Activity Trackers - are they worth it?

Lives here....
I'm debating getting a fitbit flex. I've been looking for a while. I did initially want a jawbone up24 but at over £120 it's just silly money. However the fitbit has good reviews and comes in at half the price. Currently in argos at £10 off too.

Does anyone have one and do you find it complements SW? I'm really sedentary and would hope that it would shame me into moving a bit more so I can lose this last half a stone or so to hit target.

Thanks Michelle, if they don't see this thread I'll PM them in a bit :)

That's very useful. I like the idea of the flex simply because you can wear it straight instead of clipping it to things and like you say it syncs. Because I have an iphone there is an app that it will sync with automatically. :) I'm looking to get a little nudge to get moving some more. I find it too easy to just sit. Plus I work in a large school so would be good to see my activity in term time v holiday time.

I have read that you can set it to dominant or non dominant hand and this affects the sensitivity so hopefully too much arm waving wouldn't be too damaging :)

thanks cave girl! :)

No, from what I have read it has 5 little led lights. Each worth 2000 steps. They light up as you hit each target. Maybe you have to tap it, I suppose that's likely simply from an energy conserving point of view. Do you find that yours makes you more conscious of what you are doing in terms of moving around? I'm my own worst critic and very very competitive so I would hope that it would tap into that mindset and pit me against myself to hit the targets. Its a bonus that it tracks kcal burn and although the food lists are American I don't eat convenience food so could track my diet too. For any one else reading this I know that's not the point of SW but for me the time has come to exercise restraint and learn portion control! Something SW doesn't really concern itself with, a problem if, like me, you have a very quiet off switch! ;)

Following this with interest as was looking at these things in the newspaper. I am NOT very techie and don't want to waste money so am not sure but I do like things that give me a push. I think with me I have to make things playful!

So do as I have done for a few days and then see where I can incorporate more. That's good advice! Apparently its possible to programme in other activity too like cycling (get the bike out Sam!) and swimming (which I love). More than anything I just want an all round picture of my activity and a little nudge to increase it. I reckon it might just do that.

I'm the same. Give me an app or a gadget and I'm all over it. I will go and get one today I think (managed to reserve on at argos before they all sold out) and let you know how easy it is to set up!

Oh thanks :) that will be great! :) I'll definitely be getting one. I've just got to get madam dressed and she is a little glued to rugrats on Netflix at the moment....
i was just about the ask you where you were off to then. I'm such a numpty. Enjoy our southern hospitality :) I hope you have a nice time!!

Im interested at this too, I use to had polar watch but it died … and now Im searching for new toy.
Only thing that worries me is heat and water. As I work in kitchen I dont know will any of em deal with heat and water. Other hand if I cant wear it all the time its not worth of money and I should look watches again…
Dont even know

* I mean south EASTERN hospitality haha

they are waterproof by all accounts so should cope with steam. I read ONE review that said after swimming there may be some condensation behind the unit but all you do is pop it out, wipe it and pop it back in again.

Just looked at yesterdays paper and it is the Fitbit Flex at £79.99 that they are giving£15.99 off so £64.00. In Mail on Sunday. Hmmmm

Well I got one :) was quite chuffed that the smaller band was the better fit. It's currently on charge but I've set it up and it was super easy! Now I'll do as cave girl suggested and see what I do across the next couple of days :)

Is £64 good or is Argos cheaper? I'm still thinking but sounds like it is easy. I needs to be for me!

Argos was £10 off so £69.99 so who ever is doing it for £64 is cheaper :) I found it fairly simple. I can't comment if you don't have an iphone because you just down load the app and it walks you through it

I do have an iphone! However, it doesn't have a signal as it is my daughters old one which she left out in the rain and has no signal but it can and does have apps. Will that do the job? What about my laptop? Dunno.

I don't think it matters. It comes with a little clip and it means that you would pop it into your computer and download the info. The end result would be the same but in this age of instant gratification for many that's just not speedy enough :) what phone do you have? I could have a look online. It may be compatible? It's just that little bit harder for me to judge useability ;)
