How to Slim Fast

Here's a little information about Slim Fast for anyone who's new to it. Please feel free to add anything I might have missed.

Slim Fast is a partial food replacement programme. You'll have 2 Slim Fast meal replacements and a 600 calorie evening meal (800 Calories for men.) You'll also have up to 3 100 calorie snacks. Slim Fast have their own brand of 100 calorie snacks but you're not limited to these. You can eat anything that equals 100 calories or less, for example a medium apple is around 55 calories an orange is around 60 calories and bananas around 100 calories to name but a few. This is a good way to get in some of your 5 a day.

Slim Fast is NOT suitable to be used as a total meal replacement diet!

Slim Fast meal replacements are available in 4 different ways, and in a range of flavours;

Powdered milkshake:Rich Chocolate - Simply Vanilla - Summer Strawberry - Cafe Latte - Blissful Banana

Ready made milkshake:Rich Chocolate - Simply Vanilla - Blissful Banana - Cafe Latte - Lemon meringue - Summer Strawberry

Ready made smoothies: Fruits of the Forest - Raspberry Crush

Meal Bars: Chocolate Peanut Bar - Cinnamon Raisin Flapjack - Summer Berry

Snacks: Chocolate Caramel Treat - Chocolate Nutty Nougat - Cheddar Flavour Bites - Sour Cream & Chive Flavour Pretzils - BBQ Flavour Tortillas

There are other brands that are the same as Slim Fast, for example Tesco have an own branded one, which is slightly cheaper 'Ultraslim'.

What you may need:
If you are going to have the ready made bottles then you need a recycling bin! :D that's a lot of plastic bottles you'll be throwing away.
If you are going to use the powder then you are going to need a blender or a milkshake shaker the Tupperware cups with screw lids are okay too.
If you chose to cook your own evening meal then you are going to need a set of kitchen scales so you can weigh and calorie count your meal (portion sizes may be a lot smaller than you think)
Some people choose to use ready meals like Weight Watchers or Healthy Living which come in at around 300 calories each, but remember to check the label, these can be high in salt, fat or saturated fat.

What kind of losses you can expect from Slim Fast;
Most report losses of between 1 and 3 pounds per week but what you will lose depends on your body, your current weight and the amount of exercise you do. This is a good way to guesstimate it, Visit Daily Calories and BMR enter your details and get your 'BMR' use this number and take away 1,300 (the average amount of calories consumed on Slim Fast) times that by 7 (days in a week) divide by 3,500 calories (the calorie deficit you need to lose 1lb) = your possible weight loss per week.

For example, my BMR is 3.058 - 1,300 = 1.758 x 7 = 12.306 / 3.500 = 3.516 which means on Slim Fast I should lose around 3½lb per week.

If you're dieting you want to keep your body hydrated. It is recommended to drink at least 2 litres per day but be careful, drinking too much water in a short space of time can be dangerous. Drink small amounts throughout the day aim for around 250ml (1 glass) an hour but no more than 800ml an hour.

Thanks for that "Lisa",great help to us newbees!

Few questions if you don't mind....

How long have you been doing SF ?
Is Tesco version as good?
Do you have any alcohol( I would like to have a few glasses of wine/bottles of beer at weekends but don't want to undo eveything) ?

I've done Slim Fast on and off since March more off than on

Tesco version is just as good though it's sweeter than Slim Fast

I'm sure wine or beer could be added into a Slim Fast diet I personally don't drink but if you can find out the calories, just work it in, so if you want to have a drink save up your 300 calories from snacks to use on alcohol. Example a 175ml glass of Lambrini Bianco has 96 calories try Calories in Wine that seems a good place to find out, there are links for different alcohols at the bottom of the page.

Hi FMBB, Twas pointed out that this thread is fab and worth putting as a sticky!!

There you go x

Thanks for the info. FMBB

what would happen if you just relied on the slim fast meals? no food. I tried lipotrim and it wasnt for me. made me ill. However i actually like the slim fast shakes. if i ensured i took all my vitamins do you think it might be okay as a kick start. Ive decided im going to have to finish the food in the house at least 3-4 weeks worth but im not buying any more food and im just going to buy the shakes and see what happens. Im ok during the day but in the evnings once i start eating i cant stop. this way the only thing there will be are shakes. has anybody done this before? if not then i may have to opt for a healthy microwave meal in the evening as gotta stop the bingeing in the evening.
will let you know when i start anyway - wont be for a few weeks yet. More than likely will start last week in november.
good luck to you all
x

I don't know what would happen, if it's going to be a few weeks before you start try contacting Slim Fast through www.slimfast.co.uk and ask them :)

Technically 3 Slim Fast shakes = about the same nutritional value as the 3 Lipotrim supplements minus some protein but I am NOT recomending you do that Slim Fast isn't meant as a TFR. I have tried Lipotrim and I know what you mean, the shakes are vile but they are made to taste like that because Lipotrim is for treating 'food addiction' so making them tasty would defeat the purpose. The best idea would be to do what you said, and buy ready meals Weight Watchers ready meals are £1 each in Iceland and you could have 2 of them plus your 2 Slim Fast shakes.

You might be able to do the slim fast only if you took vitamins and minerals ?
