What diet plan to follow

Hi all, I'm new to the site and trying to decide what road to go down. I am recently engaged and am petrified at the thoughts of trying on dresses the way I look now. I'd really appreciate anyone's advice and apologies for the long post.

Last year I was diagnosed with a condition that meant I could not exercise at all and I have only recently begun to walk again. I went from being fairly active with an alright diet to being completely bed ridden and saying sod this and eating whatever I liked. I am now 75kg, up 10kg and I am disgusted with myself. None of my clothes fit anymore. I never realised how quickly weight could creep up when you can't exercise at all to keep it off.

The thing is I just don't know where to start, there are so many different options. I know I need 'rules' or guidelines to help me but unsure whether to go low carb, slimming world, paleo, herbalife or 5:2. I would like a bigger weightloss to begin with to keep me motivated and to be able to try on a wedding dress without crying but in the long term I would like something more sustainable like eating clean with one cheat day a week. Living with a hungry man who loves junk food isn't helping either as it is always around.

I just don't know what to choose, I originally planned on doing the idiot proof diet or Atkins as I feel it would suit me. Things like nights out and dinners always seem to come up though and I had read that once you cheat you leave ketosis and bloat.

My sister is doing herbalife and getting on great but I am afraid of it as it doesn't seem sustainable. I need something that will give me a kick start but that I can tweak a little when I see results so that I can still live a normal life with occasional treats that won't ruin everything. I'm afraid of losing and then piling it back on. I need to find a balance. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what I should do or anyone a similar weight and height to me to begin with and what worked for you? (5'5 and 75kg)

Thanks and sorry about the length, I'm just so confused!

Hi crunchie

I'd recommend slimming world. I have tried most diets and that is the one that is most sustainable I would say, it's easy to make the right choices when eating out, nod you can have treats, plus it's easy to stick to as you don't have to count points or calories.

Good luck!

I would say slimming world too. Im had done everything in past and never felt slimming so easy to me. Good luck. What ever you choose, you will do fine and be perfect by the time big day comes :)

Thanks a million for that. I like the sound of slimming world as it seems like more of a lifestyle thing than a diet. Do you all do it in groups or online? I could travel to a nearby town to do it if it's better than doing it online

The groups were what kept me on track, and having a good leader helps too :)

Hi there, just came across your post and it struck a chord. Hopefully you've come across something that suits you and you are feeling positive about your weightloss journey :) I too am recently engaged (congratulations btw, exciting times ahead!), but have been suffering with a back injury, that while it hasn't affected me to the same extent as your illness, it has resulted in not being able to exercise for nearly 2 years (slowly getting back on track). A combination of that and the low mood/exhaustion/work troubles as a result of the constant pain has seen me go up a stone in weight. Not the end of world, but enough to make me dread dress shopping - and definitely not the weight I want to be getting married!

I know low carb diet will get the initial weightloss started, but I've tried and failed on that before. Cooking for a growing man usually puts paid to that! I've seen great results amongst friends who have done Slimming World and it does seem like more of a sustainable lifestyle. I've been to three meetings so far, but have found the leader to be kind of lacking and have no family or friends close by for support, so this is the next step :)
