    Do antibiotics make a difference??

I started a course of antibiotics yesterday morning and have felt extremely bloated ever since. When I attended a group a couple of years ago I remember people saying that the reason they had gained was because they were taking antibiotics. I was just wondering if this had happened to anyone on here ????

never heard of that! they mess with your gut flora, which will mess with your ability to absorb nutrients properly... but I can't see how it'd affect weight in the "wrong" way (i.e. cause gain) if anything you're just bloated because of the flora imbalance and possibly a little water retention.
try an activia, some bio yogurt or another pre and probiotic for the duration of your antibiotics.

Yes. If you have to take them, then you have to, but they do play havoc with your metabolism for a while. All consultants know this, and will make allowances.

My c said there are no calories in anti biotics.

My view is that it could be the symptoms for what your taking them for, and when your unwell your body is in fight mode with the virus/wound etc so may 'demand' energy creating desire to eat, what we choose can also be impaired as we want to comfort eat.

As long as your sticking to plan it should all work out, hope you feel better soon

I've still managed to stick to plan (apart from yesterday when I didn't have my 2nd HEb - felt too ill). I must admit I have felt rather 'nibbley' today, probably because I've been on the sofa all day and it's been the longest day ever! Have synned the things I have nibbled on (only a couple of biscuits). I guess I'll just have to wait until Saturday morning to see how I've got on

Yes! I was on antibiotics a week or so ago (Augmentin - finished the course last Saturday) and on the weigh-in in the middle of the course I gained a pound. I'd stuck completely to plan all of that week, so the anti-b's were the only "new" thing that I'd put into my body. This week, two days after I'd finished them, I'd lost 2lb. The whole week I was on the anti-biotics I felt bloated and clogged-up. I definitely think they have an effect on weight loss.

I must admit I did have a sneaky peak on the scales this morning (I know I know! Lol) , a day before my usual weigh in day and I've stayed the same, not a happy bunny! Still got 4 more days of antibiotics to go but hopefully by next weeks weigh in I should be back to normal

I've just finished a course of antibiotics and gained 2.5 pounds at wi. That's probably more to do with all the crap I ate though!!! ;-)

Still feeling ill - viral the docs think now because antibiotics didn't work. Jumped back on the wagon now though, decided I needed vitamins not chocolate!!!xx
