daily mail article about alternate day fasting

Hi Mrsc long time no see xx
This part interested me as I am def more Pizza and lasagne

The problem was I couldn’t see myself doing three-day fasts regularly, so I tried out something less extreme. I met Dr Krista Varady, of the University of Illinois, Chicago. She explained the merits of Alternate Day Fasting (ADF).

One day you eat whatever you want, the next day you fast. Even on my fasting days I would be allowed about 600 calories.

She said: ‘We recently finished a trial that looked at two different groups, about 16 people in each, doing ADF for ten weeks. We put one group on a low-fat diet, eating lean meats fruits and vegetables. The other group were eating lasagne and pizza. Both groups lost weight but the people eating high-fat meals lost the same amount of weight as those eating low-fat meals.’
And it wasn’t just weight loss. Both groups saw similar falls in the ‘bad’ cholesterol, LDL, and in blood pressure.
I gave it a go, but found it too hard and ended up doing a 600-calorie fast one or two days a week.
I started out at 13½ st. After six weeks on my new regime, I have lost 20lb. My cholesterol, blood glucose and IGF-1 have all improved markedly.

I do believe that with intermittent fasting I can slow down my cells and extend my healthy years. So I plan to stick with it.

I’ll let you know next year if I succeed.

I love what Juddd does to my body, don't know what exactly is happening but I def feel more energetic, slimmer and happier because I no longer feel guilty about enjoying a meal with my Husband, its my perfect plan xx

Yeah I've told a few friends about my alternate day fasting and they think i'm harming myself, that it wont be easy to stick to and that the weight will all pile back on. Blah to them I say.

I'm eating as much over the week as I would on ww! And this is the easiest diet I've ever done. I get a break from all nasty diet thoughts every other day, its doing my mental state and happiness the world of good. I'm in a great mood pretty much all of the time since I started.

there is a programme on bbc2 tomorrow night, horizon, on eating and fasting think its called eat, fast and live longer, so will defo be taking a look at that. seems the eat-fast diet is catching on!

And we can say we did it before it was a trend... ohhhh yeaaaaah

You certainly can. I have just watched the Horizon programme and was wondering if i can have 3 slimfast or slimmm shakes a day, which would be between 630-690 cals per day and then eat normally the next day, but what would i eat, is it governed by calories, or can i eat sugar etc if i want to, plus how many calories would you suggest.

Thanking you in advance.

I don't know if you managed to watch the programme, I did, & it made very interesting watching, I'd recommed trying to catch it on iplayer. The programme promoted fasting as a way of keeping healthy & longlife rather than a way to lose weight. Through an interpreter they spoke to the guy who is 101 & ran a marathon:eek: he put his longeivity down to eating 'children size' potions.

Induction of 2 weeks which to be honest everyone I know from this forum stays on as the weight comes off best then is on average 500/2000 if you google dr johnson up day down day diet you will be able to calculate your cals but as a rule of thumb 500/2000 is about right. You should really try to stick to 500 or under especially the first 2 weeks, its not just about having more on your DD and then less on your UP to compensate, its more complex than that, there needs to be a big swing between cals fast and famine, I would stronglyt recommend sticking to 500 for at least 2 weeks and then see how you get on. The DD are the magic so try to stick to them after all its just one day dieting at a time. Don't worry too much about sticking to your up day cals as long as you eat at least 1800 you should be fine, its equally important to eat your UP day cals , don't try to limit them to a cal controlled amount i.e 1200- 1400 etc as you will be defeating the object. Good luck hope you take the plunge x

Hi, im definately going to give this a go, as far as weight goes, i dont have loads to lose, but i do seem to be carrying the extra stone around my middle. i really do have to remind myself to eat sometimes, so this really does sound perfect and fantastic that it has possible health benefits. Im going to try mon, wed, fri as down days and see how that works for me and then have the weekend off, with a more subdued day on Sunday, as mentioned somewhere on here, thanks for the advice and i will post every monday my weigh in and thoughts briefly. i am a bit scared at eating today without counting, but i will give it a go.

