Michael Mosley Eat, Fast and Live Longer on BBC

Hiya girlies, did you see this program on Monday night? I found it very interesting and so much of it has struck a cord with me. Afterwards both myself and my sister were talking about my grandma. She lived until she was 82 and was a thin woman all her life and never watched what she ate, Romanian food especially in the Country is very rich, everything is enjoyed with copious amounts of fat thrown in. However one thing she always did do was fast every Friday for religious reasons. She would eat nothing that day until 8pm after the sun has set and then she would have a no protein or dairy meal, strictly vegetarian.

Wow!

Will definitely need to catch that on BBC iPlayer.

I have a muslim colleague who is currently fasting and she looks so miserable (especially at lunch time) but she did recommended fasting and said our bodies get used to it.

Thanks Mon, let's see what this programmes all about ;)

It would definitely be a program I would recommend to catch up on IPlayer, it left us very inspired and Michael referred to it as revolutionary. I do have to add that I am more interested in doing this for health reasons rather than shifting weight especially as I am so close to target. I would also like to think I would find it a bit easier to consolidate my loss. As much as I rave about a high protein low fat diet (and i do cause i think is ace) the fact that I keep my body on full throttle is not something I am proud off and the fact that i might increase my risk of disease scares me.

One of the guys that works for me is doing a fasting diet, not sure what all the info on it is though. I know he only has 2 meals a day plus 1 snack & I know there are rules but I haven't asked him what they are

The programme was really fascinating and I intend to delve a bit deeper into research over the next few days (including GrumpyWino's link - thank you xxx)

Does anyone have any knowledge/experience of the Johnson Up Down Day (JUDD) diet (which is also on these boards)?

Mon, fascinating and enjoyable to read about your grandma :D

Finally watched this, very interesting, haven't made up my mind on this but will look into it some more. It was only when I cut carbs that I could go entire shifts in a demanding job without feeling ill if there wasn't time to eat. A small meal of protein and fat will keep me going for ages. In my carb days I was constantly hungry, and if I was delayed eating I would feel pretty rough. No, no no I am not diabetic, just not meant to eat carbs!!

i read the title as eat fast.... as in quickly lol

It does make you think doesn't it? I have been researching it a bit and I wish I had some spare time to do it properly. 1am its not really the time to do it :(

I'm sticking with Dukan for the time being, got to get to my goal weight! But the health benefits of fasting have really got my attention, so it is something for me to look into for the nearish future. I want to compare it with low carb living, as there is as lot more evidence for similar health benefits (despite the anti protein bit in the show). It looks like there are a number of low carbers who also fast, so thats something to consider.

I have made my mind up as well and will start fasting next week, not sure what pattern I will follow yet need to read more. But I am still keeping my body in the GO GO GO Dukan mode until I got to target.

I think I might do Dukan (One PP meal/Two PV meals each day) and then 2 fasting days (500 cals) per week from Monday.

I will see the outcome until Aug 26th (Notting Hill Carnival).

That's the guy and program i was referring to Trinni.:D

Hey Trini, thanks for that link! It's interesting to see how someone who's a proper foodie is approaching the two fast days. Although, it strikes me that that's a lot of organisation, and I don't think I could really go back to calorie counting to that extent (it's been a fair few years, lol)...

In the documentary, Michael Mosley has breakfast & then fasts the rest of the day, and I think he says something at that point about the doctor involved not specifying WHEN the calories had to be ingested, but the American doctor who was doing the trials with people doing alternate day 'fasting' I think said they were all eating at lunch? Those who have seen the film, does anyone think that the point would be actually going for solid periods of not ingesting any calories? Rather than scant calories regularly throughout the day I mean? When we started yesterday, my partner was all going back through calorie charts to work out what he could have throughout the day, but surely this is just a 'very low calorie' day instead of actually fasting? Or does it not make a difference? What say you?

I notice in that link to 'Tinned Tomatoes' that she was hungry at the end of the day. That's what I'm afraid of- that I'll be hungry with regular scant amounts of food, and I can't say as I was last night just fasting. I did find that I wasn't as sleepy as I usually am, at the end of a day spent chasing a toddler around though.

I wonder too, with Dukaning at the same time, what the weight 'bounce back' will be after the two fasting days. Questions, question, lol....:)

It better not lol! But I will do a trial next week and see how it goes.

I think on my fasting days, I will eat at 12ish and about 5ish.

I've noticed that recently I've been getting hungry at 5pm but because I dont get home until about 6pm, the hunger pang just goes away.

My point being that the feeling of hunger does not stay around for too long :)

I try not to eat after about 7:30, so I think I shall be fine.
