Can too much salad make you constipated??

One day at a time
Hiya everyone

Sorry I know its not a very nice subject, but since starting sw I've had a least one salad a day and to be honest I've become really constipated has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do to relieve it, thanks very much for your help. Boo xx

No, as Salad is mainly water and plant fibre.
Try increasing your water intake.
Make sure you're not peeling potatoes, are using wholewheat pasta and mix your white rive with brown (brown rice on it's own is yuck!)
Are you eating your Hexb? You could try changing your Heb if you always eat the same.
Try using your syns on something oily, Olive oil as a Heb, or whatever you choose.
Also exercise is fabulous for the bowel, I know that 10 minutes on the recumbent cycle at the gym gets me going!

Tbh i tend to find the opposite!! If youre not used to eating so much veg it could have confused your body a bit but you would expect that to balance out after a few days.

As said above, make sure youre getting all your hebs. Also if youre doing red days, watch things like eggs and eating a lot of meat, as that can block you up so to speak.

Thanks everyone for your replies, the reason I say this about the salad is because I have ibs and fibre bloats my body and makes me constipated, so in essence I eat bran it will make me constipated (weird I know!) so, I've decided to up my veg intake as this has been really low apart from the salad. I'm having all my healthy extra's and I drink between 3 to 4 litres of water and juice a day. I hope this will sort me out, thanks again for all your replies Boo xx

are you doing red/green or extra easy? i cant do extra easy it makes me really bloated and i didnt go to the loo for a week! sorry TMI!

Hiya Nettie

I usually do ee with some red thrown in. I was wondering if I would be better just doing red what do you think? Boo xx

I think your IBS is in flare up because of the change to your eating habits. if you stick with it it should settle down I wouldn't keep changing.

Thanks Shirleen

Your most probably right, he has flared up quite bad since starting this diet so I'm just gonna keep going, I've got some remedies I'm going to try so fingers crossed it will dampen down. Boo xx

I struggle doing just reds as I do love a nice pasta bake with loads of veg but I do mainly red with maybe 2 green a week. I'd try it, as long as you are on plan you shouldnt gain weight, just play around with the different days x

Yes salad CAN make you constipated. We've had this topic in class. If you think of what it consists of, it's mainly water, and there isn't enough bulk in it compared with more solid vegetables. I had the same problem, and now I have it in addition to my meals not as a meal per se, ie tuna salad.Or I will have wholemeal bread to provide some fibre.

Thank you I thought I was going mad! Boo xx

I agree with this.

Veg is like 90% - 95% water so you end up weeing it out rather than the other way, therefore there's not alot left in your intestines anywho!

I really struggle with getting bulk in my diet too and therefore get bad constipation. I eat tonnes and tonnes of salad and veg.

Me too  Boo xx

Hi. I have Crohns disease which is an IBD rather than an IBS but it's mostly the same symptoms!

I always have had the opposite problem to constipation so when constipated I go for the types of food I would usually try to avoid and also up my water intake and move a bit more (I refuse to say exercise but walk somewhere etc). I find tomatoes and cheese help for me but it's different for everyone. Also, fibre helps too as others have mentioned.

Hope this helps x
