Just been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and have been reading through all the dietary advice. The emphasis is on low-GI foods, which requires some serious rethinking for someone who has been doing SW for a while!
For instance, wholemeal bread is high-GI, supposed to have seeded or granary bread instead. Which of course should be synned. Basmati rice is OK, but other kinds aren't - not really sure why. Some types of fruit are better than others.
I think I will have to sit down with a large notepad tonight, and work all this out!

She has a book called Carbs and Cals and if you have an iPad or iphone there is also an app. It's basically counting carbohydrates, a bit like points. The book shows you examples of meals and how many carbs would be in each portion. She swears by the book and it comes everywhere.
Hopefully your GP has offered to refer you to a dietician (not sure if they do that as routine?) but it would be really beneficial to give you a good eating plan.
Not great for SW but you'll be surprised at the stuff you can find that's low/no carb e.g bacon and egg.
There's also a website called diabetes.co.uk which has loads of advice and low carb cookbooks you can download for free. They do an email newsletter every week too which is someone's useful.
Thank you for your advice and support. I went on a morning's course and have lots of leaflets, and will have a long appointment with a specialist nurse next week.
It's not just a question of low-carbohydrate, as I understand it, but different types of carbohydrate classed by glycaemic index. It's like syns, or calories - just a question of mathematics!!
Don't SW have a booklet for diabetics? If you go to a class it might be worth asking the consultant.
I can't get to a class at the moment, unfortunately.
My friend has just been diagnosed as well and have just asked my cons a question about the books .will let you know the answer and if my friend joins I could share the information x
