Energy drinks for golf and exercise

Hello SWers!

I've been wondering for a while, what would make the best rehydrating, energy boosting drink for when I play a round of golf?

I understand that sugar-free Red Bull drinks are free, but the amount of caffeine in them rules out drinking more than one...well, without the headaches and heart palpitations! Before SW I used to drink Lucozade Sport, but these are full of sugars, so have avoided like the plague.

Have seen the new Lucozade drinks at 50 calories (so 2.5 syns or so, I'm guessing) and wanted to ask you good people if you had tried it and, more importantly, did it work for sustained exercise?

Any other suggestions, please?

Many thanks in advance...

Hi there

My DH cycles amazing amounts of miles everyday & Im now upping my milage to 20 - 40 miles most days & we use Zero High Five. Its not an energy drink, but purely used for re-hydration, with all the minerals etc required for exercise with no calories. You pop 1 tablet into approx 750mls of water & it comes in a few different flavours. We bought it off Amazon which was a bit cheaper than most sports shops, but each 20 tab tube is approx £6.99.
We would never be without now.
Just out of curiosity, is golf that energetic that you need energy drinks or is it the re-hydration you're after?!!!

Walk around an 18 hole golf course carrying a big bag of clubs up and down hills hon, it uses plenty of energy i can assure you

Haha, Im sure it does & Im not disputing that it doesn't use a fair bit of energy, but does it require energy drinks? My brother & father (who up til he passed away & in his late 60's) played golf & never used energy drinks. My brother is a very good & keen golfer, so I can always ask him for any advice if you like.

In answer to the main question tho, if you feel you need energy drinks, there are a lot on the market, in powder form & already made up that you can buy. You could always pop into a reputable sports shop & ask what is recommended.

Banana at the start and water for the course. Simples!

Yesterday I did a 40 mile ride in just under 3 hours & burned a lot of calories.....we have a lot of cheeky hills in Dorset! I had porridge & skimmed milk for breakfast, took a banana with me & drank about 1.5 litres of made up Zero tabs......still full of beans afterwards & not dehydrated.

Thanks for the replies, people!

Rehydration is the main factor Kim, so the Zero tablets sound perfect for that (I will buy some immediately!), but there's often an energy 'slump' at around the 12th/13th hole.

Have tried bananas Madame, but they just don't give the kick that I need - hopefully the minerals etc. in the Zero thingies will do the trick and maintain energy levels throughout.

A full English breakfast used to set me up beautifully for a round of golf...with peanut butter and jam sandwiches during the round...alas, no more! Although, on the bright side, I can now put on my shoes without getting out of breath :)

As for 18 holes of golf needing energy, I guess it depends on the person and the course, eh Paul?! A flat course, using a buggy or electric trolley = nice, gentle walk in the country. Marching around the golfing equivalent of the Himalayas carrying your own weight in metal for around 5 miles = a pretty good workout!

Thanks again everyone

Btw mate you do realise you can still have a fry up free on SW right? well apart from 1/2 a syn for each sausage if you buy the right ones.

We have a fry up once per week with sausage, bacon, fried egg, mushrooms and beans - YUM!

Sausages that are easily available for low syns include Sainsburys be good to yourself cumberland for 1/2 syn each and i know morrisons, M&S and tescos do something similar.

Hope that helps

Glad I could help MisterQ & hope the Zero tabs help as they certainly do for us cyclists!
How about some porridge before your round of golf? As Paul says as well, a SW fry up is delicious & virtually syn free.

Oh yes, have had many SW fry ups at home, but they're not the same as the ones at the golf club ;)

Really helpful tips on the sausages, thanks Paul - I do like a cumberland snorker - will stock up when I next go shopping.

Porridge a possibility Kim, but I'm not a huge fan - might have to give it another go. I know it is good for a slow release. Berry and Pink Grapefruit 'High 5 Zero' tabs ordered, found a place called Dolphin Fitness online that is selling them for £4.65 each, with a discount to £4.31 each for 4 or more purchased...and free delivery!

Thanks again for your help people - really very much appreciated.

We will see what happens when I play on Friday!

That is brilliant news on the price on Zero tabs MisterQ & I'm normally the bargain queen! Think I paid 5 pound something with a small reduction with bulk buying. Ill definitely be getting our next batch from that provider. Would you mind letting me know if they arrive ok & would be really interested to know how you get on with them.

I think I just struck lucky! I did pay for super-quick delivery, so I can try them out on the golf course tomorrow - should have them at the office by 12.30 today. From memory, standard, free delivery was by next Wednesday - no trouble at all if there's no rush.

Will report back on Friday evening!

Well, an update was promised, so here it is!

The people I ordered the High 5 Zero things from (Dolphin Fitness) were brilliant. Delivered on time, well packaged and in tip-top condition.

As for the drinks - perfect. Exactly what I need. They don't taste of much, but haven't had that 12th/13th hold drop in energy that I have been suffering. So all good there!

Have just finished my 5th round in a week, and feel so much better than I would normally after just the one round!

And I've also tracked down the half-syn cumberland snorkers!

Thanks everyone!

So glad you found they help! I use them all the time cycling & are fantastic for rehydration, so much better than water as you know you're getting all your minerals replaced.
Glad I could help x
