22 with PCOS + VLCD

Hey girlies, I thought I would introduce myself.

I'm a 22 yo student, and i was diagnosed with PCOS when i was 17, with a blood test and an internal ultra sound.
I had actually diagnosed myself, and asked my doctor to check it out. Once it was confirmed...nothing. I haven't had any follow up appointment with a doctor who could tell me more about it, what i should look out for or expect.
I learnt through the internet. The doctor who carried out the ultrasound was pretty dismissive.

I consider myself lucky, that my symptoms are not worse, I suffer mainly with weight gain, and difficultly keeping off any weight I lose, as well as some mild hirsutism (moustache, stubborn and quick growing body hair, fairly hair arms etc) and irregular periods.

I have tried weight watchers in the past, and last summer I lost a stone.

This summer, I'm trying the cambridge diet. 2 weeks completed, and I've lost 1/2 a stone :). It will be interesting to see if losing a lot of weight will effect my excess hair, I hope so!

It would be nice to get to know people, and learn more about peoples PCOS experiences.

Big :heartpump: to all of you x

hiya, i was diagnosed at the age of 16 and have been TTC for 2 years. im at the stage where im really frustrated again, im always thinking why me why me?!?! best of luck and hope you get the results you want xx

Hi, I'm 23 and have PCOS. I've been doing Weight Watchers for a year now and have lost 4stone 10lb but can't seem to lose anymore! Considering Exante

I'm 26, tried them all, CD, exante but I find I do lose the weight slowly (goes on in no time if I'm not cautious)
I've been on a juiceplus diet which replaces meals in the same way but as its fruit I'm finding it easier to stick to! Have any of you considered other options?

Im currently doing slimming world and it seems to be really working for me x

Hi I'm 21, and was diagnosed with pcos when I was 16. I done slimming world for 2nd time at start of year and lost 21lb. It works for me, but I find it difficult to find time to make meals from scratch. Going to try lipotrim after I get off my jollies.

I'm 24 was diagnosed officially when i was 21 but diagnosed myself when i was 16 was just to scared to go doctors with it, even though i knew i had it. I do Slimming World and taken me a few years (though i was on and off the diet for a while) to lose 4 stone 8 lb. Apart from mild hirsutism (lovely little beard going on most of the time) and a total lack of periods, i'm all good lol

Hi ladies! I'm a newbie to this! I'm 25 and I have PCOS, I've been TTC for years and nothing has happened. I was on clomid (50mg) a few weeks ago, which didn't work at all. I got 2 scans and my blood test today results and told it didn't have an impact at all, they do plan to increase my dosage but told me to try loose weight so last week joined slimming world! Had my first weigh in today and lost 2.5lbs, I'd of liked more but I'm pleased with my start xxx

Hi girls im 23 been trying for a baby with my partner for a year and a half now. have pcos and have had not one period in 5 years im doing a vlcd does anyone know if this helps with pcos. So low about not being able to have a baby. xxx

Heyyyyy, im 24 and was diagnosed with PCOS about 3 years ago.. as i suffered from abdominal pains etc therefore they did an ultrasound and a vaginal camera thing... and found i had PCOS... although they didnt state how bad my cysts were and didnt really discuss much about it like most of you I have had to do my own research. I am now doing the atkins diet and have found it to be very helpful... my partner is working away and is coming back in 3 weeks and we have discussed TTC this is my main motivation for losing weight and so far I have lost 10lbs in under a month therefore I am doing really well and I hope to continue this until he is home. I am also taking vitamins, folic acid and iron tablets. Apparently with PCOS if you lose 10% of your body weight it increases your chances of fertility by 40% not sure how true this is... but im going on this and this is my motivation to lose weight :D
Does anybody have any other advice? x

Hi Girls last year I done Lighter Life and lost around 6 stone.... body hair improved massively, I also had the confidence to have laser hair removal somewhere which was amazing... I have since gained weight and the hair is back but definitely not to the extent it was before! I'm now on day 2 or Exante (so much cheaper than Lighter Life) and fingers crossed it goes again :)

Try swapping to slimming world for a while, see if that kick starts your losses again.

Hi girls. I'm 26 and found out I had pcos about 5 years ago when I started gaining more weight. Since then I've been on and off different metformins, read books, fell off a bunch of diets, not had a great deal of help medically (is there much else they can do? It's down to me to try to control it is what I've been told and makes sense) been put on a contraceptive to sort my hormones and gained about five and a half stone along the way. My main issue is my hair. I am already naturally dark and have convinced myself I'm the only one this hairy but it seems that there are others! I have started Cambridge diet and feeling positive. Will my excess hair go down with my weight loss because it has gone up with the weight gain! OR am I just turning into a man!?!? :p

good luck

I too have PCOS - really struggle to lose weight - Lighterlife total abstinence seems to be the only thing that works.

Re the PCOS a low carb diet is supposed to help. Also - have recently been reading that vitamin D3 supplements can help. Ordered some Solgar ones from Amazon - wish me luck!

My doctor recommended low carbs and before I dieted I cut down and lost weight naturally by doing that. Then Christmas came and I am a bit of a potato fiend so I fell off. But you are right about the carbs.
Good luck

I haven't been diagnosed officially with PCOS but my mum has it and I exhibit a lot of the same symptoms.

I have found success through calorie counting, low gi diet and am now looking at mainly shakes.

I too have found that eliminating or limiting carbs helps a lot with my weight loss.

x

I have PCOS too. Losing weight is definitely improving the symptoms. This is the first time I've enjoyed a diet just counting the calories and not eating anything red on the traffic light scheme.

Hi I'm 22 w/ PCOS, diagnosed when I was 19. I suffer from excess hair growth on my chin (got the dark spots and bumps to prove it), irregular periods and weight gain w/ difficultly trying to lose weight.

Hi all,

I am 32 and was diagnosed with PCOS at 15.

I have excess hair, weight around my stomach and small boobs.

I had irregular periods up until I lost 2 stone on the Cambridge diet in 2009. I fell off the plan after my wedding in Oct 2009 but then went on to a low GI diet in January 2010.

Whilst on low GI / low carb diet I fell pregnant with my daughter February 2010 and gave birth November 2010.

I put on two stone after her birth in a year and went back to Cambridge where I lost 1 stone.

I have been TTC our 2nd child since last September. We fell pregnant again in May but sadly miscarried in July due to a blighted ovum.

Back on track with both TTC and weight loss. I'm doing 3 shakes a day and a low carb meal using Slim & Save.

I was diagnosed at 18 but was healthy weight at that stage, so must be a bit difficult dealing with the weight aspect when young, but don't worry is doable. I am now in 30s and struggling with the weight after 2 babies and gestational diabetes in both pregnancies. I have always found low carb diet to work for me with recent weight loss i think thats because of the insulin reisistant. I am also waiting on my vlcd pack as I need to get to this pre pregnancy weight soon.
