Gaining weight but sticking to diet and exercise

Hi everyone,

On Saturday morning I weighed 9st8lb. Saturday was my "day off" but I stuck to my diet all day bar a pizza for tea that night. Sunday, I burnt over 1k calories at the gym and I have been to the gym Monday, Tuesday and last night, as well as a body con class. I've ran about 15k this week (on the treadmill).

I weighed myself yesterday and today and the scales say 9st11 :( How is this possible! I have had 1100 calories a day and burnt around 500 a night on average. I've been told that exercise can cause muscles to retain water which leads to temporary weight gain but I stay hydrated throughout my gym sessions and drink around 3L water per day.

This has really knocked me as my christmas target was 9st 5lb but it feels impossible now.

I've lost over 7 stone in total but feel rubbish now. Any suggestions?

Thank you

Hi Flossy,

I feel your frustration, I'm sorry I have no advice other than maybe it is muscle weight, I, like you have been at the gym everynight burning off 200-300 cals am barely eating 800-1000 cals of good clean food and am not really losing anything, its like its a whole big nightmare! you have lost 7 stones which is great so you know you can do it, maybe its the plateau phase I have been hearing of! keep at it, don't be disheartened, hopefully someone better qualified will come along and give advice asap!

I plateaued at 11 stone for a while but I could cope with that as I wasn't working as hard at the gym and wasn't as strict food wise, so this now is really disheartening because of the amount of effort in giving it :(

Thank you for taking the time to reply x

Try increasing you calorie intake slightly for a few days , keep under your BMR but consume more than you have been. I have found this helps at plateus and I've seen lots of people on the forum who've found it helps too

Hi thanks for the replies. I have a few meals out planned this week so will stay within my calories but up them a tiny bit to see what happens, although this scares me in case I actually gain weight :-/

I burnt over 2200 calories this weekend and the scales haven't budged at all :'(

This is something interesting I found online. I've stopped weighing myself since I've been doing hardcore exercise as I think the scales can be deceiving and sometimes make you go backwards if you're not getting the numbers you want. I would measure inches lost Hun xxxx
