    Can it be done?

    Hey everyone well the thing is that I have got an operation next Tuesday and not sure how I am going to stay on plan, I'm sure everyone knows what I mean because when I'm ill all I want to do is eat rubbish! Plus I'm sure hospital food isn't going to be all that healthy, il only be in for 2 days hopefully but going to end up off plan completely any one got any advice as too maybe how to try stay on plan? Feeling hopeful here lol
    Start weight - Monday 7th July 2014 - 14 st 11 lbs
    Goal weight - 9 st 0 lbs

    Week 1 - 14/07/2014 - (-6lbs) 14 st 5 lbs

    You could make yourself some meals now & put them in the freezer, make sure you've got some low syn treats in, and the food you do have in is easy to cook you'l not really feel like cooking for a while.

    Hi Roxy

    First and foremost: good luck and I hope the operation goes well for you and I wish you a speedy recovery

    Hospital food isn't 'up there' with the most highly desirable/sought after meals! And, I totally understand about feeling under the weather and craving 'comfort' foods.

    It may not be practical to have frozen foods taken in with you, so my suggestions will be a bit mundane, but do-able!

    Not sure whether you are a sweet or savoury kind of eater and that will be something you need to take into consideration before you go because it will affect what you may take with you (or have brought in for you by a faithful visitor )

    The obvious things to take in with you would be a variety of fruits and maybe even some 'salad' vegetables to eat like fruit (I'm thinking cherry tomatoes, maybe cucumber which can be cubed).
    How about packing some Mug Shots? All you need to do is ask for some hot water (or, ask that kindly visitor to bring you a flask of hot water?).
    Perhaps some Options sachets so you can have a sweet, chocolaty, low syn drink?
    A small jar of Bovril so you could have a savoury drink?
    Maybe some herbal teabags so you don't *have* to have milky teas/coffees and won't be able to guestimate the milk values?
    How about some of those cereals you can purchase in individual serving sizes to snack on?
    Could a visitor bring in some boiled eggs for snacking on? (Maybe in one of those insulated mini cool bags people use for packed lunches?) Likewise some chicken drumsticks?


    I think salads and jacket potatoes do feature on hospital menus (but, it's a long time since I was in one, so I could be wrong) and those would be the obvious choices to make if you are given a choice.

    Two days really isn't that long at all - especially as a good part of those 2 days will be taken up with a) the op; b) recovery and c) sleeping!

    Depending on the type of op, will you have some help for when you return home? That is when those frozen meals HH suggests could come in very useful!

    I can only agree with the above about getting some food prepared and frozen so that you don't have to be cooking when you come out of hospital. No idea about hospital food, but I'd say that your top priority while you're there is trying to get better and get home!! Hope everything goes well. xx

    Hi,
    I've had several operations, some of them whilst on plan.
    On the menu sheet they pass round there is a 'reducing' option at the top (tick box) which basically means low fat/healthy.
    Also, the do soups, sandwiches (think you can choose brown bread) which can be low syn depending which you choose, and when I was in they did pasta in tomato based sauces. Mashed potatoes are not overly fluffy which says to me that there's hardly any butter in them, and depending what days you are in I hear they do roast lunches on Sundays (never been in on a Sunday myself so can't confirm this). I managed to find fairly good options whilst I was in, but there is something you need to consider.......

    You need food to heal!

    Food gives your body the energy to do its thing, which you need it to do to heal yourself. Another good thing is that you supposedly lose weight in your sleep, and if you are anything like me whilst recovering from surgery, you will sleep.... A lot (suppose it could be from the boredom of being laid up - depending what surgery and the healing time obviously).

    Hope everything goes well for you (or went well if you've already had your surgery, in which case my reply is now pointless lol)

    Thank you for replying, a little late lol I had my op on the 18th of February. As you have said there actually surprisingly really healthy options available with basically kept to plan e.g baked potato with cheese and salad and also a muller light yoghurt so I was quite happy at that and yes I did sleep a lot lol x