Thanks for the article, I remember doing "The Scarsdale Diet" many years ago and it works, two weeks on two weeks off, but it is hard. So JUDD really appeals, I'm going to give it a go

I'm going to watch the programme tonight on iplayer - but think it sounds really interesting.

I'm currently on Cambridge - which is a VLCD about 500-600 calories a day - and haven't found to too difficult to stick to - except when there's a night out, or a friends BBQ. So ADF sounds like a really great alternative.

Think I'm going to stick with Cambridge until I get closer to my goal weight - but then I'm thinking of starting ADF - anyone got any good recipe sites for 3 meals a day totalling 600 cals - is 3 meals a day the best way to do it?

Is there an ADF section on minimins??

The doc on the programme did a 3/4 day fast, and apparently thats to be done every month/2 months. Then they went on to discover if it were possible to make that theory more doable in real life, hence coming across the alternation. I personally could NOT do a 3 day fast. And he found the advantages pretty similar health wise between the 3 day fast once a month and the 2:5 week ratio fast.

Its on iPlayer! Get watching! BBC iPlayer - Horizon: 2012-2013: Eat, Fast and Live Longer just so you can't say you can't find it ;)

As they were discussing the "feed day" (our UpDay/UD) they were eating some scrummy looking burgers! I was on my down day and it was torrture haha

This is the Alternate Day Fast Section. It is called Johnson's Up Day, Down Day Diet, hence JUDDD, I bought the book from Amazon and read it in an afternoon. Well worth reading as it tells you all the scientific facts and why it is good for your body in more ways than just losing weight. It also gives you some recipes too....

It always tickles me the amount of people who just see Juddd as a way of losing the last few pounds or maintaining, its a diet plan in its own right ???:) Your goal is Christmas right according to your stats thats perfectly doable on Juddd. I am not knocking vlcd s been there done it but you don't have stones to lose so why put yourself through it. Anyhoo you can use shakes on DD if you want to make up the recommended 500 cals, but I never have, I have anything really, sometimes grazing is best sometimes eating at set mealtimes, sometimes just waiting till you are actually hungry its all individual really you have to see what suits you best .
The thing with Juddd which is totally different from any other plan I have been on is the way it affects your body shape quicker than your actual weight loss, you may be looking at my signature weight loss and thinking thats a bit slow for me, but what those stats don't tell you is that I am now a size smaller than I was last summer when after a short stint on a vlcd I was 11 7, I am now 12 4 but am a size smaller, sounds unbelievable but its true, I have just sold the dress I slimmed down to fit into last year because its too big and I only intend on getting smaller, with juddd or ADF you lose Fat not muscle or water, I started a thread about it on the main board somewhere, its an interesting read. Good luck with whatever you decide to do x

All you have to do is take a look at my losses...

I did Exante (3 shakes a day 200 cals each). Lost 7lbs and 1lb, and I was utterly miserable...

i agree, when i first started CD i was losing on average 6lbs a fortnight which i was happy with as it was quick and regular, now im lucky to lose 2lbs a fortnight and for what? a few measly shakes and bucket loads of water every day! not worth it any more, JUDDD is the way forward for me and i'll be happier losing 1lb a week to get my last stone off as i'll be eating real food with yummy flavour!

That's exactly what was happening to me on CD - down to a pound a week!! Not worth the suffering at all. And then first week on JUDDDD and I lost 3 pounds yay!!!! It's so easy I wish I found it years ago :) x

We kind of started this today ! Had a day of under 500 cal. Tomorrow I eat :) be very interested to see if this works for me. Done sw for 1.5 years and weight loss stalled with 5 lbs to go!! Lol
I was impressed that I could eat so little and no one died :) just goes to show I could eat less!! Lol

Hi to all. I have started on the Juddd eating regime today. Am excited to see yow well it works - it's so refreshing to know that what I am not allowed today I can have if I want it tomorrow - makes dieting so easy!

I have tried LL, CD and exante with little success as the long stretch of time not eating is soul destroying.

You don't need to eat less just differently :) I've had a DD today and so I'm now soaking in the bath and planning an early night so I get to my UD quicker lol! I have a bacon and fried egg bagel planned for breakfast :) yay!!!! Xx
