Slimming World in Turkey..?

Hello! Just looking for a bit of advice really.

In September, I'm going to Marmaris for a weeks holiday, and would like to stay as SW friendly (food-wise) as possible! I will no doubt be indulging in lots of alcohol whilst on holiday, but would like to try and make the best choices possible when it comes to food. So, what type of things should I go for?

We are self catering if that helps. And our apartment will have a fridge. I am already thinking that I will pop down to the local supermarket when we arrive and stock up on plenty of fresh fruit for breakfasts. I eat fruit for my breakfast at home, so this won't be a problem.

With regards to lunch and dinner, what are the best kind of things to go for? Obviously I am thinking lots of salad and lean meats etc. But are there any turkish dishes which are known to be quite low in Syns? Anything else anyone can recommend?

I have about 10 weeks left before I go, so plenty of time. Just thought I'd start gathering ideas. Thanks in advance! :)

Hey! I'm off to turkey in October and im going self catering to. I've never been before but I'm gonna try to stick to pasta, salad and fruit.. Obv you can still have ya syns for your drinks :) enjoy your holiday x

cant really think of anything low syn when it comes to turkish dishes! they are usually full of oil. but in turkey they are brilliant with stuff, like everything comes with chips in marmaris but if you ask for without, its no bother! and salads too ask for dressings to come seperate and im sure they will oblige. i dont like dressings, so i always ask this.

jacket potatoes over there are lovely usually theyre laden with butter and cheese (lush by the way but not diet friendly lol) BUT again if you ask for it without, they are happy to do it. oh and their tuna never comes with mayo. they always bring that in a bottle seperate, so thats good too :)

also they do pasta dishes over there, and as well as steaks/chicken dishes coming laden with creamy sauces, you can also get them just plain chicken breast or plain fillet steak. ask for them with just the rice and vegetables and say you dont want chips and these will stay diet friendly.

in marmaris theyre big on bread, their crusty white bread is beautiful i cant help but indulge. and when you go out for a meal they always bring out a flat bread and an assortment of butters and turkish mezes! but again its no problem to ask not to have this.

there is a big shopping centre called point centre, upstairs there is food places and yeh there is a burger king and a pizza place but also a turkish place that gives you meat and salads and bread and drinks for pretty cheap!! that could be a good one for lunches? also there is a supermarket in there in the downstairs bit that you can get your fruit/veg/cereals from. why dont you take some mugshots in your suitcase too for quick snacks in the hotel?

so turkey can be done when healthy eating but to be honest the turkish food isnt that slimming world friendly in my opinion, or maybe ive just never looked before lol i go in 7 weeks, but to kusadasi. hope my all inc hotel is nice! what hotel are you going to if you dont mind me asking? i stayed in kibele last year, there was a supermarket called tansas near that that did great fruit and veg and stuff. but im not sure if its been taken down now

oh forgot to add!! if you go on boat trips/jeep safaris you get lunch included and these will deffo be slimmming world friendly! usually its chicken, salad, and pasta! they do give you bread but you dont have to eat it.

also if your hotel does a barbecue night, go to it!! chicken shish kebabs, kofte kebabs on sticks, chicken breast, salads and turkish meze dips they would be a good choice :)

Excellent, thank you!! I am staying at the Club Aida. I am really looking forward to it, this time in 7 weeks I will be on my way!! :)

Dear Princess Stevie,

I live in Turkey and you will be able to find loads of stuff that fits into slimming world for self catering...I agree some mugshots would be great to stick in your case, otherwise get some nice feta cheese (Ezine is the best one - or look in the supermarket for beyaz peynir - sutas or pinar are the brands I normally buy), eggs are plentyful and fruit and salad you will find loads - if you can find out what day the market is (they are usually every other day) then the fresh stuff is always better than the supermarkets. If you like olives they are great to snack on too - 7 olives for 1 syn if they are not stored in oil. You can also always find the rotisery chickens, pasta and tuna.

For eating out, real turkish food is actually pretty slimming world friendly, shish kebabs in lamb or beef done on the BBQ, fresh grilled fish, meatballs mostly served with rice/bulgur and salad, try to steer clear of the stuff with creamy sauces, tomato sauces are good but in turkey they do tend to use a lot of oil in sauces and mezes (although it is extra virgin olive oil...so you can always just count that as a HEB everyday.

Enjoy your holiday and just be sensible, if you choose wisely and enjoy yourself then you can be extra strict when you get back home.

have a great time

Wow, thank you Claire. That's a fantastic help!!

Think I am feeling prepared now and ready to go and make some sensible choices. Don't get me wrong I won't be saintly on holiday, but I won't be going crazy over the top either. If I fancy something I will have it - if you can't treat yourself whilst you're on holiday then when can you :)

24 more sleeps!! (Not that I'm counting or anything ;))

Hi boncuk, We go to Turkey a lot and yes the breads and desserts are lovely. I really like the milky type puds. Also my problem is that I dont like veg or salad at all so I am very limited when on holiday. I do love fruit though and love the cherries out in Turkey. Also the peaches are divine. I do go on holiday to enjoy and think, oh well I'm at target so will get it off when I come back no problem. By the way, really envy you living out there. Just love the country and have been to several areas. :)

Hi I also live in turkey :) when I am doing SW I usually have special k for brekkie , something like an omelette or salad for lunch and pasta/rice with veggies for dinner. Loads of tasty fruit at moment as well. The supermarkets all sell light varieties - cheese, triangles, mayo, yoghurt etc . It's easy to follow SW in turkey if you are self catering. Eating out is a bit trickier ... Turkish cooking requires lots of lovely olive oil but you can ask for your food to be low fat or fat free in many places. Young Turkish women are fierce about maintaining their trim figures , so a waiter would not be surprised if you ask for a healthy version . Mezes are usually made with oil , so be aware. And of course the bread here is awesome so watch put for too much of that !

Hi Slimming Lizard,

Good to see another person living in Turkey, where in Turkey are you?

I have put some turkish recipes that are SW adapted onto the recipes part of the forum, just in case you are interested :)

thats what i said to my consultant this week, im gonna be sensible make good choices where possible, but the crusty bread in turkey is too hard to resist!!

i go at 1oclock today, and im sat on here as if ive got nothing to do lol

Hello boncuk , we live in Altinkum , and thanks for the recipe ideas. I am currently following cal control but sure your recipes will fit that :)
And yes watch out for the Efes , agree with that although they do have Efes lite ... Is not too bad ;)

Hi Boncuk I also live near to Kusadasi and I find it quite easy here to chose healthy options. When I am back in Ireland I find it so restricting with the rubbish fruit and veg we have at mad prices. Trying to cal count at the minute and doing ok.
