I've never experienced it myself, but it's the metabolic state your body goes into after a few days of eating a very low carb diet, like a VLCD or (I think) plans like Atkins. Your body starts burning its fat reserves, and I believe you also stop feeling hungry. Experts please jump in and correct me, lol. :) xx

Yes that's right, when you don't eat carbs or heavily restrict as with atkins, your body switches from burning easy fuel I.e carbs, sugar etc and burns fat. You aren't as hungry, and you have lots of energy.
You loose anything from 3-6 pounds a week, depending on how much you have to loose. It's a very efficient and fast way of loosing weight :)

My consultants description:

"It takes about three-four days to get into a Ketosis state which is where your body has gone from a carb burning engine to a fat burning engine."

Ketones are a bi-product of burning fat which is why the state is known as Ketosis. With any drastic change toy our body you are likely to get side effects like headaches and servere hunger in those three or four days but on the plus side being in Ketosis generally makes people feel happier and not as hungry.

All of the above are generalisations, I myself don't get the headaches getting into ketosis but unfortunatly neither does being in Ketosis curb my hunger that much.

The Cambridge Diet is a consultant based diet that can guide you through questions about Ketosis rather than just using online research. I had never heard about Ketosis before I started it. It's a very low calorie diet (starting out at 400-600 calories a day) that cuts out carbs and your nutrition comes from their products and protiens.

There are several ketosis based VLCDs on the market, including Lipotrim and Slim & Save to name 2 more. You don't cut out your carbs entirely as you still need some to survive, but you reduce them to less than 70g a day (50 for some of us who don't loose at 70, but we're few and far between) which may not sound that low until you start looking at the ingredients lists on the back of all your favourite foods and realise most are loaded with carbs.

Carbs & sugars are regarded as like a False fuel as your body will always burn those first before turning to the reserves it's built up over time when you've eaten more than you've burnt off. By reducing these certain things your body runs out of them and has to turn on fat burning mode in order to provide you with energy, hence why it's effective at weight loss, however I'm order to maintain your new weight you have to be very careful what you eat and be prepared to take a good hard look at your habits from before and completely change them otherwise you will pile it straight back on again.
