How to Slim Fast

Here's a little information about Slim Fast for any newbies, anyone can feel free to add anything I might have missed.

Slim Fast is a partial food replacement programme you have 2 Slim Fast meal replacements and a 600 Calorie evening meal 800 Calories for men, you can also have up to 3 100 calorie snacks. Slim Fast offer branded version 100 calorie snacks but you're not limited to these you can have any snack that equals 100 calories or less. These extra calories are good for getting in 1 of your 5 a day with a piece of fruit for example.

Slim Fast meal replacements are available in many different ways, 1. Powder 2. Ready made bottled milkshakes 3. Ready made bottled smoothies 4. Meal bars and 5. Soup, and are available in a range of flavours.

Powder: Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry and Banana
Ready made shakes: Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Banana and Cafe Classic
Ready made smoothies: Fruits of the Forest, Peach and Mango and Raspberry
Meal Bars: Chocolate Crunch, Fruits of the Forest and Yogurt and Muesli
Soups: Chicken and Mushroom and Mediterranean Tomato and Bean.

There is also a Slim Fast Optima range which seems to only be available in America however there are people selling it on Ebay at a reasonable price there are a lot more flavours in the Optima range and they sound nicer too. (Maybe we need to petition Slim Fast to bring it to the UK )

There are other brands that work exactly the same as Slim Fast Tesco have a Light Choices version, which is considerably cheaper.

What you may need: If you are going to have the ready made bottles then you need a recycling bin! that's a lot of plastic bottles you'll be throwing away. If you are going to use the powder then you are going to need a blender or a milkshake shaker the tupperware cups with screw lids work fine too. If you chose to cook your own evening meal then you are going to need a set of kitchen scales a notepad and pen so you can weigh and calorie count your meal I personally choose the easy option of healthy ready meals like Light Choices, Healthy Living and Weight Watchers.

What kind of losses you can expect from Slim Fast. Most report losses of between 1 and 3 pounds per week but what you will lose depends on your body. It all comes down to calories, Slim Fast is around 1,300 calories per day. Visit Calorie Control Council | Healthy Weight Calculator enter your information and it will tell you how many calories you need per day to maintain your weight. 3,500 calories = 1lb in weight. so if you consume 500 calories a day less than you burn you should lose 1lb in a week, for example if someone has 2,300 calories per day to maintain and does the Slim Fast diet which is 1,300 calories they would have a deficit of 1,000 calories per day which should result in a 2lb weight loss a week.

It is not recommended to eat less than 1,200 calories per day unless you are doing a monitored TFR (total food replacement) like The Cambridge Diet, Lighter Life, Lipotrim etc.

If you're dieting you want to drink as much water as possible but be careful drinking too much water in one go can be dangerous drink small amounts throughout the day.

Thanks for that "Lisa",great help to us newbees!

Few questions if you don't mind....

How long have you been doing SF ?
Is Tesco version as good?
Do you have any alcohol( I would like to have a few glasses of wine/bottles of beer at weekends but don't want to undo eveything) ?

I've done Slim Fast on and off since March more off than on

Tesco version is just as good though it's sweeter than Slim Fast

I'm sure wine or beer could be added into a Slim Fast diet I personally don't drink but if you can find out the calories, just work it in, so if you want to have a drink save up your 300 calories from snacks to use on alcohol. Example a 175ml glass of Lambrini Bianco has 96 calories try Calories in Wine that seems a good place to find out, there are links for different alcohols at the bottom of the page.

Weight loss depends on your own body, the average loss on SF seems to be 1 to 3lb's per week if you can lose 2lb per week you should lose 5 stone in 32 weeks which is roughly 8 months.
