Starting SNS at a healthy weight

Anyone got any experience of starting SNS at a healthy, lower weight? I am 5'9 and currently hovering around 10 stone 10 ish, which is healthy for me. I would like to get down to 10 stone however and as I'm losing patience/willpower on Weight Watchers/Slimming World, I'm debating doing SNS to lose the last part. Hopefully it wouldn't take too long, and I have done Slimfast in the past and actually find these things easier to stick to…

Anyway, is it advisable to do this? And would I be able to manage on 3 packs a day, as that's the cheapest? Any advice appreciated :)

Hi,

Medically it is advised you are above a certain BMI to do a VLCD but I don't see the sense in that because anyone can walk into a supermarket and buy Slimfast so in my opinion it wouldn't do any harm and you'd loss a stone in a month so you wouldn't be on it long anyway.

You can do 3 packs but only if your planning on having a low carb meal at night consisting of 100g protein and 200g veg, otherwise you would need to do 4 packs a day x

Hey, thanks for replying :) yeah also I was thinking, people who start at a BMI of 25 obviously won't be at that BMI for very long so it must be ok to start at a lower BMI? Otherwise they would make people stop once they're a 'healthy' weight but I see lots of people carrying on to their desired BMI. I really want to give it a go but the cost is an issue atm, will probably start it when my next student loan comes in :) thanks for the help! xx

Bought the starter pack, not sure it's wise to be starting before Christmas but can give it a go! Shouldn't really have bought it but I expect I'll get some Christmas money :)

Fruit and Coffee,

I won't lie to you if you have any nights out or meals with friends planned over Xmas I'd wait and start afterwards because until you go into ketosis you'll have a pretty rotten first few days and any time you take a day off you need to start all over so I'd have a think about it?

Especially because of the price it's not cheap so unless you know you can resist temptation I'd just set a start date for after Xmas.

If you read all he Xmas threads you'll see that most of the girls are taking a break over Xmas, a few of the hardcore dieters are only taking a day or two but most people are taking a week or two off because we all know how hard it would be to stay on plan x

I don't have any nights or meals out planned :( I'm a third year law student with 25,000 words to write over three weeks :wave_cry: I think I'll give the first week of it a go when it arrives, even just to get down a bit before Christmas day and see which products I like. Then I can start properly again after :) xx

I am a normal isn BMI for my 5ft 2" frame around 8st 13 (re-started 9st 2-3) and I have re-started SnS. I have recommenced my PT sessions after a 6 week break due to injury and I am planning to SnS to 24 December and be mindful on 24 and Christmas Day and the following week and will take a break for NY Eve. I have 3 packs and a meal or 4 packs and a whey protein on days I do a PT session. So provided doing SnS fits in with your festive season schedule it may be fine to stick with it or do reconsider starting in new year so that you get fully into ketosis? It is whatever works for you. I think the weight loss even on healthy BMI (after a break) is initially similar to that of starting at a higher BMI or certainly what I have experienced but then again I end up caving in by day 13 or 14! It is the last 10lbs that has been a killer for me and of course diet fatigue!

If you hare a dissertation to do and will be working around the clock and in your pi's most of the time then I couldn't think of a better time to start SnS! Even if you take Christmas day off! If anything it will at least stop you gaining more? Sigh! I remember my law student days! Wish I were there again! What is your dissertation on?

Hey :) yeah I don't have masses to lose but I think I will use this first week as more of a tester, get to grips with the plan and see what products I like before I re-order :) my problem is that I eat healthily now anyway so maintaining is not an issue, but I want to get down a bit more! I've been at home for a few days eating badly so probably have some water weight to go as well.

Where did you study? I'm actually looking forward to finishing now, this year is awful :( I'm writing it on organ donation, in Wales recently they've introduced an opt-out scheme meaning everyone is automatically placed on the register without having to sign up. If you want to you can opt out of it, but I'm writing about the implications this has for individual autonomy, the extent to which the state controls us and our bodies, and basically saying it's wrong for them to impose this on us when they should be obtaining our consent first. Very interesting but quite draining and complicated :'( xx

I don't think it is particularly unhealthy to do this at a normal BMI but my Lighter Life counsellor said she definitely noticed that people had less success lower down the BMI. She put it down to the fact that it really is hardcore and you needed a certain amount of desperation to make it work. If you are a regular weight and looking and feeling reasonably OK you can talk yourself our of it - lots of mind games initially. That doesn't mean it isn't possible and it might just be the point of difference that loses the last bit for you. Good luck and there is lots of support here when you do decide.

Yeah good luck, you'll get loads of support on here whenever you need it, just let us know when your reaching for that slice of toast and we'll talk you out of it!! lol :) x

That's sounds like a very interesting topic to do a dissertation on. Not too dissimilar to consent to share data under and opt ins and out relating to the Data Protection Act and how companies use people's data with using certain opt in/out clauses within the terms and conditions of their product literature. (I'm a lawyer and I did my degree years ago in Newcastle, so long ago I can't even remember whether I did a dissertation or not!??! Scary as seem to be losing my memory now I am closer to 50 than 40!) Just as well I am on a career break and not practising for now!

On the vld front I agree that losses may be a little slower though having said that I don't think I have ever done SnS more than 12-14 days trying to get rid of the same 10lbs so can't honest say first hand! Also technically my healthy BMI is lower than 25 as I am Indian and Asians BMI's are set lower than Caucasians for some scientific reason that now escapes me! Not fair is it means I am closer to overweight that normal weight nearer the 9st mark!

Have a good day and hope you crack on with the dissertation. I always found that getting going on work was the hardest thing and once you get to the stage you edit you suddenly reason you could do with more time and make it even better!

Thanks for all the replies ladies! Does anyone know if it works if you have say 2 packs a day and a reasonable healthy dinner? I'm finding myself really weak/too tired to concentrate doing 4 packs a day, for the past few days I've been having 2 shakes in the day and then a normal healthy dinner and it seems to be working ok. I'm not in a massive rush to lose my last stone anyway so is this ok? I guess I won't be in ketosis but as a means of calorie restricting I find the shakes fill me up enough through the day, but then in the evening I am really hungry so have a normal meal e.g. chicken with salad and potatoes or something.

Have you though about just doing the lifestyle plan?

That way you could have 3 shakes then a low carb meal at night like a ham or egg salad, chicken and veg or a mushroom omelette etc etc?

Just a thought as following lifestyle you'd be in ketosis so the weight loss is the same as simplicity but your getting a more filling meal at night x

Ideally you shouldn't have less than the recommended packs as they contain your RDA of nutrients and vitamins so if you aren't getting those then you may start doing damage to your organs as your body will start to go into starvation mode and take the things it needs from elsewhere.

I would think it depends on the calorific and nutritional content of you meal in the evening as to whether two packs and the meal lacked daily nutritional requirements. Furthermore I disagree one would go into starvation mode. Many of these vlcd attract this tag of them sending one into starvation mode when in reality it takes a good number of weeks (depending what weight one is in the first place) for one to actually get into starvation mode. I believe though low calories or vlc can mess with ones metabolism.

the three packs and a meal is probably better way to go or even four packs and a protein meal. I have the latter on days I have my PT sessions and feel ok.
