NotsofattyPatty's fresh start.
I've been following Slimming World for nearly 2 years now and in that time have lost almost 4 stones. It has been slow, but I decided right at the beginning that this time was going to be different from other attempts to lose weight and I was going to lose the 'all or nothing' mentality I had previously had. I.e. I was allowed treats and I could have the odd day, or even days, off but then get back on the wagon. I reckoned that this is what normal (naturally slim) people do without thinking about it and it was a habit I wanted to cultivate. It had taken years to gain my excess poundage and I was happy to take years to lose it again. I was not going to put any pressure on myself to lose a certain amount in a certain length of time as I knew from past experience that that led to failure.
So why start a diary now? Well, I reckon I still have about another half stone to lose but would ideally like to drop a bit more so I fall into the 9 stone bracket. However, I am finding it difficult to focus now and keep sabotaging myself. This is partly because I can see so much difference in myself and other people keep commenting and complementing me but I'm not sure why else I'm doing it.
I'm hoping that committing to keeping a diary on here will bring me the focus I need and that people can suggest where I'm going wrong and give me the encouragement I need.
Oh, and perhaps I should add that I'm doing this alone. I have had two stints as an online member and have all the uptodate books but mostlyI've done it by myself. Perhaps I should join a group, but I'm not good with more than a couple of people around me (difficult to explain why, but it is a genuine problem).
I've been lurking around this site for a while, and the friendship and support given by members has impressed me. Whilst I hope that I might be given support, I also hope that I may also be able to support others.
Thank you for reading this far - I wasn't intending to post so much at this point - and I'll start my food diary in a separate post.
Thanks for your reply, Bless. I'll hunt out your diary.
Right then, food for today (EE):
Breakfast was ff natural yogurt with strawberries and raspberries.
Lunch: a big salad, with home-grown salad leaves and cucumber together with tomatoes, radishes, celery, beetroot and pepper. Poached salmon. Vlf salad. Cream (1 syn). Banana
Dinner: a green lentil and LMacC rosemary and red onion sausage dish I fished out of the freezer this morning. It already has onions and carrots in it but I served it with steamed cabbage and minted new potatoes. Muller Greek-style yogurt (0.5 syn)
Snacks so far have been nectarines, apricots and cherries.
Later this evening I shall have 2 Ryvitas with 3 mini Babybel lights and, if I need it, an Alpen light.
Syns = very low fat salad cream, Muller Greek and a splash of milk in a cup of tea. Total 2.5 (keeping them low whilst I'm feeling strong-willed to help compensate for yesterday's over indulgence)!
(I drink black coffee and a variety of herbal teas through the day, so don't use milk very often as a HEXA).
Went to my allotment on my way home from work. The soil was very dry so did a lot of watering (plenty of Bodymagic!) and picked a lettuce, cucumber, potatoes and mint. There will be some peas soon but I'm getting impatient for the tomatoes to ripen.
Breakfast: raspberries, strawberries and ff natural yogurt
1 slice Wm bread (58g) (HexB) 1tbsp ginger preserve (can't find this so allowing the generic jam/marmalade Synnage of 2)
Lunch: egg and new potato salad dressed with ff natural yogurt with mint sauce stirred in.
Tea: salmon, new potatoes, mushrooms and mushy peas. Strawberries and coconut Mullerlight Greek (0.5 Syns)
Snacks: nectarine, apricots, 2 mini Babybel (HexA), 2 Nestlé Black Magic chocolates (can't find in book, so using Syns of Dairy Milk chocs = 2.5 each, so total 5)
HexA = mini Babybel
HexB = Wm bread
Syns = 7.5
Saturday and I've planned a Red day.
Breakfast: I enjoyed my slice of toast so much yesterday that I had two today! Cut the crusts off so the 2 slices combined weighed 70g. Was a little more generous with the ginger preserve, so allowing 3.5 Syns. Followed by a banana.
Lunch: mixed salad with hard boiled egg and low fat cottage cheese with lemon squeezed over. Fruit to follow if I need it.
