Best milk substitute?

UNLEASHING THE BEAST!
I'm talking about milky drink substitute for coffee etc

Would I be best using dilute coconut milk?

I was using hazlenut milk but have found I've been more hungry after my latte - SUGAR in the ingredients. My own fault for not checking.

So what's your favourite milk substitute?

I love the KoKo coconut milk too, its not overpowering and its not watery

Thanks guys - I'll keep an eye out for it.

I'm trying to drink more tea and water (I used to drink gallons of tea and water years ago, wonder why I stopped) but I will find it hard to get through nightshift without some coffee, and I can only take my coffee black when it has sweetner in.

I'm going to try cold brewing coffee in a wee while and see how it goes and if it makes a difference to the taste and I could cut out milk completely.

I'm struggling with this too. I drink tea all day and cannot take it without milk - although I don't take sugar. I just won't manage this diet if I can't have my tea :(

A little splash of cream is nice in coffee and goes a long way.

As far as milk in tea, try the different alternative milks like coconut and almond to see what you personally enjoy. If at the end of the day you must have cow's milk in your tea I don't think that's a reason to throw all the other principles of paleo away; it's not really that kind of 'diet'. You will still get the benefits of not eating grains, not eating processed junk, etc. Everyone has to do what works for them. :)

Oh thankugod. LOL I was getting so stressed out by that! xxx ty :D

I think your profile says it well, 'paleo-ish' - fortunately there are no paleo police. :D If having a little milk in tea keeps you getting all the benefits of the other principles of paleo then it's not the worst thing ever. :) And you may find if you stick with it that your tastes change. :)

I managed to swap from dairy in my tea to unsweetened soya milk no problem, in fact prefer the soya milk - however the swap from that to even the KoKo is not going that well, I really don't like the consistency of my tea with the coconut in. I'm still doing it though as I want to see if my tastes can change (years ago I thought I MUST have 2tsps sugar in each cup of tea!). However, I ask for soya if I'm out and if I really felt desperate for a cuppa sans coconut then I'll have one. Luckily, I always have my coffee black :D.

I like my tea and I like a lot of milk in it - but I want to lose weight too  Today I got Almond milk, unsweetened Soya milk, and KoKo. Will try them all this week.

So what's your verdict? I've not tried almond milk at all yet as I can only find really expensive brands locally :(.

I usually buy diamond blue almond milk it's usually £1 in tesco or I get the Alpro if on offer (make sure u check as they do a sweetened version) x

The almond is thin and watery, an odd colour, but ok, the KoKo is creamier and ok although you can taste the coconut and I don't like coconut. But I bought them and I'll get used to them. Sigh. :( Eventually.
The KoKo was £2 for 2 in Tescos, think the almond was £1.69 -ish. OH takes sweetener in his tea and says that disguises the taste a wee bit more, I don't. Not tried the soya yet.

Ok sorry got another Q! I use myfitnesspal to work out my carbs. It's telling me that KoKo has exactly the same carbs as ordinary milk - is this true?

Koko is sweetened, I think (?), so this would make sense. Carbs isn't the reason most paleo/primal people avoid milk, though. :)

AHH that explains a lot.. ty. Why don't you take milk then? (don't think its sweetened, as I don't take sugar in tea and it tastes ok, I hate sweet tea).

I just checked and Koko has grape juice concentrate in it which is a sweetener. Cow's milk has a slightly sweet taste too which is probably why your tea doesn't taste sweeter than normal. :)

Here's some info about milk: http://paleohacks.com/questions/43010/whats-the-problem-with-milk-and-dairy

Everyone is different so we all have to figure out what works for us. :)

Silly question, but does the KoKo coconut milk taste anything like the coconut milk/cream you can buy in tins?

IMO it has a much milder coconut flavour and is sweeter. It's also thin, ie closer to the consistency of dairy milk. :)
