Do you have time to waste?
Please, if you have no time to waste, don't read any further, because this is addictive!!
GeoGuessr - Let's explore the world!
It is an online game using Google Streetview, which drops you in some unknown place and you have to work out from any clues you can see - street signs, scenery, guesswork - where you are. You score points for how close you get.
Utterly pointless, utterly addictive. But lots of fun. You have been warned!!
Thanks for posting this (or maybe not ha ha)I've had a few tries and I'm rubbish, haven't even got the right continent yet!
I got 8255 points, but I've no idea if that is good or bad!!!!!
I have played four sets over the past week. First mark was around 6,000, second one 26,633, third one 26,673, fourth one can't quite remember but it was over 30,000. There was one I just couldn't get started on - gave up and started again - it was somewhere far eastern and I couldn't find a single clue as to where.
Oh, I didn't realise there were clues, I was just going on the terrain & buildings!
The clues are in the picture. First of all you look at the terrain and the vegetation - is it cold/hot, mountainous/flat, what is the soil like (it may be sandy if it is near the sea). What side of the road are they driving on? As you move along the road in either direction, you may see road signs, shop names, street names, lots of little clues that build up an idea of where you are. For instance, if you see signs in Portuguese, you might be in Portugal. Or you might be in Brazil. Where else in the world do they speak Portuguese?
BUT - I discovered that I have been "cheating" at Geoguessr and breaking the "rules". I say "cheating" and "rules" in inverted commas because actually there aren't any rules, but apparently there are unwritten rules (so just how was I supposed to know that???) and I have been doing too much researching and not enough guessing. Apparently one "rule" is that you aren't supposed to open another tab and Google something you have seen in the picture. But didn't know that, and I am a researcher by nature and by profession, so that's the way I am playing it, so there!!
