Cycling

After 3 weeks on holiday I am back and ready to get back to class tomorrow evening. To get my weight loss back on track I'm going to start cycling 3 times a week. Just wondering if any other people have found their weight loss or inch loss improved with cycling..

Hey Sian - welcome back!!

I've been doing indoor cycling (spin) classes for the last 6 months or so and it has definitely made a huge difference to my shape/size/inches. It's hard to know about weight loss as I rarely have a 100% week (I took the naughty social, scenic route to target!) but my fitness improved massively, I felt a lot better, had loads more energy, my clothes were getting bigger and when I was naughty, I didn't seem to put on as much weight so must have helped my metabolism too :)

Cycling is really good, my partner cycles a lot (100 miles a day sometimes, madness i tell you), and since he taken up this habit he has toned up so much, he was never big bit you can really tell theres been a change. And he eats loads aswell!

Hi I started cycling 3 times a week about 2 months ago, as yet I haven't seen results. I live in hope as all the cyclists I know are really toned and it's not that they are dieting and doing excessive exercise. so it must be good! Apparently cycling works on thighs, calves, glutes, tummy and butt!! Perfect exercise really
I have a 1yr old child on the back of the bike with me which I assumed would help with the extra weight resistance. However I have 3 month old baby and alot of fresh baby weight to get rid of so maybe that's the reason..

Thanks for all the replies.. Getting my bike all sorted ready for Saturday's ride.. Will let you know how I get on..
Thanks again sian x

Good luck!:) I love cycling,I started off 6 months ago just to and from work(2miles a day) but today I managed 8 miles along the canal path,it was lovely.
As for whether it helps weight wise it's a big fat yes!!! I've toned up so well since starting to use my bike, arms legs and even my waist! But to be honest it's the pure enjoyment that I love the most, enjoy xxx

Good luck! I cycle to work and back every day so that's 2 hrs 30 a week of exercise just as part of my routine. I'm sure it has helped me to lose even when not sticking to SW as thoroughly as I should, and the exercise has helped me maintain muscle rather than losing it (losing muscle makes maintenance hard). I do have big chunky thighs now... but you win some you lose some!

I have bought an exercise bike as I don't have the time to run anymore, I can take the baby monitor into the garage and still exercise, I know its not such a good exercise as road cycling but hope it will benefit a little, time will tell. Certainly makes me erm hot after 40 mins on one of the higher resistance levels.

Went out for my first bike ride in ages on Friday morning.. Omg.. But back out again tomorrow... Trust me to go where there are hills lol x

Its really easy to cycle fifteen miles, and that burns off 700 calories, at a nice leisurely pace 11mph. Find someone to go cycling with Home Page - Sky Ride

I would be careful relying on those numbers as gospel. They are a very general rule of thumb and are in no way accurate, for example when my other half and I cycle the same route together I can easily burn 400 calories whilst he only burns 200 due to a difference in fitness and ability.

The only way to know how many calories you're burning is to to buy a heart rate monitor, otherwise you're very likely to overestimate :)

When measuring calories burnt through exercise you also need to take care that you are looking at the 'net' calories burnt.

For example, during my 3 hour walk the other week I burnt about 700 calories (I entered all the stats and my body weight, heart rate etc into a calculator). But actually only 500 or so of those were due to the walk. The other 200 I would've burnt just doing my normal routine. So if I'd eaten an extra 700 calories that day it might've been disastrous!

Bit off topic but I only just found this out myself and found it interesting! :)

Just glad I'm not worrying about the calories... Lol just want to get fit and tone up. But all info has been taken onboard Just incase and I'm sure they will be wanted at a later date... ;-) x

I don't like to think about calories burnt as then I get tempted to eat incorrectly. Last year I was doing 5k runs and put weight on, I got to be a fitter fatty not good. This year I have waited a while before introducing exercise to get good eating habits established. I guess we all work differently or I might be on my own with this one lol!

Anyway 3 15km bike rides (in the comfort of the garage) 3.5lb loss this week, would love to think there is some toning in there too :D

Hi all, I'm looking to get back onto my exercise bike and wondered if anyone had found any good training programmes online? I know Bupa do training programmes for running, but I haven't had much luck finding a training one for indoor biking! I think I'm quite a visual person and I like ticking off the days when I have completed the exercise. x

Have you looked on you tube.. X

if you cycle on an exercise bike instead of a real bike it becomes a chore. Do it with some friends on some nearby cycle routes and it becomes fun. Three hours passes and its entertaining, even when it rains!
