Jazz's Jerky Journey to Thinner Peace

    Hello

Like many, I expect, I've been trying to lose weight my whole life. Sometimes actually managing to lose a few pounds, sometimes even a few stones, but always putting the whole lot back on.

Having reached 17st 1lb (again), I've decided it's time to take action once and for all, this time by calorie counting. It feels like I've done every diet in the world, from very low calorie diets (I lost 5.5 stones on Cambridge a few years back) to WW and SW but this time, I'm just going to count. I've been to one of those websites that calculates your total daily energy expenditure and it worked out that 1,650 calories a day should lose me a pound a week (ha ha, we'll see ).

I'm starting today. I can't be doing with hurting everywhere any more. I'm 44 but feel more like 84 - though I'm sure there are 84 year olds out there in far better nick than me. And the real reason for calorie counting is that I've recently found out I'm intolerant to wheat, dairy and eggs. That makes life a little complicated! I've known for a while that bread makes me ill (I'll spare you the details ) but the dairy and egg were an unpleasant shock. I've been experimenting with different foods for a few weeks now hoping that weight would just fall off after not eating the foods I'm intolerant to, but no luck.

In fact, having logged my calories for the food I'm planning to eat today, I've just realised that I've been eating a ridiculous number of calories while feeling very virtuous - doh.

And so it begins... I've had a read through some of the posts here and you all seem lovely, so I'm hoping you won't mind me hanging out here. It's going to be a loonnnggg journey to goal and it would be great to have some company.

Hope you're all having good weekends.

    Thanks Kimberlina x

So far so good. I had an enormous Sunday lunch but tracked every calorie of it. Made me realise that if I hadn't been tracking I could easily have stuffed down half as much again. No wonder I haven't lost any weight recently!

Aw, thank you! It feels like the right place. This is the most motivated I've felt in ages, so I'm on a mission to get things shifting before the mood runs out and it gets harder.

And, having read lots of posts here about not dropping calories too low, I've realised I've made that mistake many times and upped mine back up to my BMR level of 1,719 cals a day. Goodness knows I should stop trying to be in such a hurry - that's really got me a long way in the past!

Today's been pretty good. I've been tracking my intake on a certain well-known app and made sure to eat a bit more protein today. I guess I need to watch that, as having gone dairy free and egg free I need to make sure I get the good stuff from meat and fish instead. Not feeling too bad at all, apart from this blooming cold, grr. Hopefully that'll start to bog off from tomorrow, as I've got a two day residential work thing at the end of this week.

Hope you've all had good days!

Thanks Superfree Princess (SW perchance? )

Day 3 of my "I really mean it this time!" voyage. I took a sneaky peak at the scales (yes, I know I shouldn't have) and saw that two pounds have dropped off so far, hopefully for good. So that's reassuring, as I'm eating at a higher calorie level than I have on recent diets.

Today could prove to be a bit more of a challenge though. I'm working in London today - I tend to work in London on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays - so need to make sure I don't indulge in any mindless munching. Mind you, mindless munching is greatly curtailed when you know that eating anything with wheat, egg or dairy in it will make you poorly! I suppose there's a dubious bonus to having to find safe things to eat. Even more of a challenge is coming up as I've got to spend Thursday and Friday at our staff residential training facility. I'm planning on packing some safe things to eat, just in case there's nothing much there that's suitable. I know they'd prepare something specially for me but when I accepted the invite it was before I found out about the food intolerances and I don't want to make a fuss at this late stage. It's also going to be a case of "guess the calories" too - always tricky when someone else has cooked for you.

The food intolerances thing - I realise it might sound like I'm a hypochondriac, so maybe I should explain. I've had a horrible year or so from a stress point of view. Until August, I was working as a project manager in a really horrible team of people - honestly, horrible. Backstabbing colleagues, colleagues who made me feel cr@p about myself and a manager who I think (not meaning to sound big-headed) was so afraid I'd show her up that she found a way to put the boot in first, every time. I was a gibbering wreck, quite frankly. But then an old friend came to my rescue after I'd had a particularly unpleasant meeting with this manager and offered me a job in his team, saying he knew, even if she didn't, what a gem I was. Believe me, I needed to hear that! So from August, I've been working with a team of fantastic lovely people and my working life feels completely different. I'm slowly getting my confidence back.

But my body is lagging behind. Without meaning to get too graphic, everything I ate and drank went straight through me and I had horrible tummy cramps. Not sure if the stress triggered off IBS or something like it - hard to say. But after keeping a food diary, I realised that wheat was a particular problem, so stopped eating bread and pasta. That made things better but not perfect, so I took a food intolerance test. Now, I know some people think ELISA tests (that's what they're called) are bunkum, but the results showed that I was intolerant to wheat, dairy and eggs. And having cut them out, nearly all of my issues have gone away. I feel so much better, thank goodness, so it seems to be working. Apparently, I may be able to add some foods back in again after I've given my gut a chance to heal a bit.

Anyway. That's a whole lot more than I thought I'd be writing today but I guess that's the joy of having a train journey in the morning - plenty of time for reflection! Before I started working in London I had an hour's drive to get to work. So much better to be able to sit and read and post instead of getting het up about lorries going at 40 miles an hour on a road where it was nearly impossible to overtake.

Enough wittering for now. Hope everyone reading has a really good day. x

    You were up late, SFPrincess!

Another day, another train. I took another sneaky peek at the scales - must STOP that!! - and saw 16st 11lbs. Yay - 4lbs down. Hope it sticks!

The cold seems a little better this morning, so here's hoping it will clear off properly soon.

It helps when you're starting as you definitely know you're on the right way

So sorry to hear that you've had such a beastly time lately - don't worry about explaining your food intollerances to us - there's lots of people who have to/want to avoid certain things so for various reasons so we understand entirely. So glad oyur new diet is making you feel better as well as helping you lose too!

    Morning!

Well, back from the residential. Tried to make good food choices but it wasn't easy - ended up eating rice with one meal and chips with two, which wasn't ideal, but the best I could do - I didn't want to keep asking the ingredients of everything. Don't seem to have done too much damage as I've put one pound back since my lowest weight this week - and who knows, that might have happened anyway. So I'm 3 pounds down this week and I'm happy with that, considering I've probably averaged 1,900 calories a day this week (if I add on the additional calories I probably ate on Thursday and Friday). So I've not felt starved in any way and I've still lost weight - gotta be good!

I've discovered pate and a toasted gluten free roll makes a good breakfast - how decadent, eh? Very posh. And all for 247 calories.

Just need to get rid of this damned cold now.
