Smile Scuba Diving in the beautiful blue

    SCUBA DIVING

I have just booked onto a PADI certified Open Water Diver Course! I'm incredibly ecstatic, I absolutely love the oceans, and planning to go into marine conservation and ecology at degree level after this year - just waiting on my results

Just wondering if there are any more divers, or snorkelers or even just swimmers out there who love the secret oceans and have any great Scuba stories to tell?

Also, any advice on what to expect when Scuba Diving would be useful

A whole new world waiting to be discovered

It's going to be held in the UK Do the open water dive in Capernwray quarry, which looks surprisingly nice so i'm excited, it was too expensive to go abroad to do the scuba course so i just thought id get qualified in the UK

Good idea. A PADI qualification is valid practically all over the world.

I qualified for my 20m (BSAC not PADI though....but basically the same) a few years ago (ouch....just realized it was about 6 years ago) and did my assessment dive to a wreck near Portland but unfortunately haven't had the funds to continue my love for all things water since then.

I think that is part of the reason for dieting currently as I was given a really large wet suit that was far too long for me but was needed because all my weight is around my waist and I felt quite embarrassed at the time. Although I can't have felt that bad as the diet only just started recently...

I found that taking your mask off actually is worse than taking your regulator out while you are doing your training...

I hope you fill us in on if you enjoy it!!

Had my first lesson on friday! Was amazing, even though it was in a pool it was still great! MY WEIGHT HAS EMBARASSED ME THOUGH ): ): ): We had to get out the pool with flippers on (so not using the stairs) at the deep end, and i had to get pulled up, and i didn't like the fact a guy was having to pull me up when i weigh like 15 stone! so i've been swimming twice since and learnt to get out the pool, every length i do i get out the pool so its a great ab and arm work out as well as the swimming! although i do look like a whale getting out (i cant do the hip movement) so i just sorta flop on and cock my leg over hahaha - not beautiful but it works and i'd rather do that then be dragged out

I trained as a PADI open water diver too ^^ on a scuba hol in Egypt. Spent most of the time out of the water doing theory stuff for it but I ADORED the diving we did get to do! Have since dived in Barbados too, really love it... so surreal and wonderful.

Always felt self conscious getting in suits because I was worried there wouldn't be one that fit a size 22! But next time I will be confident
Your swimming/arms work out (getting out of the pool) sounds great- awesome motivation! How is it all going? x

Hey! Yeah i've been swimming A LOT recently, i can tell my upper body strength has improved and i can now successfully get out the pool I'm not that graceful yet but at least i dont need someone to help! Scuba diving lessons are going great! Two more closed water dives in the pool then off to the lake district for two sundays to do the open water dives so i'm very excited! I also noticed there is a range of body sizes doing SCUBA so i don't feel as self conscious really but really need to lose more weight :P

It would be mine too if I could actually dive these days rather than spend most of the time trying not to be sick!

Am sure it's a balance/inner ear issue. Don't think I will dive in Thailand but will give it another go in the Maldives. I'd love to go back to Marsa Alam again as the diving there was superb. Here are some pics for you

Wow- that stingray shot is amazing! The blue on it is so luminous!!
What did you shoot those with? A DSLR and housing or a compact camera?

Am so jealous that you're going to Thailand- I really want to go!
Shame that you get sickness from diving now that sucks...

I wish a had a decent camera to do this! Although I am thinking of going to go to Kimmeridge Bay next summer to do some snorkelling (It's only 6m at its deepest so pointless getting diving gear together) Its in Dorset though and i live up North so it will be a holiday job! But i think it's meant to be brilliant for photography there I am thinking of getting a go pro and just the underwater case, what camera do you have/ would you want? I am not a camera geek so no nothing about them but really want an underwater camera!

I have a Sony Compact System Camera (between a compact and a DSLR) so interchangable lenses but not the level of a DSLR - or at least I don't know how to use it, a pro might have better luck than I do in some of my photos.

At the time of buying my camera there was no housing available so I bought one of those bags you can place your camera in and triple seal it up to use underwater. It cost me about 25-30 and I was a tad on the sceptical side so tested it thoroughly at home before venturing out with it and using it with the camera inside but I was pleasently surprised! We took the bag on it's first outing on our honeymoon and had no issues at all.

There are a few things to note with this though...if you have a switch to flick to turn your camera on and off then this might be harder to do when the camera is in the bag and also the length of the barrel vs the length of the lens I had on meant that sometimes if the camera moved about in the bag the resulting photos had a black ring around it. For a cheap alternative to housing it was really great and maybe one day I will upgrade but for the very few times I have had a chance to take it out it does the job.
