Cous cous made into porridge

Hi all

I've been researching cous cous recipe's and found some nice ideas for a sweet cous cous porridge. Now I'm wondering is this ok on plan? Because that way I will save by HEB for later on - just worried as I guess it means I'll consume more calories as I would normally use my HEB for porridge oats.

I'd need to syn the small amount of milk (not enough to be a HEA) and if I put sugar in but I think apart from that it would be free.

Just checking it's not counted as "cheating" as I know there can be rules regarding using cous cous (well if you use it in a cake it is).

thanks

I'm unsure about the cous cous porridge, but you wouldn't need to syn the milk as you don't have to use your healthy extras in one go :)

I used to eat couscous and quinoa porridge all the time, it never affected my losses. I never counted it as cheating because I had it as part of a meal, to fill you up like you would do with a savoury version, I just added loads of fruit to it for super free like frozen berries, strawberries etc. I think if you were eating it between meals as a snack it might be different. I talked to my consultant and she said the way I was eating was fine, but if it affected my weight then re-think it x

Ah thanks for replying - just out of interest do you have a recipe and method for the porridge you made. It would just be nice on some days to have my HEB available for dinner - plus I'm getting bored of porridge made with yogurt so need to vary my breakfasts a bit.

Thanks

I just put 1 cup of couscous to 2 cups of milk in a pan, I add some cinnamon but that's down to personal taste and some sweetener and cook on a medium heat till it looks like a porridge. I used to batch cook this and just re-heated in the microwave in the morning. x

Yum I'm going to give that a go - I also found a recipe on a vegan website for quinoa breakfast porridge with strawberries for 2 portions:

1 cup quinoa
2 cups milk (any type including soya / almond)
1 tbsp brown sugar (I will prob just use sweetner)
1/4 tsp vanilla essence
dash cinnamon
1 cup diced strawberries

So you can either use the milk from you hea or syn it (I'm guessing the 1 cup per serving isn't many syns)

Combine quinoa and milk and cook over low heat for 10 mins, add sugar, cinammon and vanilla and heat for another 5 mins, then put in bowl with strawberries on top - I'm deffo trying both next week as a way of saving my b - although may be tempted to use my b to add seeds to this - yum!

I was vegan for a while and used to mix up couscous and quinoa together, just had to cook the quinoa on it's own for a bit as it takes longer to cook, then add the couscous.
One cup (american measurement) is 237mls, so if you use semi skimmed milk it would be near enough a full HEA. x

I have never has quinoa what is it?
Quinoa is a whole grain, it's a seed. It has quite an earthy taste to it, some people love it others don't. It's a really good source of protein and is gluten free x

Will have to try quinoa however have cous cous in at minute and just found this recipe for tomorrow

50g plain cous cous
100ml boiling water
Simmer on lowest heat until water absorbed
Take off heat and seperate with fork
Add muller and stir
Put back on low heat and stir till warm
Serve over chopped fruit x

Sorry for double post I thought it was lovely had mine with blueberries and strawberries so please still have hex a and b left wooop xx

This sounds amazing!

Can I ask. Are people using the small cous cous such as you get in packs like Ainsley Harriott or the large cous cous type?

I have the large cous cous and wondered if it would still taste porridgy.

I've only ever used the small couscous, it might work with the larger stuff you might have to cook it a little longer so it goes soft and get porridgy x

I will try and make some later as my post work out/lunch meal and let you know what it tastes like. X

Quick update - I made the quinoa porridge (recipe above) and it was amazing - in fact I'm having it for the 2nd day in a row. I used soya milk and 200ml is only 2 syns (it was the light one) and then I put on my heb of pecans (12 halves) and choppped strawberries - absolutely gorgeous. Will try with sweetner instead of sugar (to save syns) and might even try with water to make it syn free.