Tea: stir fry with chicken. I'll make a spicy sauce using passata, balsamic vinegar, Lea & Perrins and some spices. I was going to follow with a mini milk ice lolly, but OH went out this morning and came back with some Fat Rascals! These are a local delicacy which are a cross between a scone and a rock cake. Absolutely no idea as to Syns, but I think I can safely assume that one will use my remaining 11.5 Syns (and some)! However, I can have a free Activia yogurt instead and I've still got a HexA to use and I can have one or two Alpen Lights for a second HexB!
Yesterday went really well although I didn't fit in the second HexB or, more seriously, a HexA. However, I did have calcium-containing foods (yogurt and cottage cheese) so I don't think the omission will do me any harm on this occasion. It's not something I intend to make a habit of!
I enjoyed the Fat Rascal - yummmm.
Back to today, and the plan is for EE, assuming I can cope with cooking the gammon in this heat!
Breakfast: back to strawberries, raspberries and blueberries with ff natural yogurt. I beat a spoonful of Total 0% Greek yogurt into the ordinary yogurt which made it taste so creamy.
Lunch: Ryvitas and Low Low spreadable cheese with peppers and chilli (Hex A and B) with cherry tomatoes, celery sticks and carrot batons. Fruit.
Tea: gammon, jacket potatoes, roast onions and carrots, cabbage. 2 Syns for gravy.
Syns will be spent on another Fat Rascal! OH does not do things by half - he bought 4 between the two of us!
To finish on an important note: the scales are showing a 1lb loss for this week, so that's the weight I gained on holiday lost. It seems that my couple of days binging didn't do too much harm, possible because the chocolate and 'posh' olive oil Italian bread sticks combined had a - err - laxative effect on me (sorry, TMI)!
So I did change my plans for dinner last night - just didn't fancy gammon so it went in the freezer. I just threw the potatoes, onions and carrots into the slow cooker with a skinned turkey breast and some stock and let it cook whilst I enjoyed the Test Match. Nerves were totally frayed!
Afterwards, I went to the lotty and found the first of the peas were ready, so brought them home, together with a Little Gem lettuce, and we had braised leeks, peas and lettuce rather than cabbage. It was very tasty!
So, on to Monday and back to work. I've decided to try varying my HexBs a bit more this week and I'm starting with a red day.
Breakfast: 2 Weetabix (HexB1) 20ml Alpro hazelnut milk (1/2 HexA1). Banana and blueberries.
Lunch: salad (lettuce, cucumber, pepper, tomatoes, celery, beetroot, radishes) with some leftover turkey from last night. There was also a little of the braised leek/pea combo which I'm counting 1 Syn for, together with 1 for vlf salad cream. Muller light Greek style yogurt (1/2 Syn)and strawberries.
Dinner: Quorn 'spaghetti' bolognaise with lots of onion, celery, carrots, pepper and passata, served with steamed, finely shredded cabbage rather than pasta and 40g lf cheese (HexA2). Followed by mixed berries and a mix of Activia 0% fat lemon & lime yogurt and Total 0% Greek yogurt.
I still have a second HexB to use on one or two Alpen Lights or a Kellogg's Special K chewy bar and I may have a little chocolate as I've only had 2.5 Syns today.
Well my good intentions came to nothing due to circumstances beyond my control. However, back on the wagon again and started with a Red Day today but having to eat carefully after having a massive filling done yesterday.
Breakfast: 2 Weetabix (HexB) with 200ml Alpro Almond milk (part HexA). Strawberries.
Lunch: Activia 0% peach yogurt mixed with 0% Total (I've found doing this makes the yogurt a bit thicker and creamier and less cloyingly sweet). Banana, apricots and cherries. 3 Babybel lights (HexA2)
Dinner: Prawn and tuna salad (lettuce, toms, beetroot, pepper, cucumber) with extra-light salad cream (2Syns) Onion Bhaji (oops - Syns?). 30g wholemeal roll (1/2 HexB2) with a scraping of Low Low (part HexA with breakfast milk). Plain, ff yogurt with strawberries and raspberries.
