I just read an article written by an american shelter manager that described what it was like for the animals they have, he said it takes 72 hours before they decide to put an animal down. Most in his shelter are purebred from people with stupid excuses like 'we didn't think it'd get so big'.

If your thinking of your next animal, no matter what animal, go to your local shelter first!

He descibed how animals reacted when they went into 'the room' to be put to sleep, alot don't go peacefully and fit, or jerk and end up ripping the needle out. 1000s are killed every month and turned into animal feed or fertiler for your garden. X
People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas.

If hunger is not the problem, then eating is not the solution.

Or for those buying remember if you give it up it will most likely be put down so think first before buying your designer dog that you have no time to walk!! All dogs need at least 1hr a day exercise if you don't have that don't get one- simple.

To those that get dogs- train them that way they are easier to care for. It's simple you get out what you put in if you are to lazy to train them don't get one!

If you plan to rescue from a shelter be aware that the dog will have issue and will need a lot of work don't go into it lightly- the dog deserves better...

Adopt Guinea Pigs! www.theguineapigforum.co.uk - loads of rescures out their bursting with pigs that are usually from disgusting breeders who treat them like livestock or pet shop pets bought and not wanted (children get bored)<-- that makes me angry. Don't give into your child if you know they get bored with things easily... People please! right little rant thread :P

Thank you so much for making this thread hun.
I help run a small animal rescue so know just how many animals get abandoned and alot of the time pts, people breed for no reason then cant sell the animals so dump them on a rescue.
We get all sorts of pathetic excuses for people giving up these little lives. They treat them like they're just a piece of clothing they're taking back to a shop
It makes me so upset to know that thousands of animals die every year because there is just not enough rescue space for them all.

Dont breed or buy when rescue animals die

I currently have 4 rabbits, 3 hamsters, 4 gerbils and 7 mice and they are ALL rescues.

    Re-start here we come. 18/3/2012

Someone was offering hamsters on freecycle and said perfectly fine for breeders... I thought, you idiot. Do you know that's a life of cruelty for an animal so small? They also had the nerve to say they rescured them. X

most of my cats have been adopted ^_^

toby and gizmo were adopted. toby from being a kitten and gizmo from a cats rescue. he'd been in care for over a year, people came to view him but left him behind hes a lovely little cat though, and me and my mum fell in love with him soon as we saw him! had him 2 1/2 years, hes 4 years old now. such a loving little boy, very soft and cuddly.

amber was also adopted. sadly she wasnt very well and died, had her about 6 years befor she had to be put down

crystal was my neighbours cat that used to always be at our house, the neighbour brought round her cat tray and food for us and say we may aswell keep her! she went missing sadly, never know what happened to her. hope she found a new home with a loving family

We also adopted two pets - One is a Chinchilla (she got left behind by a Chinese student...guess he didn't realize they can live up to 20 years and he can't take it back to China...or he didn't think at all)...we also wanted a cat and after looking for a kitten on gumtree (yeah, naive little me..) I got contacted by a woman who strongly recommended to go for a rescue cat...first I wanted to go for a kitten because of the Chinchilla (we let her run outside the cage) so she can get used to it..big cats might be more aggressive..But turned out I didn't really have to worry about that..we adopted a 2 year old cat from the cat rescue and she is georgou.. I woudn't swap her for a million kittens!!! And she is actually more scared of the Chinchilla than the other way round ..hehe...See picture below :-)
