    Any quilters or sewers......

......I am a quilter and sewer.........why does that word sewer always remind me of a drain type thing???........anyway, I am a quilter........I make all manner of things, from large quilts to baby quilts, to throws, cushions, table runners, coasters........I even made a wigwam for my 4 year old nieces last birthday.......I am also just breaking into dress making, my daughter would love me make clothes for her that she has designed and I would like to have some clothes that are just right - you know the right length, style, colour, etc instead of only buying what fits me in the store LOL........it's not the best hobby when trying to lose weight as you do spend most of the day sitting at a machine but I love it, I cannot let a day pass without me stitching something, no matter how big or small.......

So just wondered if there were any other quilters out there???

Hi big-girl, I have just started sewing, not that good at it so have just bought some cheap material to practice on. I would love to design my own clothes eventually so my daughter bought me a book for my birthday that shows you how to make your own patterns, haven't tried it yet as getting my head around using a normal pattern first!! Have cut out a dress though so hopefully should start sewing that together this week

Hi Big-girl, Have wanted to get into quilting for some time now. Asked on another forum (craft forum) about what was needed to start and was quite surprised at how much it takes, what with those cutters etc,. So had to postpone it for now.
Did join a class but then found that it wasn't actually a teaching class, more like a get together for a chat and you picked up what you could from other people.
Did go to a tapestry class some time back and learned how to do some fab stitches and made some really nice things. Will have to try to put a pic of the sample stitches that I have in a folder.
Also, (hope I'm not getting too boring!..lol!!) I used to make dolls and still have alot of material, ribbons, lace etc, as they were fully (un)dressable with coat, hat, dress and pantaloons. Used to sell them for a fiver each and did make a fair bit of money too.
Perhaps you would post pictures of your handiwork for us to see...

Hi Berniea, always best to start off with cheap material, my only advise would be to prewash the fabric first, cheaper materials usually shrink, so you want that shrinkage to happen before you make your clothes......in fact all dressmaking fabrics tend to shrink.....the last thing you want to do is make something you love and then after wearing it once and washing it, it no longer fits

Hi Emmaline, if i can work out how/where to post some pics i will.....i'm a self taught quilter and some of the stuff they tell you that you need isn't really necessary.....you do need a rotary cutter and quilters ruler, but apart from that the rest is pretty much buy it as and when you want it

Yes big- girl I do believe I've seen the one in Cath kidson
Sadly my one is far more complicated and takes me at least an evening just to do one square. It has beads knitted into some and cable knit on others and patterns also!!!

Haha, it's not my thing either, I kill everything.......have tried hanging baskets and pots, but I forget to water them enough.......did have a beautiful flower bed planted up once, after everything flowered we cut it all back as advised, but when it all started growing again after the winter, my hubby dug it all up thinking it was weeds!!!!!

Haven't had time to start sewing yet but all I have bought is cheap material so I can practice. The size doesn't matter as I'm not happy making something for the size I am so it will just be put aside anyway, waiting for me to shrink myself lol

Haha, I love that, if only it were as easy as just shrinking ourselves I have enough clothes packed away in the loft which are all various sizes, but most of them a lot smaller from when i lost my weight before......am looking forward to getting back into them, especially my black jeans - i loved them.......

I've got some black jeans too. Levis 501 I had fitted for me when I'd list weight before. Never actually wore them. Ops