Snacks: melon. 1 Black Magic chocolate (2.5 Syns)
Total Syns = 4.5 + the Bhaji
May have an Alpen Light before bed if I need it.
Unexpected hospital visiting this evening meant I had to rejig things as there wasn't time to eat before we went out and I wanted something quick when we got in. At least I managed to avoid a takeaway!
Breakfast: ff plain yogurt with raspberries and mango.
Lunch: tuna and prawn salad (lettuce, peppers, beetroot, cucumber, tomato). 1 Babybel light (1/3 HexA) Melon
Supper: Baked beans, mushrooms (cooked in Frylight), 'fried' egg on 75g wholemeal toast (HexB + 1 Syn), 20g rf cheddar (2/3 HexA). Onion bhaji (Syns?). Nectarine
Snacks: apricots and cherries. Biscuit from a deli - guesstimate 5 Syns
(OH bought the bhajis last night when he treated himself to a curry - he knows how much I like them! He's responsible for nearly all the 'naughty' things I eat because he likes to treat me. I've given up trying to educate him into buying me some nice fruit or flowers and instead I've decided to educate myself into making things last eg allowing myself to have one or two sweets, chocolates or whatever each night. Before, I would have said 'Oh what's the point?', eaten them all in one go and given up. OK, it's making for slow progress but I think I'm learning to cope and I won't put all the lost weight back on).
6 Syns + the bhaji
Well, I’ve had a rubbish ten days – out for morning coffee and scones/cake, meals out, takeaways and generally given in to the desire to overeat, particularly in the evenings. Fortunately, I’ve (mostly!) kept control at work, so the gain hasn’t been as bad as it might have been.
This morning I mentioned to OH that my weight is creeping up again as I’ve been having too many ‘little treats’ and that I want to be particularly careful for the next few weeks until we go to Paris over the Bank Holiday. Hopefully, he’s taken this on board and won’t be buying me anything naughty but nice for a while!
I’m starting again as of today and I’m going to try to write up my food diary in advance rather than in retrospect to see if that makes me stronger. I’m also going to try totalling my Syns weekly as sometimes I can be very strong-minded and use very few but it would be good to have them properly recorded so if I need a few extra I know how many I have in reserve. (I’m aiming for 70 a week but will go over to a maximum of 105 if life gets in the way).
So, on to my food for today.
Breakfast: 2 Weetabix (HexB)
200ml Alpro Hazelnut milk (1/2 HexA)
Lunch: Salad (salad leaves, cabbage, beetroot, carrot, sweetcorn, tomatos)
Activia 0% peach yogurt
Dinner: Pasta Bolognaise (Quorn, onions, courgettes, carrots, celery, peppers, passata and maybe some petits pois)
20gr reduced fat cheddar (1/2 HexA)
Strawberries and fat free fromage frais mixed with a little sweetener.
Snacks: Apricots, nectarine
2 Black Magic chocolates (5 Syns)
Alpen Light (3 Syns)
Total Syns: 8/70
I’m adding one Syn to yesterday’s total as I added a little bit of meringue to my strawberries and fromage frais, so weekly total = 9/70
I gathered my own ‘Super Eight’ from the allotment last night: lettuce, beetroot, cabbage, French beans, runner beans, courgettes, pattypan squash and tomatoes. I need to look up some imaginative things to make with them – the French beans are in three different colours (purple, yellow and green) so should make an attractive salad.
Breakfast: 2 Weetabix (HexB)
200ml Alpro Almond milk (not quite ˝ HexA but will have SS milk ina cup of tea later and count both as a ˝)
Lunch: Salad (salad leaves, cabbage, beetroot, carrot, sweetcorn, tomatoes)
Roast chicken (skinned)
Dinner: Yesterday’s leftover Quorn bolognaise stuffed into an overgrown courgette (not quite marrow-sized ), topped with 20gr reduced fat cheddar (1/2 HexA), Runner beans, cabbage and either some boiled new potatoes or roasted beetroot, depending what time I get home from work via the allotment.
