Actifry or simular - worth it??

Hi all,

we still have a chance to buy a tefal actifry £100 off using code SW200 from the previous SW mag. So currently the family plus one 1.2kg is £104.99 with the code.

this is still a lot of money, so I was wondering if anyone here has one, what they think? Is it wor the cost? Hubby and I like chips lol. Can you omit the spoon of oil and use fry light or do you have to use the small amount of oil and syn it? What else can you do in them too?

Thanks xx

I use oil and syn it, or use it as say 1/2 heb. You only need one spoonful of oil (6 syns) - if you're doing a load of chips for 2 people it's only 3 syns each, so personally I think it's worth it. Have done them with frylight but they were a bit dry, so I prefer to use oil.

I think they are totally worth the money, I bought one when they first came out years ago and that is the same one I use now, I had to buy a replacement lid for it and when I was without it I completely felt lost, my SW chips from the oven were so horrible in comparison with the Actifry ones. You can also cook jacket spuds, sausages, curries.. the list is endless to be honest. I adore mine.

Thanks for the reply guys,

just 3 syns for a ton of chips does sound worth it :) didn't realise you could cook curries in them either. Knowing you can cook more than chips does help sway me towards buying one!

now to convince hubby they worth it.....wish me luck lol

Myself and my friends all invested in the Breville Halo health Fryer, pretty similar to the Actifry. I absolutely love the chips, cubes, Roasties and wedges from it. It can range from £69.99 to £79.99

I've had a Tefal Actifry for several years now and absolutely love it! I use frylight to make my chips in it so they're completely free, to be honest I can't notice enough difference to make the oil syns worthwhile!

Ooo thank u will have a look at the halo health fryer too. Good to know frylight maybe possible- it's just dependant on taste rather than how you MUST use the oil. Thanks for the replies guys. Hubby umming and ahhhing over getting one. Will work on him some more today! poor bloke haha

Out of interest what potatoes do u use. I have used Maris piper for SW chips before. I like SW chips but hubby not keen and I can never get them quite right

xx

The new infuse chilli/garlic frylight oil is good and is also syn free, there's a nice little kick to the chilli. I tend to use Maris Piper, nice and crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside :)

Thanks for the link :)
I have a Phillips Airfryer, no need to use oil, but I sometimes use frylight in it :)
It makes good chips, and i cook sausages in it too, you can use it for other things as well, which i may try from the recipe book that came with it at some point.
Thought about getting an Actifry myself...still considering!
I have been told by OH that I have too many kitchen gadgets!.....I think there is always room for another :D

Hehe,

always room for another kitchen gadget :) I have just had a new kitchen after we refurbed a very dated 1950's house which we moved to in June. One of the most important things was storage- for all my kitchen gadgets lol!

that new frylight with garlic and chilli sounds yummy, will have to try that thanks x

I've had both the tefal actifry and the phillips one. The tefal one broke after less than a year, I bought a replacement and that too failed less than a year old. The phillips is more reliable but I did prefer the tefal if only it was more reliable.

It's been a few years since I had a tefal so they may have improved it.

For the last 4 years I've had an Actifry but after replacing numerous parts and recently it not working too well on me I decided to look at an alternative brand to try.

I had a good read of reviews on different ones and decided to buy the Halo Plus.
I got a good offer of £89 from Very and I love it.

Its quieter than the Actifry, there's no paddle in the pan so it doesn't mash up your food.
You can grill or oven cook and then there's the tilt option so if you're making chips or wedges etc it tumbles them as it circulates.

I also like it as when you set the timer it beeps when time is up and actually switches off. It stays very warm for abit too if you want to dish up other foods first.

I highly recommend it. I've made loads in it too from meat, fish, jacket potatoes, roasties, chips, wedges, pizza, garlic bread and stews and casseroles. Seems much more used now.

The only downfall is the machine its self looks abit funny. Its white and green and looks like an helmet lol xxx

Hi guys, just thought I'd bump this post back up rather than start a new one.

Thinking of getting an airfryer as we're currently without an oven and don't know when we'll be able to have it fixed. I just wondered how often you all use yours and how useful they are once the initial novelty wears off? The halo one sounds like a good investment?

What are the main things you use them for?

Thanks :)
