Sydney August 2013

Dave's little girl
Husband and I are planning to go to Sydney for our third wedding anniversary. I cant wait to go, Im so excited and its over a year away yet.

Has anyone been?

I love Australia! Haven't made it to Sydney just yet but we're planning to move there in the next few years. I've heard it's very touristy, but the weather isn't as extreme which is a good thing! If you can, get out to the Blue Mountains, spectular views!

we were planning the summer, their winter, so the heat wouldnt be so intense - well that and its the only time really I can have holiday - I work in a school.

Hi, we went to Sydney in 2008. (My sister lives in Adelaide and we visited for a month, so as we had plenty of time to look around, we had a weekend in Sydney)
I liked it very much.. Very much a high rise/big city feel about it. It feels very 'alive'.. We were there (Australia) from beginning of July to beginning of Aug and our trip to Sydney was probably in the 3rd week of our stay. The weather felt very cold to us, but as we live on the south coast of Spain, we had just left temps of 40plus to arrive in Australias winter!!
I wanted to do the walk across the Harbour Bridge as I am a keen amateur photographer, but I found out that you cant take your own camera equipment ( for safety reasons in case you drop them!) so it seemed a little pointless. We did get the ferry over to Taronga Zoo, which was fab... We bought tickets for the tourist bus and that was a good idea, as it was our means of getting around as well as being informative about what there is to see and do.
its a fab place, with wonderful places to eat and drink. Chinatown is fab. We stayed in Darlinghurst, nr Kings Cross. It was a 'colourful' area! But we NEVER felt ill at ease or threatened in any way...
Hope that helps! If there is anything else I can think of that we saw/did, I will get back to you on this thread if you like?

Yes please that would be brilliant. We have just returned from Prague and this is our next big holiday. Its 420 days away but I am still so excited for it already!

how much spending money will be required for a two week break? we dont eat out a lot, will probably be once a day - breakfast and lunch will be bits from the supermarket that we take back to the hotel - we did this in new york too and saved a fortune!

Frankly, it really depends on what you want to do....if your just eating out, if you estimated it's the same price as UK, you'll be covered, but I know the 1st time I decided to take a fair bit, as I didn't want to miss out on any trips I fancied once I arrived. I did a trip to the blue mountains, day in Taronga zoo - yes, it can take all day, it's huge! They even have a cable car thing, I also bought a travel card which covered buses, trains & ferries (that was good value for money), then I climbed the harbour bridge, and went up to Brisbane too. Supermarkets are pretty reasonable, I found that the price in dollars was approx the same as UK, but of course the exchange rate reduced it considerably.
Food is varied, so you can get a good range of prices like here...pretty cheap, and really too flipping expensive, I took twice what I would have done if I was going to Spain or Greece, and brought half of it home....I just didn't didn't want to go all that way, to find that I couldn't do everything if I wanted to.
Sorry, I know that's not really a proper answer....but make sure you have plenty if needed, I expected it to be my only trip....however, I was lucky and went again (thanks to a biz trip to Singapore, so I was already half way there)
Suggest you look at what you want to do, and tale it from there)

Wow - About 30 weeks away now.
We are going in to book on Monday.
All I have to find is my spending money!
ARGH!! I cant wait.

How much weight can I loose in 30 weeks?!

We have just got back from Sydney - there for a week then went over to Manly and stayed there for a week then back to Sydney - been a few times.
You must not miss Manley, go over on the ferry from near The Opera House, takes about 25 mins.
Bridge Climb is an expensive touristy thing to do - go up the "Pylon" on the Bridge - brilliant views from there and there is a small museum inside it. A few dollars to go up it.
We ate at the fish market behind Darlinghurst Harbour a couple of times.
Blue Mountains another "must do" either with a tour or you can do it on your own on the train and catch the circular bus when you get there.
Paddy's Market near to China Town. Walk through Queen Victoria Building - near Town Hall and very big Woolies - fantastic shops for looking in, fabulous building.
Bondi Beach - (of course) - go on the train then catch the bus at the terminus - do the Coogee coastal path walk.
Walk round Kings Cross - (red light area) nice cheapish pubs and restaurants up ther
Woolworths is a food Supermarket - the other one Coles.

Australia in general and Sydney especially is now very expensive for us Brits with the rubbish exchange rates. You can spend shed loads of money or do things on the cheap (like what we do :D) there are lots of nice place to visit which don't cost a fortune.

You will love it - that is why we keep going back.

The only thing that worries me is the distance it is away. I mean, you cant just hop on a plane and be back within a few hours if needed.

No negatives - that is what you are losing your weight for.:)

It is a day away not a week so enjoy it. We spend long periods of time (and distance) away from UK and have had to go back a couple of times but don't spend all my time worrying about it.

I've got the spending money. I haven't lost as much weight as I'd of liked, but I'm going and going to enjoy it regardless of my size/weight! Theres always time before the next holiday to loose weight. Its under four weeks away now!!

Enjoy Sydney Baby Cakes, am sure you will have a great time. We are going in November for almost 4 weeks, my step daughter and her husband moved out there 4 years ago, then my youngest son went out there this Jan, so really looking forward to seeing them.
We were out there 2 1/2 years ago.

We did bridge climb which is expensive but the views are amazing. Also went up the Sydney tower.
Manly is a great beach and the boat ride there is lovely.
Olympic park is lovely which if I remember rightly does not charge you to get in, you can hire bikes to go round on as it is huge.
Blue Mountains beautiful.
I really enjoyed Featherdale which is an animal park where the kangaroos and wallabies roam around where you can feed them. We went early in morning so was not too busy.
Fireworks every Saturday night at Darling Harbour is worth seeing and does not cost a thing.
There are so many places to visit and the buses, trains and water taxis are all quite reasonably priced.

Which airline are you going by and where are you stopping on way, last time we stopped at Taiwan, this time we are going via Singapore, where I used to live years ago.

Have a fantastic time I am sure you will.

We are flying with Singapore airline, stopping in Singapore. The longest stop is 2 hours on the way back.

I cant wait. I'm no where near where I wanted to be weight wise but it isn't going to stop me making the most of it. its under three weeks away now, I'm getting so excited!

We are going by Singapore airlines, our longest stop over is two hours too, are you going on the air bus? When we went last time we had 5 hours in Taiwan.

Don't worry about the weight loss just go out there and have the best time ever am sure you will have a great time. :)
