Serious back problems = joining Slimming World

I've never been overweight before, but have failed to lose the 6 stone I gained during my last pregnancy, where I also ended up in a wheelchair and almost completely immobile due to issues with my pelvis and spine.

I am in daily pain with severely restricted mobility, the best possible thing I can do to aid my recovery is lose weight! I've been on and off paleo and/or Atkins for the past two years and failing miserably so am joining Slimming World on Monday. I have never tried a slimming club before but it seems to be a relatively flexible way of eating... and with the moral support and weekly weigh ins, I stand a better chance of success!

I have two wonderful kids and desperately want to be able to run after them, pain free and be the active person I have always been. Even just being able to keep on top of the housework would be awesome!

I have an amazing husband, who will be supporting me 100% I do yoga every day to strengthen my back and core musles but even those moves are limited because of my back issues so would love to be able to increase the range of yoga and add other activities and exercise too. At the moment I have some herniated discs so once they have healed, and i've shifted some weight, i'm looking forward to some dance classes and longs walks with my stupid fluff ball of a dulux dog!

You sound really positive and like you've got something serious to aim for - playing with your kids. I've got that motivation too and I'm hoping Slimming World will get me there too!

And in a strange twist of fate (I was in so much pain this weekend that I re-evaluated the situation) I decided that I need to lose weight quickly, much more quickly than I would expect to via Slimming World, so after a bit of intense researching, i've ordered my first month of Slim & Save. I know that losing even a few stone will decrease the pain I am in and increase my mobility, so the sooner the better, quite frankly! I may switch to Slimming World once my mobility improves (as my Dr can refer me). Will keep you updated ;-)

    Hi there,
I thought I'd reply to your post as I'm also trying to lose weight after back issues - trapped nerves and 6 stone to lose.
I'm going to do slimming world.
I trapped my nerve 11 months ago and it's improved tremendously. I did well on herbal anti-inflamatory medicines and lots of physio exercises daily.
But I still have mega pounds to lose.
    Start date 20th Jan 2014 Weight 15st 12lb
    First goal 7lb loss (15st 5lb)
Second goal a total of 14lb loss (14st 12 lb)
    Third goal a total 21lb loss (14st 5lb)
    Fourth goal a total of 28lb loss ( 13st 12lb )

I've only lost 11% of my body weight and have gone from only being able to walk about 500 metres before getting so much back pain I had to rest up to walking 6-9 miles most days pain free (apart from my feet and legs) so it certainly can be done. Good luck on your journey

Wow Ben really? That gives me so much hope! 11% would be slightly less than 2 stone for me so I could be there and mobile in no time.

I have an app with an orthopaedic surgeon next week as I have long standing back issues (some of my vertebrae are too small and wearing away) and they haven't looked at my spine or discs for 6 years (during which time i've spent the last 2 either pregnant or 6 stone overweight), my GP is pretty sure I have a few herniated discs at least, so losing any amount of weight should really ease the pressure off my poor back.

I think it's easy to underestimate how much weight 2 stone actually is when we think of it as weight on a person. In actual fact 2 stone, or 28lbs, or 12.7kg is pretty heavy. You know in the supermarket the 6 packs of bottled water? No not the small 500ml bottles but the large 2 litre ones. Well one of them is 12kg and they feel really heavy even just trying to get one into a trolly, imagine taking it with you everywhere you go, all day every day! Even if your back isn't completely cured after 2 stone it's pretty impossible to think that it's not going to be much improved in my opinion. The difference you feel for losing it will spur you on to lose more, as the more you lose the better you will feel. Good luck

Gingerninja...I too have lumber area disk problems, from when I first hurt myself at 21 to now hitting 40 this year and 3 babies later I gained 8 stone from lack of being able to excersise, getting a car and bad bad lifestyle choices coupled with depression.

Your good news is you aren't waiting 19 years and to stop smoking and leave a husband like I did. I wish you luck and I'll be here watching also, and losing also x
