything right now!xx
Wow, youve got some patience to sit with a yogurt ... Im usually sticking my hands in the cereal packet. Glad I could help, if you wanna keep in touch .. Just pm me and ile send you my email : ) xxxxxxxOriginally Posted by Penguin_Hell
Hi all,
Not sure if this thread is still active?
I got gestational diabetes with my last child. He was 11lb 2oz at birth, fear not I had a cesarean. Lol
I had checks during pregnancy then after birth. Diabetes disappeared fully, I was on yearly checks 'just in case'. Couple of years after birth had my check, then received a letter just before Xmas from the doctors, telling me via letter that I was type 2 diabetic and could I make an appointment. Talk about breaking the news gently lol
I was on metformin, but now on diet only, and hoping it stays that way. I've lost 3 stones, have slipped a bit but trying to get back into losing weight frame of mind.
Have enjoyed reading everyone's stories & experiences.
I'd been sick for quite a long time, years in fact. I had been tested for this, that and the other but nothing made any sense. I moved house, and so moved practice, within a few weeks I was diagnosed, and put on Metformin. I researched a lot, cut right down on my carbs, and am now trying the Newcastle diet using S&S and my BG's are now always in the 4's or very low 5's. It's a horrible condition to have, but I manage mine well now, and am blessed to have no complications.
Keep well all.
I found out by accident, kinda. About 5 years ago I had a horrible rash on my leg that wouldn't heal, finally the dermatologist sent me for blood test and that's how I found out. I then read lots and saw it was one of the symptoms.
I was managing with diet alone and 2 years ago the gp said he didn't want to see me any more.
But last Dec I badly injured my ankle and they took a random blood sugar test in the ambulance. My fasting blood sugar was 9.
I got myself back to gp when I could walk and admitted I'd pretty much stopped dieting.( I'd put on 3 more stone) She threatened to put me on medication but I asked for a few months.
Went back for check up couple of weeks ago and she's happy with me, gonna let me stay with just diet control. I low carb which works perfectly at keeping my blood sugar down. No going back now!
Sent from my HTC using MiniMins so excuse random words that have been autocorrected!

When I was 14, I was in school and thought I had the flu... I was getting drinks of water every half hour.. I just felt super run down and thirsty all the time. It went on for about 3 weeks. I was at home one day, too sick to go into school... I was lying on the couch in my pjs and told mam that I had this really bad pain in the side of my torso. She came into the room and I couldn't see her properly. My vision had gone all blurry... I asked her to bring me to the hospital so my dad came in and called an ambulance. I passed out in the ambulance and woke up in the ER at the hospital. Then I passed out again and went into a coma for about a day. When I woke up they told me I had diabetes.
I learned afterwards that my sugars had been 50.9mmol/L....
Wow! What a varied bunch!
I was diagnosed when I was 11 (16yrs ago) and caught very early as my older brother was also T1. The first thing my mum always did was check our sugar when we were illand luckily she did, as I wasn't even ill, just tired and very thirsty.
Ive had lots of different types of insulin regimens over the years, including self medicating with some crazy drugs I found in canada, desperately trying to cure myself, convinced I had been misdiagnosed! I am now on a pump, have been for a few months now, and have finally accepted I have Type 1 diabetes
I will never give up the fight trying to cure or at the very least improve my condition, but I know that I wont be alive long enough to do anything usefull if i dont take the bloomin' insulin!
so thats where i'm at just now.
