Xanthan/Guar Gum - Shake Thickener?

Hi guys,
I have just transferred over from Cambridge :D I couldnt get along with sole source on only 3 packs a day. I needed to do four but its just far too expensive. Im on day one of slim and save and day 15 of a VLCD. I gave my scales away to my friend to stop me daily weighing. Now I havent got a consultant I think I will have to make a weekly journey to boots. I am around 15st and a size 20/22 i am only 5ft1 so have at least 6 stone to lose before I resemble a shape other than round :p

Since Cambridge was mainly just shakes I got experimenting with a powder called Xanthan Gum. Its basically a thickener used in things like gluten free breads, gravies and sauces. Per tablespoon it has about 30 cals and 8g of fibre. There is NO sugar carbs in it at all so it DOESNT affect ketosis.
In cold cambridge shakes it is somewhat slimy in texture but in their shakes hot its smooth and creamy. Its absolutely gorgeous in their chocolate hot. I tried it today with SnSs Hazelnut. WOW! its sooo delicious! I made it with about half a teaspoon and 150mls of water and loads of ice. It made this almost whippy style hazelnut icecream. I really do recommend it for ppl wanting to thicken shakes.

Both CWP and SnS sell fibre supplements why bother with those when you can just add a thickener to a shake and turn it into icecream?

let me know if anyones gave it ago? its sooo good and it keeps me full all day. Most shakes need no more than half a teaspoon if you use too much you will end up with homemade slime =/ I very much doubt you would get a good mix shaking by hand its better for those using a blender to mix their shakes

Sounds interesting, however i always make ice shakes and they thicken up just like maccys shakes without adding anything-just the sachet, a bit of water and the ice! It might work for something like the mac n cheese tho maybe?

Might give that a go, the hazelnut Mr Whippy sounds nice!

I thought about experimenting with the S&S mousse powder too, I curremtly mix half a dry pack with 1 tsp of mousse mix (which is just gelatine) and then pour that into a little pot and pop in the fridge for 10 mins. Whilst it's setting I don't bother cleaning the blender out and put the other half a scahet in and mix a normal shake but I do find the S&S shakes a bit runny so I wonder whether 1/4 of a teaspoon of the mousse powder (mixed in dry) would thicken them up a little.

xanthan or guar gum is alot cheaper than sns mousse mix and as i mentioned its pure fibre. A whole tablespoon of xantham is only 30 cals and you only need is half a teaspoon per shake. So that affectively means you could make 6 a day for 30 cals :)

nver heard of carabel?

Hi I no it was a while ago but I have just read your thread regarding guar gum for thickening shakes. Can you let me no where you get it from as I would like to give it a try
