Hmmm, personally I would probably add it as I am not going to be too strict on myself whilst doing 5:2 non fast days. That doesn't mean I'm going to be eating cake and huge chinks of cheese every day but if I do fancy something I'd have avoided on ww due to pp value I'll probably have it in moderation. I'll see how it goes the first couple of weeks and if it's not having any results, then I'll start being a bit stricter on non- fast days. However, it's up conpletely up to you.

I did decide to add a little bit. Although only about 60g for 2/3 portions. I agree with your approach of not trying to be *too* strict on the non-fasting days at least to begin with, as that rather seems to defeat the point. It seems a lot of effect comes from the contrast in calories so it probably doesn't really pay to be too strict.

    Definitely add the paneer! Yum!

As you say isn't the big calorific difference on the up and down days part of what makes it effective?

So trying to incorporate things like paneer, dried fruit, nuts, seeds etc that you might grudge using points on is exactly what you should try to do. X

Hi Hells, I am doing a slightly wimpier version of JUDDD with only two down days. Been intrigued by the reported health benefits for a while and as the scales are still being very frustrating thought I would give it a go for a couple of weeks. We shall see.

Laura - I guess adding the paneer is a good way of adding extra calories in a fairly nutritional way. Its really odd trying to think of adding calories to meals rather than taking them away. I guess there will have to be a lot of trial and error of what works and what doesn't.

Despite having the option to have anything I wanted to eat today I started the day with my usual oatbran cooked with cinnamon, frozen raspberries and 1 tsp of golden syrup! And have paneer and veg curry with brown rice for lunch. Not exactly a substantial change in my eating yet then. But out for a meal tonight as have been with OH for 13 years today. This makes me feel rather old...

I shall watch your results with interest. I have been wondering about the JUDDD as a kickstart for the year, but I think I said in an earlier post that in the past the beginning of the year is when I have always tended to switch diets to 'the one that will work' this time, so the awareness of that is holding me back a bit. I have just downloaded the kindle version of the JUDDD ('ADD - Alternate Day Diet,' by the same author - think it is the same one) so I'll have a really good read through while I'm off work (again!) I like the sound of the wimpier version 5:2 even more though!

A few years ago I tried the Paul McKenna approach and it did work. One of the most amazing things was after years of 'always' dieting - mentally anyway, if not actually - was that 'wow' factor of 'I want that, and I can have it!) I did lose weight on it but the problem was that it didn't fit into the structure of my days very well - work tends to mean a breakfast/lunch/dinner approach so just stopping for a knickerbocker glory in the middle of the afternoon wasn't an option!

Haven't read through properly but will dip in and out as I find time to read through it all. Are you doing intermittent fasting now? OH and I watched that documentary and he's been loosely following the 5:2 plan and has lost his little pauch lol. He also started working out a few months ago. I have a new hotter husband now lol!

Definitely interested in your progress, I do think it makes perfect sense, I find some days I could quite happily stick to 500 cals and others I "need" much more and to me it does feel "natural" to semi-fast..

Thanks guys! I feel rather popular today - lots of diary traffic

Moonwatcher - work would definitely be better if it did allow for a ice cream in the afternoon! I know what you mean about not wanting to swap diets. I always prided myself on not being someone that swapped between plans. I had pretty much 2 years on SW and then swapped to WW last April but it clearly isn't working for me so thought I would give this a go. I will keep you updated on how that works out. Are you off work again? Oh dear! Is it the cough or the ankle??

Sparkle - definitely difficult to get my head around different food choices. I feel like I have EATEN THE WORLD today, and that's before my meal out. But in reality I had a slightly higher calorie yogurt and a tiny piece of cake at work. Not going to exactly break the calorie bank is it?? How long did it take to get your head around the up days?

Honey - fabulous to "see" you! Are you over this side because you decided to go for weight watchers? Its good to hear that your OH has had good success with the 5:2 diet - and that you get you enjoy a hotter hubbie too My OH is pretty sickening when it comes to his weight and physique - he decided after christmas that he was wobblier than he had been and put on 5lbs. So all he did was only eat cake or chocolate a maximum of twice a day rather than 3 and got some bigger weights and in a week it was gone and his biceps had grown to the point where his work shirts were uncomfortable. Men!!! It's just not fair sometimes...

Hells - I also felt that it somehow felt like a more "natural" instinctive way of eating. I guess its a slightly more extreme version of how naturally slim people eat - they will eat lots at times but then will "forget" to eat for most of a day. Here's hoping it doesn't feel *too* unnatural. First fast day tomorrow and I have to say I am a little bit scared!

Food for last few days; (will upload photos later in the week as off out in a bit)

    Sunday:
Slightly hungover breakfast: 1 warm sausage roll. Ooops!
    Lunch: A banana
    ww bagel with light philadelphia
small "taster" portion of veg curry with onions, mushrooms, spinach and peppers and two tiny pieces of paneer
Dinner: Venison and red wine sausages (only 84 calories each so definitely doable on WW), roast potatoes (made with 1tsp of duck fat between the two of us), leeks, carrots and savoy cabbage with bacon.
    Snack: 1 vegi sausage

Actually I thought I ate more than that yesterday but I did write everything done so maybe its just that more indulgent things felt more satisfying...

    Monday:
Breakfast: oatbran with kara milk, frozen raspberries and 1 tsp golden syrup
Snack: Banana, few pieces fresh pineapple
Lunch: Brown rice, veg curry I made yesterday
Asda "custard" layered gooseberry yogurt. This was SO much nicer than diet yogurts and "only" 114 calories. Worth the difference
1 inch square piece of date and walnut slice that a colleague brought into work.
Dinner: Mutiple courses to be confirmed!

It was really wierd to be asked if I wanted a bit of the date and walnut slice and make the decision on whether I actually wanted it rather than thought I should or shouldn't have it. I wasn't hungry after my lunch so just had 1/2 a piece. I am currently undecided whether to go to the gym before work tomorrow or not. Its my first fast day and if I go to the gym that will mean getting up at 5am which will make my first fast day rather a long day! But I may only get to the gym twice over the next week due to other stuff I have going on if I don't go tomorrow morning... Hmmmm. Decisions, decisions.

Probably won't have time to catch up with everyone tonight but will have a read up tomorrow

Food looks very tasty as usual Atomic. I know what you mean about the yogurt - I either have 'real' yogurt (greek or full fat) and count it, or I just don't have yogurt!

I'm off with the cough again - sudden relapse on Sunday. The Doctor thinks it has been whooping cough all along and now I have picked up a cold on top of it which sets off the whooping cough symptoms again! Still every cloud and all that - I will have time over the next few days to digest the JUDDD book and the 5:2 book.

I really had to think hard before deciding to do the 5:2 fast diet. I've felt like a right diet hopper lately, from ww to SW back to ww in the last few months, but I am going to give this a good go. Ww did really work for me for a while bit halfway through last year I really struggled with counting. I couldn't get my head into SW and back at ww I would stick to it for a couple of weeks then fall back into bad habits. I'm hoping this can help me kick some of my food bad habits.

You food looks great. I've not seen your WI results. How have they been?

The hungover breakfast sounds good. I love a good sausage bap with sauce. They only taste good up North aswell! Southern sausage baps just don't cut it!

I know how you feel. I switched to SW and back again after a week. Now I am looking at other things. I think I want instant results and it will never happen. At the end of the day all diets work as we reduce out calorie intake. No matter which way we do it.