2 Minimilk lollies (put in a bowl as ice-cream) with strawberries (3 Syns)
Snacks: Apricot, nectarine
Special K chewy bar (4.5 Syns)
1 Black Magic chocolate (2.5 Syns)
Total Syns: 10 (Running total = 18/70)
I thought I had explained my worries about eating the wrong things very tactfully to my OH but today he came home with a cherry pie and a luxury carrot cake - I nearly cried! I sometimes wonder if he listens to me. I know he has absolutely no idea about calories and so forth (and is very happy to remain ignorant) but even he must realise cake is fattening. If it goes on then I will just have to be blunt.
Anyway, the upshot of that was an amendment to my planned Syns. I just had fat free yogurt with the strawberries and had a tiny piece of cake for 7 Syns.
Breakfast: plain fat free yogurt with blueberries, blackberries, nectarine and raspberries
Lunch: as yesterday's dinner (less cheese). Muller light yogurt, annoyed with myself for forgetting to take an Alpen Light to work with me so may skip HexB for today.
Dinner: salad (lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, pepper, beetroot) with grilled salmon and new potatoes. Salad cream (1 Syn)
Cherry pie (left almost all the pastry) with plain ff yogurt -allowing 6 Syns for this.
Will it be a little more cake? Or a little chocolate and HexB? To be decided and then I'll tot up the Syns.
First: an update of yesterday.
I did have the cake (7 Syns) but nothing else so missed out on a HexB. Total Syns for day =14 (32/70)
Breakfast: 2 Weetabix, 180 ml Alpro Almond milk (1/2ish HexA). Blackberries, blueberries
Lunch: chicken, salad (lettuce, tomato, peppers, cucumber etc.) Dressing of plain ff yogurt with mint sauce stirred in.
Muller light yogurt. Cherries
Dinner: Cauliflower cheese (5 Syns for cheese sauce) + 20g rf cheddar (1/2 HexA), 200gr McCain's 5% fat oven chips (3 Syns)
Tomato ketchup (1syn)
Strawberries and ff plain yogurt
Cake (7 Syns) 1/2 mini chocolate roll (2 Syns)
Total Syns = 19 (37/70)
Breakfast: ff natural yogurt. Blackberries, raspberries, blueberries
Lunch: 80g wholemeal bread (HexB + 1 Syn), 2 poached eggs. Nectarine
Dinner: shop-brought cheese and onion quiche. (counting this as 2HexA and 1/2 HexB - I suspect oil was used and hoping it was olive oil. Won't be eating the pastry). Potatoes roasted in Frylight, runner beans, carrots and cabbage. Melon
Snacks: Alpen Light and some sort of pastry brought by OH - guessing 15 Syns for this.
Syns total = 16
Scales yesterday show a 3/4lb loss. Pleased with that as it's a good loss for me, so why do I 'celebrate' by going off the rails?!
It wasn't massively off, but wish I'd managed to exercise a bit more control. 'Must not reward myself with food' - repeat, repeat, repeat...
I've also realised that I started counting my Syns from Tuesday, although I weigh on Sunday! Also realised that today makes it 10 days until my trip to Paris so I'm going to try counting Syns across 10 days rather that the usual 7. Aiming for approx 10 a day/ 100 total. Not aiming for any specific loss as that invites failure (because I'm a slooooow loser).
Monday: Trying for a Red Day
Breakfast: 2 Weetabix (Hexb), 200ml Alpro Almond milk (1/2 HexA), blueberries. Croissant (oh dear, getting in the holiday mood too soon - 15 Syns? - to check)
Lunch: Salad with turkey. 2 mini Babybel (2/3 2nd HexA), melon and portion of scanbran cake (1/2 2nd HexB and 1Syn)
Will update on dinner later as not sure if hospital visiting.
