Sadly I think your only chance is to go to a butcher and have a lean cut of meat minced, unless you have a mincer at home. Tesco's mince says 20% on the front but if you read the nutrition info it says 15.9g fat in 100g (aka 15.9% fat). However I thought that mince had to be less than 5% fat? Perhaps I've misunderstood?

I have a recipe for shepherds pie in a slimming world magazine that is syn free and has 16% minced lamb ??? thats why i asked. I guess its because its a fatty meat generally its impossible to get 5% fat like beef.

I have bought the 20% fat from waitrose and thanks for the tip i will see what it says on the package. I thought i would dry fry it and then remove as much surplus fat as poss before adding other ingredients i think that may help.

Ah, brilliant! I did wonder about lamb mince when I've looked for it doing my shopping - I've only been on SW for two weeks so far, although I did do it for about 8 months a few years ago, my memory doesn't go back that far . That's good news about 16% fat for lamb mince, I was thinking how you'd never find any really low lamb mince!
Let me know how it goes, and if it has an effect on your loss this week. Hope it doesn't! X

ok will do. I've just googled reducing fat from mince and they recommend dry frying and straining then rinsing with boiling water before adding other ingredients so will do this.

Good luck with your weight loss journey

I never buy lean minced beef or lamb. I just dry fry and rinse in boiling water or if I'm making kebabs or burgers I cook them on a rack so the fat can drain. It hasn't affected my losses xx

I'm with miataiblue, extra lean is soo expensive and hard to come by, so drain and rinse. No weight loss issues so far.

I would rather use it and syn it, or not bother having it at all. The idea of rinsing in boiling water horrifies me - there goes all the flavour!

But each to their own, of course.

I agree Anna, but if you put it back in the pan with a little water and add two stock cubes it helps.

I've found that by using turkey mince (cheap and lean by nature) and then adding a stock cube of the flavour I'm trying to 'mimic' it works really well! Made scotch eggs the other day and hubby couldn't tell the difference between pork sausage meat and turkey mince with a pork stock cube! Not sure this would work with all recipes but so far so good for me! x

I personally can't taste the difference if it's been rinsed, other than it not being greasy, as I add herbs/spices/stock cubes to what ever dish I'm making xx

But to me that is taking out all the natural flavour and replacing it with artificial flavour. Personally, I would rather not have the meat at all.

Yeah extra lean mince is difficult to find, more so since asda changed their packaging !! Just a note to add, mince doesn't become syn free by dry frying and draining the fat unfortunately, would be great if it did! So you'd have to syn it.
