Wholemeal bread question- can we deduct 6 syns from wholemeal bagels/pitta?

Hi all, I know wholemeal bagels and pitta (except WW pitta) can't be used as a HexB, but can we deduct 6 syns and just syn the rest?

The book says '60g of ANY wholemeal bread' so I wondered if the reason wholemeal bagels and pitta aren't listed is because they are bigger and hold extra calories- could someone let me know if I could minus 6 syns from the overall 20cal per syn rule... I.e if it were 10 syns for the wholemeal Bagel I could HexB it + 4 syns?

If not could someone let me know why it says 'ANY wholemeal bread' but WM pitta and bagels don't count? Surely they have enough fibre since they are still wholemeal... must just be because they hold extra calories (that surely we can syn!?)

Would be good to know as have been struggling to track down WW pitta (except white ones) and would love to have a wholemeal bagel :D

Thanks in advance.

Officially, I don't think you're supposed to, as pitta breads, bagels, wraps etc are essentially different to regular bread, and you might not get enough of the fibre benefit your HEB is supposed to provide by eating these in place of regular wholemeal bread.

Personally I do occasionally tweak the plan and do use alternative wholemeal products in place of the standard wholemeal bread (e.g. wholemeal wraps if I want to make a wrap pizza), and it hasn't affected my losses so far, but the official line would be that this isn't allowed. However, I don't eat many bread products at all so this isn't a regular occurence for me, but I could imagine it might become a problem if I was doing it every day.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for getting back to me.
How does wholemeal lose fibre along the process though? Do you think it is like oil or something used in bagels?

No idea on that one, but it might be the use of different types of flour in each variety, or like you say, other additions such as oil? I bet if you look up the fibre content per 100g of a few different things you'll find that pittas/wraps/bagels etc are lower, with the exception of the allowed ones such as WW Pitta Breads.

Thanks guys. Was just hopeful I guess ;) I haven't seen people say "That's a HexB +4 syns" for things so I wondered if it was just the case that it couldn't be a HexB only.
Am so obsessed with chocolate orange shreddies right now that I don't have Hex's to spare on bready things anyway lol! :D

Can someone tell me where they've seen WW wholemeal pitta available though? I've checked my local big Sainsbury's and Morrisons but can only seem to find WW white pitta.

They are only in larger tesco stores/ tesco online

Yes I was going to say, have only been able to find them in Tesco! They are worth it if you can get hold of them though - I love to make Syn free pizzas with them by slicing them in half and topping with tomato puree, veggies and cheese. Delicious!

And it is exactly that I'm afraid, old. The only wholemeal pitta which counts as a HExB now is the WW ones. HEx's are constantly changing and therefore certain threads become out of date - if you're unsure it's always best to check the SW website or give them a call.

When SW changed the rules about Asda pittas Asda had not changed the recipe for them - after goodness knows how long SW had used them as a HEX they suddenly decided they are now a no no. How does that work? Someone wrote to Asda and asked what had changed and Asda said nothing had.

Great, will look out for them in Tesco, ta! Pitta pizza spunds fab, my dad used to top pitta with bolognase and cheese- delish!

Weird re: Asda pittas... Maybe SW just realised it was a bit of a c*ck up to allow them in the first place?

Re HexB's plus syns. People do "tweak" the plan a bit and do take a HexB + a few syns.
Many do it with chocky wheatabix and take this as a HexB plus 2 syns.

But you just need to be a bit careful that you are getting enough fibre.

To classify as a HexB the portion size must contain 3g of fibre.
That's what Ryvita Wholegrain Krackerbreads have just been removed from the HexB list.

So for wholemeal bread to count as a HexB it has to have 3g fibre per 60g portion.
That's often why pittas and bagel's aren't a HexB - just not enough of the right stuff.

According to the Tesco's website:
WW Wholemeal pittas are 106 cals per pitta (so within the 6 syns) and contain 3.4g fibre. So that's why they sneak in as a HexB.
Tesco Wholemeal pittas are 63g weight and have enough fibre (3.9g) BUT are 160 cals - so way over allowance to make it a HexB.
So you could probably "tweak" these to being a HexB plus 2 syns reasonably safely.

There's another fred that discussed homemade wholemeal bread too and whether you can make your own bread and eat that.
As you can see, some wholemeal flour just does not contain enough fibre.
Lidl's doesn't - but Tescos does.

I still use the Asda ones and add 1 syn - if they were good enough for a couple of years they are good enough now. No syns - use a pair of scissors but don't do what I did and pop the cut off bit in your mouth. :)

LOL - only problem is there is only 2.8g fibre in each pitta - so not really enough.
But another tweak coming up here me thinks.

Yes I do do SW to the word most of the time but just a little sometimes I do disagree with them ;) .2 is not the end of the world and they did have them as hex for 2 years that I know of. Being veggie I get loads of fibre
Thanks for your info for the Spanish yogurt - went to Mercadonna and got the bifudus fruit yogurt 0% and it is very nice. Was surprised at the price of the cottage cheese in Lidl - 1 euro 19 compared to about 49p in UK and I thought Spain was cheap. :D

I do this with weightwatchers bagels. They are 154 calories per 70g bagel but each one has 4.8g of fibre in - that works out as 4.1g fibre per 60g so over the 3g per 60g portion. I either eat only 3/4 of the bagel or do HEb+2 syns. It's never affected my weight loss and you feel a lot fuller on one of these than a small bread roll. Because they are soft they make fab pizzas and yummy toast if you spray with frylight before toasting - no need for spread.

Exactly what I wondered and wanted to hear! The science and maths is right for the ww wholemeal bagels, I bet if they were just a smaller portion they'd fit as a HexB... I feel safe going for them as a HexB+2 after this convo, ta ;)

P.s. Had a ww wholemeal pitta with grilled cheese and ketxhup tonight- yum! Much nicer than the nibble of my sister's oven pizza I tried earlier :p

Another good trick I've discovered is if I fancy bread/toast which I've cut right down on whilst losing is, if I have 2 wholemeal 60 g rolls ( I do red/green days) I slice them into 3 slices, making 6 rounds of toast. They're so much like real toast, instead of 2 wafer thin hard warburtons sliced bread toasted! I'm also gutted about the co-op pitta being taken away. As its my local, but now I'm at target if I want one ill flipping have one as a hex B! :)
