    Question happy being fat?

    Hi,

I would like to get your opinion on the subject - Do you believe fat people are really happy with being fat?

I reckon you are a good bunch of people to ask this to as everyone here is fat or has been fat!

I personally dont believe that fat people are happy being fat and that anyone who says they are happy and they dont want to loose weight is just hiding their true feelings.

My friend is over weight, she doesnt know Im on LT as she hates it when I even mention loosing weight. She thinks flat stomachs are gross and thin people are disgusting. She says she is happy being fat.

This subject is ruining our friendship now as we have 2 completley different views on this subject.

I do have a problem believing her, and I have been on other forums where fat people are rejoicing in the fact they fat... I dont get it. I was wondering if anyone here can shed any light on this subject for me?

Are there people who genuinely love being fat? Or are they just in a stage of denial?

Blimey talk about asking a difficult question on a Sunday morning!! Personally no I wasn't able to be fat and happy although lord knows I'd tried. I am not sure about others, I think it is possible to reach a point of acceptance so that you feel comfortable in your own skin... whether that is happiness is open to debate.

Hmmmmm, interesting 1 Julz.......all I know is I have never been happy bein Fat. Ive been both (supersize and too thin...supposidly) and Fat was deffo the worst, but I spose if youve never been thin then you might just resign yourself to the fact thats how you are and get on with life telling yourself your happy cos you dont know any different? I dont belive it myself as the difference in your health between the 2 is unbelievable. Think im with you on this 1 and youll just have to agree to disagree with your friend cos if shes giving you such a hard time then it sound a bit over the top to me x

    Hi Julz

I am still fat and yes I am happy, there are 2 reasons I am loosing weight:
    1) To help concieving
    2) I want to be able to buy clothes from any shop rather than being forced to the back of the shop and having a lot less choice!

If I was able to have the above I would not be loosing weight. I would not want to be abny bigger that purly for health reasons but as a person I am happy and confident. I think alot of the question you are asking is to do with upbringing.
I was accepted as being fat, apart from in school I have not been judged and now I am an adult I dont really care what people think of me, if you dont like it, dont look!

I do have my off days when I look at picstures and think OMG look at me - but I can almost guarantee that everybody no matter what size has though days!

I am happy - yes but I know to get what I want I have to loose weight!

Everyone is different and if your friend says she is happy then believe her, if she does not want to do anything about her weight then you can not change her mind. Just accept her for who she is and what she wants. Dont let it come between your friendship, she is the same person underneath after all.

    Hi,

Thanks for your comment... when I said I find it hard to believe that people are happy being fat... I didnt meant happiness in the full sense of the word as in their whole emotions about life, I just mean happy about being fat.

I do believe you can be fat and happy, I just find it difficult to believe you can be happy about being fat.

I smoked for years... I enjoyed it, but I always wished I didnt smoke, cos I knew it was bad for me. I have been overweight for a few years, and I have been a happy person, but I was never happy with my weight. To me I can be unsatisfied with an area of my life and still be happy in general.

Being obese brings increased rates of ill health and I simply struggle to understand how this is something that people can be happy with.

    Sorry Hun

I must have totally misread that then! Doh!!!

Some people dont think about the health risks until they occur, for example I never thought about what my weight was doing to my health until we started to try for children, after a couple of years I went to see doc who said that before they would do anything I had to loose weight.

I would not have thought about this before, I was obv living in my own little world of my weight not being an issue. I was happy being fat, because in my mind I was not fat! (Does that make sense).

Some people choose not to see what others do when we look in the mirror. A bit like those with anorexia who are on the verge of death because they are so thin but still see themselves as fat when they look in the mirror. It is totally a mind thing. I am not saying your friend see's herself as skinny but she prob does not see what you see and does not see the risks invloved in being fat.

Maybe I have missed the point again so sorry if I have.

    Hey...

I totally get what you mean cos I can totally relate to this also! I feel like I must have lived the last 2 years in my own wee bubble and 2 stone has just crept on without me hardly noticing, I was too busy enjoying my food and treating myself to chineses after a good days work, or a wee bar of chocolate every night, or a wee bun with a cup of tea, or.... (you get the picture!)

I do totally love food, and I can totally relate to anyone who loves food and eats too much!!! Cos that is me too!! lol

With my friend I feel that I cant tell her I am on LT as she will react badly to it and that will discourage me. A couple of months ago I told her I was going to go on a healty eating diet and exercise plan, and she gave me a lecture about how flat stomachs look disgusting and that being overweight is better for someone my age, and that I should not try to be young again and I should just accept who I am and be happy. I just feel our whole outlooks in life are completely different now so it is a shock for me to do LT without her support, as we used to tell each other everything.

I have been reading your posts and you definitely sound like a happy and upbeat person and I am looking forward to seeing the pounds drop off and you achieving your goal weight! You have a great reason to loose weight... I wish you all the best with starting your family. x

I hope I can bag a man and start a family at the end of my LT journey also! lol

I really find it hard to believe that you can be happy being fat, yes I agree you do see fat people that are happy, confident and enjoy their lives immensely, however, I feel that if you told them that you could make them slim, whatever that meant to them 8, 10 or even 13 stone and that they could stay that way whatever they ate then they would go for it.

Just look at Dawn French she is funny, happy and has more confidence than you can even measure (Darcy Bussell, ballet sketch OMG) she did actually say herself, that she is happy being large. She has even created a clothing range for large ladies and loves it. On the other hand she also did loose a heck of a lot of weight for her wedding because she wanted to look her best and have nice pictures, what does that tell you? She said that it was good being slim for 10 minutes but she started putting the weight back on at the reception.

I truly believe that we tell ourselves things that shield us from the hurtful truth, it is extremely hard to loose weight even harder to maintain, things happen in life that send us spinning out of control often and its hard to admit, even to those that you love that your life/body/weight is not exactly as you want it to be, we don’t like to be seen as failures and so mask the truth with a great big smile.

Think you have said it really, sure you can be fat and happy but personally I don't believe you can be happy about been fat, what with; 1.health problems(the list is endless)
    2.how clothes hang on you
3.how people look and perceive you
4.how you need seat belt extensions on aircraft
5.how you cant jump and run around
6.how funfair rides are out of the question
7.how clothes shopping is so embarrassing
    anon, anon, anon!
Nope you cant be happy about been fat IMHO.
Also I think dieting is the single most difficult thing to do, smoking well you just don't need fags but food you do, so getting the food balance correct can be like juggling water with 2 forks! xx

    Hi Gaz,

Your definitely right... stopping smoking (although probably one of the hardest things to do!) is completley different to going on a diet! You can cut fags out forever, but your body needs food to live.

So you been clothes shopping Gary? I bet you feel great now trying on size 32 jeans!!! Thats an awesome acheivement!

Thank you, I do try to just say how I feel, normally it comes out as one great ramble lol.

I am going to my first LL meeting tomorrow evening and am sooooo looking forward to it. I just really want to get started now, it is weird there is like a switch in your head that needs to engage and your ready, its just a shame I got to 20 stone before that happened. I managed to loose a stone on my own since Christmas but not enough.

So here I go and hope to have the same success as you all have had on here, just love this site, you all seem to be as passionate, commited and crazy weird as I am. (Compliment, I hope lol)

Thanks again for your comments and thank you for asking the question, I think people need to really see how everyone else feels sometimes, its not just you after all. xx
