Walking and weightloss..

I'm around 245lb mark and I'm looking to loose 2lb a week on average so loose a stone every month or two. How much do you reckon I could loose per week walking maybe 1-2 miles a day?

I'd like to start off with 1 mile and work my way up - on average usually takes me around 20 mins to walk a mile and over time i'm hoping that i'd be able to do it quicker and work my way up to jogging.

Thanks x

I think they say u burn roughly 100 cals per mile. If ur carrying more weight then u should burn more. It's a good way of getting started!

Make sure u have comfy shoes, appropriate clothes for the weather and most importantly - some good tunes!

Vary ur routes so u don't get bored and involve others if u can. Add in hills when it gets easier. There's plenty of rambling clubs who do walls for beginners. They are really good to get u going and give u variety.

Good luck :)

Thanks :) I'm hoping that if the weather is alright I can go for a mile walk during my lunch hour - then I can do the gym and other exercises after work which will all hopefully kick everything into gear for me. Thanks for your help xx

I've been for my first jog today. Managed 3k of walking and jogging. Exhausted! So unfit but it's a start

Good luck to you x

I did my mile in the gym today as well as some time on the cross trainer and some weights to tone up my arms. Spend about an hour on my exercise bike at home on Wednesday ( half an hour for one hit and another 20-25 mins another time) I can never sit on my bike for too long as it hurts my bum! I've had to buy a padded seat to go over it so it's more comfortable so I can stay on it longer!

I can't wait until the weather gets better so I can go on some decent walks instead of being rained on! x

Oh don't get me wrong i'm doing other exercise as well, i'm heading to the gym two times a week and going a zumba class. I get bored when walking/ on the treadmill so figured if I set a goal of right, at least 1 mile per day or such as then i'll keep me motivated :) x

I find that the bike and x-trainer are the best to lose fat fairly quickly and drinking plenty of water whilst doing it, ensure you get something salty in your meals.

Walking worked for me - this coupled with diet definitely sped it up, it was only 30 mins a day but it really helped.

I love the bike, I've got a new seat for my exercise bike so i'm thinking i'll do that for half hour or so a night. I hate the cross trainer with a passion, for some reason I always get pins and needles in my toes and my feet start going numb so I can't be on it for that long which is irritating. I think if that didn't happen then I could push through but I always feel so unsafe x

Thats pretty odd, I get numb feet too - I have very flat feet, I have to wear insteps to stop that but it was frightening when i get it, nobody wants to be the one that fell of the x-trainer :D

I'm starting walking again tomorrow after 3 weeks off. I've been on a few walks with the family but not at a fast pace. Can't wait to burn some fat off after work tomorrow :)
I'll be having a go aty usual route - 3 miles - bet it kills me.

Good luck Kelley :)

just keep at it and it will get easier. Time urself. Get run keeper app if u have a smartphone. It will log ur miles n times which is nice to compare sometimes...

I use an app called runtastic which is great. I log any walking I do that's out of the norm for me. I love it cos it synch with my fitness pal and shows the calories burned etc.

First walk of the new year tonight :) dunno wether to walk straight from work, just keep going til I've hit a mile and half then double back on myself.... Get it over and done with. That way way there's no chance I'll get in my warm house and decide not to go lol x

cause of the rain i do my 2 mile leslie sansone at home before work three times a week but tomorrow will be first day back on it after being very naught good luck everyone x

hi steff
i just feel at the moment more confidence to walk and exercise at home i really wanting to start swimming again as i use to love it at i small pace very slow but felt great x

The walking will def help with your weight loss. I now walk on average 10km a day (super active dog and school runs!) but I started off with a 20 min walk every day and built it up. I'm now 2st down with 1st 9lb left to go. I'm looking for something else to do now. No rhythm for Zumba so might try spinning!
Try downloading a GPS app on your phone (if you have a smart phone?) to track your routes, distances, speed, calories burned (according to your weight) etc. I use run keeper which you can set daily/weekly/monthly targets. It's a great motivator. Map my run is also great but have a look and see what you like.
Best if luck with it!
