    Been to see my GP

I went to see my GP today, I'm fed up of being fat and need more support and accountability. He's prescribed me Orlistat, I didn't really think about anything like that but I figured it's worth a go. Bit apprehensive but hopefully it'll go well.

Good luck, hon - that sounds just like me when I first went to see my GP about my weight. It did really help having that accountability, as you say. xx

Thank you ladies, the support and reassurance means a lot to me.

My friend took Orlistat last year and told me I should always wear a pad 'just in case'. Are the accidents really that common? I knew it could happen if you've eaten too much fat in your meal, she's kind of put me off now!

That is what scared me.... If you break the rules (no more than 5g fat per 100g foods) then yes chances are you'll be visited by the tango effect but that's what the tablets are supposed to do. It's all about eating the right foods & it not happening. I was on them about 4 month & it didn't happen once but I stuck to it out of fear x

Is that guidance or a strict rule? So say I've got some less than 8% fat lean mince, would that be OK in a small portion or am I risking those effects?

I always bought 5% mince (most supermarkets do it now) but I did eat eggs & use Bisto gravy that is 8% but I used it as a strict rule apart from those as I was too scared of it happening at work

I'm gonna be blunt as it's how people were with me & I am glad they were. The tablets are meant to make you eat the right foods. We all know what we shouldn't eat if we want to lose weight & the tablets reinforce that. Yes it's restrictive but it's meant to be. You have to be dedicated if you want it to work. I don't regret it one little bit as it started me on a journey to a much happier me, the old me! If you eat fat it will find a way out. Please don't let it put you off if you're serious x

Less than 5% fat in anything though is extremely restrictive and I didn't realise just how low fat it meant you had to be when I left my GP. That rules out a lot of food that is actually quite healthy, like fish. It also means no treat ever even if you're well within calories.

GP tells you nothing I agree, they don't know enough about it, my practice nurse even admitted that. Salmon that is wild I was ok with but the farmed salmon is injected with fat to make it bigger so very high in fat & a no no & yes if by treats you mean chocolate & crisps then I'm afraid you're right. I'm a sweetie fan so I ate sweets & there are some m&s crisps that are ok. It is drastic but for me it was my last chance as I was 19 stone, I was 4 months on them which have me a 2.5 stone loss which I carried on losing when I came off. Some people risk the side effects & have treats when they want them, it was just for me in my job I couldn't risk it x

Hi Caz! Lexie's absolutely right - only you can decide how much you want to try the tablets and take on board the restrictions, which to be honest are pretty much what you'd expect on a healthy diet. I took them for two years, and have lost just over 10 stone to date, so I'm definitely in favour of them in general, from personal experience. But they only work if you eat within the guidelines, because that more or less forces you down a low calorie route. Having said that, I very much experimented and discovered for myself what the limits are (hint: the tablets do not like a massive blowout at the Pizza Hut buffet, as I discovered after an unplanned lunch out one Christmas, lol), but I always did any experimenting at a time when I knew I could stay at home for a while, like at the weekend or when on leave! But the only "Tango" incident I ever had was after the aforementioned Pizza Hut visit.

My personal take on it was to concentrate more on calories than on fat levels, which worked for me but may not for everyone, if you're particularly sensitive to the effects (my digestive system is a bit cast iron, to be honest, lol). I think what I'm trying to say is that Orlistat can be a great assistance to any healthy eating plan, but yes, it is restrictive - however, aren't all "diets"? Good luck whatever you decide to do. xx

I'm going to give them a go, I might as well and like you said I'll just do any experimenting with levels of fat I can take without side effects whilst I'm at home to be able to deal with any possible side effects! I'm calorie counting anyway, it just limits my choices more. I walked around Tesco whilst waiting for my prescription and there are actually more low fat cuts of meat available than I thought.
