Hi all

i have been set a goal by work mates to run the race for life in may.. I am terrified!! I haven't run ever in my life! I'm told to start off slowly etc but I just don't know where to start. I have another problem, I'm embarrassed in the gym on the treadmill I seem to be heavy footed and sound heavy when trying to run on the machine... I know I shouldn't care what people think, but right now I do care.

id love any tips please :)

Hi Carly

I would say run outside - personally I much prefer it to being on a treadmill, and I also feel much less self conscious. If you are worried on the treadmill, you won't want to be on it very long and I think it will put you off training.

If you do some Googling, there should be loads of plans to help you work towards the Race for Life (is it the 5km one you are doing?). There is one called Couch to 5km. I've not done it but there are lots of threads on here about it.

Good luck.

start running outdoors, i made the mistake of training for my first run on the treadmill and i really struggled with it. its not as easy as running on a treadmill!
is it a 5K? try a couch to 5k app, they really are good for when your starting out.
or go on ASICS | Running Shoes and Apparel | Anima Sana In Corpore Sano | United Kingdom
i got a training plan for my marathon from that and its been really easy to follow and i can change it around to suit me (longer runs at weekend, shorter runs weekdays ect)

Yeah it's the 5k I'm doing! Scary, that's a long run for me right now!

thank you both so much for your advice, I have the couch 2 5k podcasts, gunna brave the outdoors on the weekend :)

thanks again, Carly

running outdoors too... dont let the weather put you off. it might be raining so you might want to skip a run or use the treadmill.... one thing to rememer, on ther day of your race for life are you going to not do it if its raining?
rain or shine, run outdoors if you can.

during my first half marathon, id never ran in the rain beofre and on the day it was heavy rain fall. got soaked through, was dreading the rain more than the run itself.

Hi Carly, definitely have a go with the c25k programme. I went from a total non running plump lass to running 5k regularly in about 11 weeks, so you should have no problem with that distance by may. The atmosphere of the day will pull you round too.

I also say get out there to run. I have no co-ordination on the treadmill and didn't want to pay out for it either so never did it but I do love being out and about in pretty much all weather except ice or blazing hot. I actually like running in the rain, it's refreshing!

Have you managed to get out yet?

Thanks for the advise hules. I haven't built up the courage to get out there yet! But, I had a session at the gym with an instructor, he got me running on the treadmill as part of interval training. He's got me running faster than I thought I could do, but it's a good start, I need to build up the courage to go out and run :)

You can do it! Well done for making the start! X

At the very start I'll admit to being a bit nervous of seeing anyone when I was out, but now I just don't care. I wave and grin at people I know (but don't stop, they don't need to be subjected to that :) ), smile and 'morning' or 'hiya' everyone else. I must look a bit of a sight bright red and shuffling along but I don't care and neither do they! I'm out there and it makes me feel really good about myself.

What do you have planned next?

Well I'm going to follow what the instructor has told me to do, just to build my fitness up a bit more, then hopefully I won't be so self conscious about going out running, I need to do it, before I do the 5k! I do enjoy what I can do on the treadmill, so hopefully being out will be 10 times better!

Sounds like a plan! X
