It depends on what your approach is to food; is it:
    Eat to ride? or
    Ride to eat?

With "eat to ride," food is just the fuel you consume so that you can partake in daily activities, including riding. You can lose weight if you can stick to this approach. If you are able to maintain or build your leg muscles while you are losing fat, you will see yourself flying up the hills as your power to weight ratio goes up. I saw a big difference with a net loss of only about 15 pounds.

With "ride to eat," your objective is to ride more so you have justifications to eat more. You're more likely to gain weight if this is your main approach, since you can eat calories faster than you can burn them.
