    Help !

    I everyone , I'm new to this site so I apologies now if this has been asked before.
    I have just been diagnosed with PCOS and a reading of 10.9 on my glucose tolerance test . Seems I now have impaired glucose tolerance as well as PCOS. I have tried low carb and no carb diets but they don't seem to work . The last one I tried was Dukan for 3 months and lost 0.5 kg . My doctor tells me I can control it all if I lose weight . I'm on no medication as until I have diabetes it's not prescribed. I'm ok with this but really need advice on the best meal plan I should be using . What am I doing wrong ???

    Hi I have pcos since I was 18 I'm 30 now.. Lost most of my weight on the south beach diet worked a treat . Dukan worked for a couple of weeks like all other diets I have tried. One that is working now is a meal replacement diet called slim and save. Losing weight has normalised my hormones and cycle although I don't ovulate yet I still have a fair bit to lose. It is well documented that women with pcos cannot burn carbs like ladies without pcos
    Starting CD - 30/12/11 - 18st 3lb

    Weeks 1-12 = 50.6lb Loss (24.5Inches) - 14st 8.4lb

    Week 13 - 3.6lb gain (week in Turkey off plan) 14st 12lb
    Week 14 - 4.8lb loss 14st 7.2lb
    Week 15 - 3lb loss 14st 4.2lb
    Week 16 - 2lb loss 14st 2.2lb
    Week 17 - 1lb gain 14st 3.2lb

    Thanks , it's driving me nuts. 6 weeks of only protein and only half a kilo lost . I was devastated . Will give the south beach diet ago and see if that makes a difference .

    Home | Verity - PCOS Charity is a great place to start - I have found them very helpful over the years.

    pcos is usually related to insulin/glucose, and you're doctor's right - it can be alleviated with the combination of not being overweight, a healthy diet, and plenty of activity - but as you and I have both experienced, it's harder for us to loose weight in the first place - but it IS possible

    ..it's not quite true about the medication thing though.. GPs often prescribe metformin for pcos which is usually for diabetes.. they also prescribe specific types of the pill.. if you're not trying to conceive.. and if you are trying they might give you extra support.. but physical activity and a healthy diet is going to be important to fertility.. it's ok, robyn.. there's plenty of support along the way and you can find solutions to most aspects of pcos..

    The best recommended diet for pcos is low GI/GL. (there are some good books - just google pcos diet or low GL diet). This is medically proven to reduce/remove pcos symptoms.. personally, I think this works really well, but if you have a lot to loose you might want to do something else first... the Boots diet from Boots chemists is based on low GI so that might be a good one for you. I did the cambridge diet which is a bit extreme but worked for me.. very low calorie diets aren't very healthy and there is a big risk of putting all the weight back on afterwards if you don't have enough maintenance support once you've reached target.. the maintenance needs to be a bigger part than the loosing weight part really.

    sooo... there are a few thoughts.. check out verity for more support/advice, and good luck with it all... you're not alone with this stuff.. chances are, if you're experiencing a problem, someone else arond here has experienced similar and can be there for you..

    Thanks so much for your advice. I went out today and brought a few books on low carb/ low GI. Based on what I'm reading I think the main problem was not eating enough ! This created extreme fatigue which meant I never had the energy to exercise as much as I need to. I'm also one of those people that never seem to lose small amount consistently, it all seems to build up then out of the blue comes off. Unfortunately I also suffer from extreme lack of patients !

    Fortunately I don't have the need to conceive all my babies are now adults. My doctor wants me to lose 8 kg in the next two months which will bring me down to 72 kg . So, my plan of attack from tomorrow is ,

    Breakfast. 1 poached egg on 1 slice of multi grain bread.
    Snack. 1 apple
    Lunch. 1 protein shake (17 grams carb/ 26 grams protein ) and a garden salad
    Snack. Small hand full almonds
    Dinner. Steak and steamed veg

    Lots and lots of water .

    Finger crossed it works.
